Book excerpt: The current study investigated the relationship between athletic identity and Big-Five personality traits within collegiate athletes. This study also assessed the differences between collegiate athletes and non-collegiate athletes on the Big-Five personality traits. Division I team sport athletes from James Madison University were surveyed along with non-collegiate athletes from the same university. Collegiate athletes differed from non-athletes on the traits of Neuroticism, Extraversion, and Openness and in their levels of athletic identity. In addition, a significant relationship was found between athletic identity and the traits of Neuroticism, Openness, and Extraversion, which differed for male and female athletes. Implications for future research and coaches regarding their athletes is discussed.

Book excerpt: "Intercollegiate athletes balance many roles during a vital time of their identity development. Research regarding collegiate level athletic identity has grown in the past thirty years. More specifically, the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (AIMS; Brewer, Van Raalte, and Linder, 1993) was developed to assess the psychological benefits and risks associated with athletic identity. Much of the previous literature has examined these benefits and risks in Division I student-athletes. The goal of this study was to explore the relationship between athletic identity and well-being in Division III student-athletes, a generally understudied population. An additional aim of the study was to determine if participation in non-athletic activities (campus involvement) positively impacted well-being in Division III student-athletes. The results indicated a significant relationship between athletic identity and well-being. Furthermore, the interaction of campus involvement, athletic identity, and well-being was determined to not be significant. Clinical implications, limitations and strengths to the study, and future directions are discussed. Book excerpt: Although the importance of context has been emphasized by temperament researchers, until now there has been remarkably little systematic research on the unique role specific aspects of context play in the development and impact of temperament. The goal of this volume is to systematize current knowledge and theory on the role played by specific aspects of context in the etiology, expression, and influence of temperament, particularly for those aspects of temperament that are most likely to relate to later personality traits. Reflecting the editors' view that the interface between temperament and context is a bidirectional phenomenon, this volume focuses on two broad issues: 1) How does context moderate the expression, continuity, or consequences of individual differences in introversion-extraversion, sociability, emotionality, and inhibition (the I-ESEI family of traits)? 2) How do individual differences in the I-ESEI family of traits moderate the nature of characteristics of the individual's context? Book excerpt: There has been limited research that focuses on Division III college student athletes and the career development process. Although previous researchers have studied the relationship between athletic identity and career decision making self-efficacy (CDMSE) among college student athletes, results have been inconsistent, with different researchers finding inverse, positive, or no relationships between variables. In addition, numerous researchers have examined career development among college student athletes. However, there has been no research to date that studies professional development engagement (PDE) and college student athletes. In addition, the majority of career development studies involving college student athletes have focused on either Division I or II schools. To address this gap, the current research project utilized three variables (athletic identity, CDMSE, and PDE) to try to gain an understanding of factors that may impact the career development process for traditional age college students (College Student Non-Athletes; CSNA) and college student-athletes in a Division III school. Chickering’s Identity Development Theory was used as a lens to examine identity development among the populations of interest. The researcher conducted a quantitative study at an NCAA Division III university in the northeastern region of the United States to examine the relationship between PDE and CDMSE among college student athletes (research question 1). Furthermore, this research was designed to determine if the association between PDE and CDMSE changed when controlling for athletic identity (research question 2). Lastly, the author examined this same set of variables and controls (the association between PDE and CDMSE when controlling for athletic identity) to see if there was a significant difference between college student athletes vs. CNSAs (research question 3). NCAA Division III student athletes and CSNA completed an online survey consisting of three instruments (Athletic Identity Measurement Scale, Career Decision Making Short-Form, and Professional Development Engagement Scale) and a demographic questionnaire. The results suggest that higher levels of PDE lead to higher level of CDMSE, and that higher levels of athletic identity were related to higher levels of CDMSE when controlling for PDE. Furthermore, in both the student athlete and the CNSA samples, there was no significant relationship difference in the association between PDE and CDMSE when accounting for athletic identity. Additionally, implications for research, practice, and teaching are discussed.

Book excerpt: The National College Athlete Association (NCAA) reports ever-increasing numbers of students participating in collegiate sports. As the demand for and intensity of collegiate sports continue to grow, there is a need to understand the sport enviornment and assist in the development of environments conducive to the well-being of student-athletes. This study used the vocational and industrial-organizational theory of person-environment fit to concptualize the collegiate sport environment as it shares numerous characteristics with a work environment. This study examined the relationships between the perceived cohesion student-athletes experience with their coaches and teammates and their motivation to perform. The impact of three moderators (athletic identity, sex, and sport type) on the cohesion - motivation relationship was also examined. Using data collected from 219 male and female collegiate student-athletes, hierarchical multiple regressions tested the effects of the perceived coach-athlete relationship and team-athlete relationship on predicting athletes' motivation to perform as well as the moderating effects of athletic identity, sex, and sport type. The athletes' perceived coach-athlete cohesion, team-athlete cohesion, and athletic identity (i.e., the degree to which an individual identifies with the athlete role) predicted the intrinsic and self-determined motivation levels of student-athletes. Athletic identity moderated the relationship between perceived team-athlete cohesion and motivation; sport type moderated the relationship between perceived coach-athlete cohesion and motivation. For student-athletes who reported a low athletic identity, perceived cohesion with their team was more predictive of their motivation levels than it was for those who had higher athletic identity. The degree to which they perceived cohesion with coach was more strongly predictive of self-determined motivation levels for student-athletes of individual sports compared to student-athletes involved in team sports. Clinical implications of the findings and future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: Injuries are to be expected when participating in all levels of collegiate sports (e.g., recreation, elite, club, intermural). It is common among collegiate athletes to continue practicing or competing despite being in pain/injured. This willingness to play hurt can cause negative consequences for athlete’s future health. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of biological sex, athletic identity and pressure on collegiate athlete’s attitudes and behaviors toward playing through pain and injury. Student-athletes involved in NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Division II sports completed two questionnaires and one measurement scale: demographic questionnaire, Risk, Pain and Injury Questionnaire and the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale. The results of this study indicated that student-athletes’ perceived pressure from coaches, but not biological sex or athletic identity had a significant influence on collegiate athlete’s attitudes and behaviors toward playing through pain and injury. Future research should also continue to examine the influence of gender on playing through pain and injury, as there is still conflicting evidence; as seen with our studies’ results. By analyzing the ‘why’ to an athlete accepting the cost of playing through pain and injury improvements to the life of future student-athletes may be made.

Book excerpt: Many student-athletes will find themselves questioning if they are more of a student or an athlete at some point in their academic career. Previous research has looked at gender roles, race and masculinity when developing male student-athlete identity, however this paper explores what other factors might influence football student-athletes to privilege one identity over another? According to Stryker's Identity Theory, the creation of roles comes from interaction with external forces and is linked to social positions within the social structure. This study explores the individual factors that influence the student and the athlete identity, and how that individual negotiates between these identities. To answer this question, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 17 male student-athletes that met the following criteria: have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, expected to graduate in five years or less, and a member of the football team. I found for the 'student' identity, the five dominant social structures that influenced the participants' student identity were Family, Eligibility, Academic recognition, Medical and Freshman Redshirting, and the Institution. While Family, Faculty Support, the Recruiting Process, God, Media, Injuries, Teammates, and a Student of the Game were the eight dominant social structures that affected the athletic identity. There were seven dominant tensions that the student-athletes spoke, and there were three dominate ways these student-athletes navigated through those conflicts. Through Stryker's Identity Theory I found these social structures were framing these student-athletes as only athletes using both role expectations and interaction with others in the structure. As a result, these student-athletes were handing these conflicts based off their salient identity--their athlete identity. I found that as long as the social structures are pointing toward their athletic identity these student-athletes did not have any conflict. When the social structure does not point to their athlete identity was when conflict happened. It is at that time that the participants' identity salience begins to shift, which started happening for a few of the participants that realized their athletic career was ending. When their identity begins to change so does their role expectations and how others interact with them.
