Book excerpt: A significant amount of research has been conducted concerning the relevence of homework in a student's academic life. However, previous literature has not exte nsifly adressed the relationship between parental attitudes towards homework and child academic achievement. This study aims to investigated the relationship be tween parental attitudes towards homework and students' academic achievement (En glish, math, and science) in the upper elementary level. Two hundred twenty two parents of upper elementary students from St. Joseph's School, Cornet Chahwan, in Lebanon took part in this study responding to the survey about their attitude s towards homework. Results show that there is a positive significant relations hip between parental attitude towards homework and children's academic achieveme nt in English, math, and science.

According to empirical evidence, one of the most important success factors in implementing inclusive schooling are the attitudes of the actors involved. Previous studies have shown that positive attitudes towards inclusive schooling are not only a condition for success regarding the implementation, but also an important outcome variable of inclusive education. The present study provides empirical insights into the attitudes towards students with learning disabilities and behavioral disorders. A study called ATIS-STEP (Attitudes Towards Inclusive Schooling - Students', TEachers' and Parents' Attitudes) was conducted in the school year 2016/17 in 48 inclusive classrooms in Austria. It is the first study to provide longitudinal data that examines the attitudes of the three different stakeholder groups: students, teachers and parents. Furthermore, the interdependency of the attitudes of the three groups, as well as the influence of previous contact experience on the attitudes are analyzed and discussed. Book excerpt: Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to explore the relation between selected Socio-economic and parenting factors on the academic performance of pupils. The study used a descriptive research designed type. A total of twenty-nine (29) pupils who are in Basic two were used for the study. Questionnaires and test were the instruments used in gathering data on pupils and their parents. Responses from the pupils and their parents were treated statistically using frequency tables, percentages, mean, standard deviation and Pearson’s Correlation as the tools. Major findings from the study indicated that pupils’ academic performance is just above average; and that the Socio-economic and parenting factors of the parents of the pupils’ are also average. The study further established that there is a significant, medium and positive relation existing between the Socio-economic status of pupils’ parents and pupils’ academic performance; the parenting attitudes and pupils’ academic performance. Finally, the study again established that there is a significant, medium relation between the Socio-economic status of pupils’ parents and their parenting attitude or responsible parenting. Based the findings, suggestions in the form of recommendations were offered, which included; the need for deepened teacher – parent collaboration and the school undertaking activities to attract parents to the school.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to research elementary school parents to gain a better understanding of their beliefs and attitudes about their children's academic learning. The research was conducted in a small community in the Midwest. The project took place in the fall of 2005, at the elementary school, in a district that educates approximately 700 students Pre-K - 12. One hundred and fifty families had children attending the elementary school. All parents who attended parent-teacher conferences, both mothers and fathers, were asked to complete the survey. The attendance rate at parent-teacher conferences was eighty-five percent. Data were collected through a survey created by the researcher, which included five research questions. With more research on the reasons behind the barriers to parents' involvement, parents and teachers can work together to analyze areas for improvement. Therefore, it was important to know parents' attitudes and beliefs about their role in their children's academic achievement. The overall goal was to provide a framework for the school to build on their parent involvement program, both at home and at school, which in turn would help increase student achievement. Results of the study indicated that there were no external barriers that prevented parents from participating in their children's education. The main limiting factors related to parents' work schedules and hectic lifestyles. Overall, it was found that most parents strongly valued involvement in their child's learning. However, when females were compared to males, there were several items that indicated a significant difference between the two when analyzing their involvement at home and at school. Prior school experiences for parents had no bearing on their level of involvement in their child's education, and their level of involvement did not change based on the number of children in the home.
