This book was released on 1964 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to identity clothing purchasing habits of women 60 years of age and over. Data for this study were obtained from a questionnaire administered to 94 women, 60 years of age and over, living in Portland, Corvallis, and Eugene, Oregon. The sample was analyzed on the basis of two age groups (60 to 69 and 70 and over), three income groups (less than $999, $1000 to $1999, and $2000 and over), and three education groups (less than high school, high school, and more than high school). The chi square test was used to determine if there were relationships between clothing purchasing habits and the factors of age, income, and education of this age group. Age, income, and education were related to certain aspects of the purchasing habits of women 60 years of age and over. There was a significant relationship between the factors of age and income and whether the women enjoyed shopping for dresses. Age and education had significant relationships when analyzed with the frequency of looking at magazines, catalogues, newspapers, pattern books, or displays. There was a significant relationship between income and education and the frequency of buying a dress after first seeing it pictured in a a catalogue, a newspaper, or a window display. Age and income were important factors in whether the women wished stores carried a wider selection from which to choose. Older women have an interest in clothing. Comfort and fit were found to be the most important factors to consider in the selection of a dress. The majority of the women shopped for dresses in department stores which were located in their home towns. Most of the women shopped by themselves and preferred to do so. The majority of the women wanted their dresses to be of the current fashion trends, and many of the women were able to find styles that they liked to wear.

Book The Relationship of Clothing Attitudes of Three Groups of Women to Age and Level of Husband s Position

Download or read book The Relationship of Clothing Attitudes of Three Groups of Women to Age and Level of Husband s Position written by Martha Goetz Waldemar and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this problem was to compare young, middle-aged, and older women's attitudes concerning clothing, and to see what influence the husband's position and income had on the clothing attitudes of the wife. The problem dealt with five specific aspects of women's dress: (1) appropriate dress, (2) impressing others, (3) fashion interest, (4) confidence in selection of clothing, and (5) effect wife's role had on her wardrobe. The data for this study was obtained through the use of a questionnaire in a structured interview. The 75 subjects were wives of college graduates that were working in or toward a management position within a large manufacturing company in Portland, Oregon. Eleven companies manufacturing industrial equipment participated in the study. The questionnaire was composed of 21 questions used in previous research and 21 questions written for this study. The chi-square test was used to determine the relationship between age and income and attitudes toward clothing. The wife's education was also tested to see if it was an influencing factor on the above attitudes. Analysis of the data showed that significantly more younger women were concerned about what to wear than the other age groups, and that they knew the least about the designers. More of them also had less confidence in selecting a garment to wear. More of the middle-aged women knew the most about fashion designers, and had confidence in the selection of a garment. There were more significant differences between the levels of husband's position than in either wife's age or wife's education. Analysis showed subjects in the lowest income group had high interest in prestige items and wore the same outfit fewer times. More of them had less interest in reading fashion magazines, knew less about fashion designers, and had less confidence in selecting a garment than the other two income groups. Significantly more of the high income group owned prestige items, wore the same outfit many times, had a strong desire for exclusiveness, had a high interest in reading fashion magazines, and recognized more of the fashion designers names than the other two income groups. More of the women with the high school education wore the same outfit the most times, and knew less about fashion designers. They had less confidence in their selection of a garment. More of the women with the vocational or business school training had the highest confidence in the selection of a garment. The women with a college degree knew more about fashion designers. There were more women who pursued a role of home orientation and fewer were socially-oriented. More of the home and socially-oriented wives were highest in the types of activities participated in and their reasons for participation. More of the home-oriented wives were rated low in their reasons for participation. More of the socially-active women were influenced in their clothing selection by outside sources.

Book Clothing Behavior Related to Certain Personality Traits of a Selected Group of Japanese and American Men and Women

Download or read book Clothing Behavior Related to Certain Personality Traits of a Selected Group of Japanese and American Men and Women written by Diane Maeda Sugimura and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study was undertaken for the purpose of investigating the relationship between clothing behavior and sex, Japanese and American cultures, feminine or masculine personality types, and sex-role concepts. The aspects of clothing behavior included in the study are interest, tolerance, acceptance, and innovation of uni-sex clothing items, and the femininity-masculinity ratings of uni-sex clothing items. The instrument developed for the study consisted of four parts: 1) background information, Fe (femininity) scale of personality, and a measure of sex-role concept which determined the subjects' degree of restrictiveness on occupations which women should never have, 2) a measure of tolerance, acceptance, and innovation (T-A-I) of uni-sex clothing items, (3) interest in uni-sex clothing items, and 4) an F-M rating scale for each of the 15 uni-sex items. The participants were from the total Japanese student population and a random selection of American students registered for the 1970 summer term at Oregon State University and the University of Oregon. Also included were members of the Japanese-American Study Program at Oregon State. The total sample included 78 subjects, 46 of them male and 32 female. Japanese and Americans numbered 32 and 46, respectively. Statistical analyses of the data included a two-tailed t-tests as a measure of difference between the means of two variables and simple correlations (r) between variables. The study found that the men and women did differ in their clothing behavior--in interest in, and tolerance, acceptance, and innovation of uni-sex clothing items, and in the F-M ratings of the items which they accepted. Women showed greater interest and T-A-I, and rated the items more feminine than did the men. A comparison between. Japanese and Americans found no significant differences in any of the aspects of clothing behavior studied. Femininity- masculinity of personality showed a relationship with the individuals' F-M ratings of the uni-sex items which they accepted, with the more feminine personality rating the accepted items more feminine. Those differing in sex-role concept were found to differ in interest in, and T-A-I of uni-sex clothing items. Greater interest and T-A-I were indicated by those with the less restrictive sex-role concepts. The F-M ratings of items accepted did not differ among those with differing sex-role concepts.
