Because earlier interventions result in better outcomes, the search for effective therapies for at-risk adolescents has intensified. There is anecdotal evidence that equine-assisted mental health therapy programs improve coping and build skills in adolescent girls with mental health problems. The value of working with horses in a therapeutic modality is presumed to be based on the adolescent girl-horse relationship, yet the nature of this relationship has not been described or explained. The purpose of this research was to describe the essence of the relationship between adolescent girls and horses in order to obtain a greater understanding of the potential benefits of equine-assisted therapies for adolescent girls. An interpretive qualitative approach, based on Heideggerian philosophy, was used to examine the nature of the relationship from the perspective of the adolescent girls. To provide a broad understanding of the relationship, two groups of adolescent girls were purposefully sampled (N = 19). One group consisted of girls who had a variety of behavioral and emotional problems and were participating in an equine assisted therapy program (n = 9). The second group included girls from local riding stables who were naturally attracted to horses and rode for pleasure (n = 10). Using open-ended questions, the girls were asked to describe their relationships with horses. The interviews were audio taped and transcribed. The data were analyzed in a disciplined and systematic manner according to procedures outlined by Diekelmann and Allen (1989). The themes identified were sharing physical affection, being there for each other, being connected, dealing with stress, being good at something, and being a better person. The findings illustrate that adolescent girls derive important benefits from their relationships with horses. The experiences of girls with their horses during equine-assisted therapy can provide a context and focus for psychotherapy and counseling, suggesting that the two types of therapy should be integrated. This study offers promising information into understanding the relationship between adolescent girls and horses and a foundation for future research in this area.

Jean O’Malley Halley, a self-professed “horse girl,” contends that this relationship and its cultural signifiers influence the manner in which young girls define their identity when it comes to gender. Halley examines how popular culture, including the “pony book” genre, uses horses to encourage conformity to gender norms but also insists that the loving relationship between a girl and a horse fundamentally challenges sexist and mainstream ideas of girlhood. Horse Crazy looks at the relationships between girls and horses through the frameworks of Michel Foucault’s concepts of normalization and biopower, drawing conclusions about the way girls’ agency is both normalized and resistant to normalization. Segments of Halley’s own experiences with horses as a young girl, as well as experiences from the perspective of other girls, are sources for examination. “Horsey girls,” as she calls them, are girls who find a way to defy the expectations given to them by society—thinness, obsession with makeup and beauty, frailty—and gain the possibility of freedom in the process. Drawing on Nicole Shukin’s uses of animal capital theories, Halley also explores the varied treatment of horses themselves as an example of the biopolitical use of nonhuman animals and the manipulation and exploitation of horse life. In so doing she engages with common ways we think and feel about animals and with the technologies of speciesism.

Taking up topics such as adolescent pregnancy and parenthood, queer sexualities, animal-human connections and sexual abuse, Kokkola provides wide-ranging insights into how Anglophone literature responds to adolescents’ carnal desires, and contributes to on-going debates on the construction of adolescence and the ideology of innocence.

It is based on a six-year study by The Literacy and Community Initiative (LCI) at North Carolina State University. This book examines the potential, possibilities, and challenges of using critical literacy in university-community partnerships to amplify youth voices. Through the LCI program, youth in four community-based organizations completed a critical literacy curriculum, published their writings in a book, and participated in public readings to engage and lead their communities. The authors draw on data from semi-structured individual interviews, focus groups, youth narratives, and socio-emotional surveys across four unique youth populations. The youth populations involved collaborations with youth of color in urban communities, Latine immigrant and second-generation youth, girls in foster care and high-risk situations, and youth from immigrant and refugee backgrounds. Results of the study suggest that after engaging in the LCI critical literacy program, youth demonstrated improved literacy skills, enhanced social-emotional well-being, and increased community leadership and self-advocacy. Presenting a novel theoretical framework for the effective use of critical literacy to promote positive youth development in conjunction with first-hand insights into the successful development and sustainment of university-community research partnerships, this book ultimately provides a unique insight into how critical literacy and successful university-community partnerships can combine to result in powerful support for underserved culturally and linguistically diverse youth. This book will appeal to scholars, educators, and practitioners with interests in critical literacy, positive youth development studies, and adolescent research.
