Book excerpt: Emotional intelligence, which involves competencies that can help leaders deal more effectively with organizational members and foster a healthy organizational climate, has become increasingly more popular and debated in recent years. The purpose of this quantitative, correlational study was to determine whether a relationship existed between a leader's self-perceived level of emotional intelligence and the overall organizational climate, as perceived by organizational members in a nonprofit setting. The research question focused on whether a leader's level of emotional intelligence correlated with a healthy organizational climate. The Emotional Intelligence Quotient Inventory (EQ-I) was administered to 29 leaders from various nonprofit organizations from the United States and the Palestinian territories. The Organizational Climate Questionnaire (OCQ) was administered to 96 organizational members to determine organizational climate. Data obtained from the aforementioned instruments were analyzed using Pearson correlations and multiple regressions. The study revealed no significant relationship between the emotional intelligence of leaders and organizational climate as perceived by organizational members. The results of the study indicate that individuals working in nonprofit organizations are perhaps influenced and/or motivated differently than individuals working in for-profit organizations.

Book excerpt: Affect and Emotion includes a variety of chapters by some of the most prominent scholars in the area of emotions and leadership, as well as chapters by rising stars. These chapters chart the direction of future research in affect and leadership in four main areas. First, several of these chapters make a convincing argument that leaders use emotional labor and other forms of emotional displays to influence followers and team members. Leaders may use emotional labor to manage relational identities, or to create favorable impressions on followers and to create trust. Leaders' active emotional displays increase vision related performance and perception of transformational leadership. Second, one chapter reveals how emotions play an important role in leadership at every level, from within-person to organization-wide leadership. Leader's emotional labor plays an important role in several of these levels, with the exact method of performing emotional labor varying by level. A second chapter also examines levels of leadership, with a particular examination of the effects of leader emotional labor on close and distant leadership. Third, several of the chapters examine emotions from the authentic leadership and positive leadership perspectives, and two of these chapters focus on how psychological capital and authentic leadership skills help leaders be resilient and overcome obstacles. Fourth, two of the chapters show the role of affect and friendship ties to leadership research. One of these chapters examines the need to develop psychometrically sound measures of affect and friendship, whereas the other develops a model of how affect influences social network ties and informal leadership emergence. Taken together, these chapters illustrate four important research trends in emotions and leadership that are likely to grow in importance in the coming years.

A manager who can cope with their emotions indirectly contributes to organizational effectiveness. This situation is especially important in human-oriented organizations providing services rather than goods, such as educational institutions. Leadership is a process of social influence, which maximizes the efforts of others towards the achievement of a goal. Leadership stems from social influence rather than authority or power. In terms of system approach, the input, output, process, and feedback of educational organizations are always related to human behaviors. Therefore, organizations must address the nature of human beings in all of their managerial processes. Although organizations, in which people are at the foreground, try to continue their functioning on a rational and formal basis throughout the managerial process, they sometimes have to manage emotional and informal phenomena. In this case, there is a need for managers and school leaders who can shape the rationale in line with the requirements of human nature. What is expected from this administrator is that they do not ignore human needs and emotions while providing the management of educational institutions. For this reason, these managers should be "leaders" rather than "executives" who only work in a formal framework of organization management. Moreover, principals and teachers should also be leaders in all educational processes. Emotions are the main catalyst of positive organizational culture. Leaders can create an effective organizational culture with the main source of positive emotions between employers. Positive emotions also motivate employees for organizational purposes. If a leader wishes to create and maintain an effective organizational culture, it is essential to support positive behavior and emotional climate in their institutes and schools. Leaders-school-managers and teachers, therefore, need to develop emotion management abilities. Educational organizations need to shape their organizational culture, climate, and psychology to support their leaders in efficiently managing their employees’ emotions. Up to now, this topic has been usually addressed as the main catalyst and a sub-dimension of emotional intelligence. Moreover, current evidence classifies social and empathy skills as other sub-dimensions of emotional intelligence. For this reason, this collection of peer-reviewed articles will draw attention to the contemporary term "emotional management" and contribute to educational fields by means of exploring the relationship between emotions and leadership.

Book excerpt: In recent years, the construct of emotional intelligence has gained much attention as a potential underlying attribute of effective leadership. Still, there are many viewpoints regarding the relationship (if any) between emotional intelligence and leadership effectiveness. The purpose of this doctoral study was to investigate the said relationship and explore further whether or not emotional intelligence dimensions, self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management, could predict the perceived level of leadership effectiveness. Quantitative survey data was obtained between 2013 and 2014 from 91 senior managers and over 1,000 employees in a large investor-owned utility company in the United States. The findings suggested that leaders' emotional intelligence, as measured by the self-assessed Emotional Intelligence Appraisal (EIA) questionnaires, has no significant relationship with the perceived level of leadership effectiveness, as measured by the 360-degree Leadership Assessment Program (LAP) surveys. The research also showed that four emotional intelligence dimensions, as predictors, are not conclusive indicators of leadership effectiveness ratings, the desired leadership outcome.

The first part of this work briefly discusses different aspects of leaders’ cognisance on leadership in general and their own leadership abilities. Afterwards the author considers three motivations that most directly influence a leader’s behaviour, discussing the goals behind them, the resulting behaviour and its influence on the leadership style. The final part of this work starts with brief explanations of Emotional Intelligence in leadership and some of the more common models of the leadership process. From these, a model of Integrated Emotional Intelligence (IEI) in the leadership process is developed. Considering the elements of this model, the effects of Emotional Intelligence on leader behaviour and leader communication are explained. The cognisance of leaders on leadership is much influenced by their perception on their own leadership abilities and their motivations. These, however, may turn out to be quite complex and lacking the consideration of the followers’ abilities and motivations. Emotional Intelligence in leadership is one concept to enhance leaders’ cognisance in this respect.

A sample of 138 managers from 66 organizations reported on their own emotional intelligence and the creativity of their teams. Our results point out two main findings: (a) leaders' emotional intelligence explains significant variance of both creativity dimensions; (b) emotional intelligence dimensions with higher predictive power are self-control against criticism and empathy. The findings suggest that emotionally intelligent leaders behave in ways that stimulate the creativity of their teams.
