Book The Relationship Between Career Decision Making Self Efficacy and Perceived Career Barriers in the Career Decision Making of Selected Community College Students

Download or read book The Relationship Between Career Decision Making Self Efficacy and Perceived Career Barriers in the Career Decision Making of Selected Community College Students written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explored the differences between career decision-making self-efficacy (CDMSE) and perceived career barriers of students enrolled in the applied technology program compared to those enrolled in a college transfer program at a southeastern urban community college. Participants in the ex-post facto cross-sectional survey included 787 full and part-time students at the community college. There were three research questions: (1) Are there differences in mean scores of CDMSE and perceived career barriers of applied technology and college transfer community college students pursuing associate degree, diploma or certificate programs by demographic characteristics (gender, ethnicity, age, first-generational, employment, full and part-time student status)? (2) What is the predictive value of these demographic variables on CDMSE and perceived career barriers of applied technology and college transfer community college students pursuing associate degree, diploma or certificate programs? (3) Is there a relationship between CDMSE and perceived career barriers of applied technology and college transfer community college students pursuing associate degree, diploma or certificate programs? The Career Decision Self-Efficacy-Short Form and Career Barriers Inventory-Revised were administered to participants and data were analyzed using two sample t-tests, ANOVA and multiple regression models. There were significant differences between applied technology and college transfer students in terms of perception of career barriers and career decision-making self-efficacy. The applied technology students, who tended to be older, had higher career decision-making self-efficacy scores than the college transfer students and that did not change across the other demographic variables (gender, etc). The college transfer students, who tended to be younger, had higher perception of career barriers scores, and this did not change across demographic variables. Future research using a qualitat.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Second, the results of the study indicated that students without a disability had higher levels of career maturity and self-advocacy than students with a disability; however, the self-efficacy scores were similar for students with and without a disability. Third, the results of the study focusing specifically on students with disabilities indicated that the career maturity of students who had a high level of self-advocacy was higher than for the students who had a low level of self-advocacy. However, there was no difference in levels of self-advocacy and career decision self-efficacy of college students with disabilities. Fourth, the results of this study focusing specifically on students with disabilities indicated that self-advocacy and career decision self-efficacy were the only variables that positively affected career maturity. Implications and directions for future research are discussed.

Book Perceived Self efficacy Supports and Barriers of School Counselors Addressing Career Development Needs of Students with Intellectual Disability

Download or read book Perceived Self efficacy Supports and Barriers of School Counselors Addressing Career Development Needs of Students with Intellectual Disability written by Arden Alexandra Szepe and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Individuals with intellectual disability (ID) typically experience lower rates of employment compared to their peers without disabilities; 21% of working age adults with ID are employed (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2018). School counselors are in a unique position to assist in career/postsecondary exploration and can help to obtain early work experiences during high school. However, prior research has found that school counselors may feel inadequately prepared to meet the career development needs of all students and are hesitant to participate in career and college readiness tasks with individuals with disabilities due to being unfamiliar. Therefore, this quantitative study focused on perceived self-efficacy, supports, and barriers of school counselors addressing career development needs of students with ID. This study addressed three main research questions: What are psychometric properties of the Career and College Development-Students with Intellectual Disability survey? What is the perceived self-efficacy of school counselors to provide career development to students with ID? and What are perceived barriers or supports that impact school counselors working with students with ID? Participants in this study were high school counselors who currently serve students with ID and have at least one-year experience. Results concluded that career counseling self-efficacy is significantly correlated with self-efficacy of school counselors providing career development to students with ID. Additionally, variables such as training and years in career predicted higher levels of self-efficacy related to career development with students with ID. Barriers and supports were identified, such as training, counselor time, knowledge, and collaboration that impact school counselor incorporation of career and college readiness programming into their school counseling program. Further research into understanding the impact of school counselor self-efficacy should focus on postsecondary outcomes of students with ID, with the intention that all students have the opportunity to engage in career exploration. Based on these findings, implications for future research, school counselors, and counselor educators are provided.

Book The Relationships Between the Sense of Coherence Demographic Characteristics and Career Thought Processes Among College Students with Disabilities

Download or read book The Relationships Between the Sense of Coherence Demographic Characteristics and Career Thought Processes Among College Students with Disabilities written by Wonsun Seo and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the relationship between sense of coherence, demographic characteristics, and career thought processes among college students with disabilities based on Antonovsky's conceptual framework of sense of coherence. Participants were college students with disabilities collected through the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities (rcpd) at Michigan State University and other universities and colleges via a listserv of the Michigan Association on Higher Education and Disabilities (mi-ahead). Pearson Correlation Coefficient and forward stepwise regression analyses were carried out in order to find out the relationship between sense of coherence, demographic characteristics (E.G., gender, race, and socioeconomic status), and career thought processes. Results supported that college students with disabilities who showed higher sense of coherence indicated less overall dysfunctional career thoughts, career decision-making confusion, or career-related anxiety. In addition, the relationships between sense of coherence, career thoughts, and the demographic characteristics have been found. Implications for career development professionals as well as clinical considerations of caring for college students with disabilities experiencing career-related difficulties were discussed. Book Self efficacy and the Career Development of Adolescents with Learning Disabilities

Download or read book Self efficacy and the Career Development of Adolescents with Learning Disabilities written by Rebecca J. Huffman Panagos and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Follow-up studies continue to document a low rate of successful transition for adolescents with learning disabilities. Current career counseling programs may, therefore, be ineffective for adolescents with learning disabilities. Self-efficacy beliefs, an individual's perceived performance capabilities, have been found to be an important explanatory construct in the development of career interest independent of abilities and aptitudes. The majority of career self-efficacy research thus far has been conducted with samples of older college students and adults. Furthermore, investigations have not focused specifically on persons with disabilities. The current study assessed aptitudes, interests, self-efficacy beliefs, sources of efficacy information, and outcome expectations pertaining to relevant careers among a sample of 96 secondary students with learning disabilities. Person input variables other than aptitude (i.e., gender, race, grade, socioeconomic status, and IQ level) also were included in the study design. Zero order correlations and hierarchical multiple regressions were utilized to investigate hypothesized relationships. Findings indicated that self-efficacy beliefs were a consistent and substantial predictor of interest in corresponding career areas. Ratings of hypothesized sources of efficacy information, in turn, were found be significant predictors of self-efficacy beliefs in corresponding career areas, with the exception of emotional arousal as a source of information. Ratings of sources of efficacy information also were related to career interest scores. However, as hypothesized, findings indicated that ratings of self-efficacy beliefs mediated these associations. Person input variables, most notably measures of aptitude, were not found to be related to career self-efficacy beliefs or interests in corresponding career areas. Ratings of outcome expectations belonging to the self-evaluative class (i.e., sense of accomplishment, security, and prestige) exhibited a significant positive relationship with interest scores for corresponding career areas. The findings of the present study suggest that earlier results focusing on the career development of adult populations without disabilities may now be reconsidered for generalization to adolescents with learning disabilities. The importance of considering the influence of subjective factors (i.e., interests and self-efficacy beliefs) rather than only objective skills (i.e., aptitudes and abilities) on the career development of adolescents with learning disabilities is suggested through interventions and strategies.

Book A Phenomenological Study of the Career Development Experiences of Participants of the Careers Collaborative Program at Michigan State University

Download or read book A Phenomenological Study of the Career Development Experiences of Participants of the Careers Collaborative Program at Michigan State University written by Rosemarie Van Ham and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to understand the career development experiences of students with disabilities who participated in a unique collaborative program consisting of three university entities: Disabilities Services, Career Services, and the College of Education, as well as community-based service agency, the state vocational rehabilitation agency in the State of Michigan. Guided by the Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) and through semi-structured interviews with 12 participants, half alumni and half current students, this researcher collected information about how the Careers Collaborative services had assisted with the participants' career preparation and development, particularly in terms of their interaction with professional staff, how their personal and learning experiences impacted decisions related to their field of study, what role disability had in their decisions, and the supports and barriers perceived by the participants. For each of the six SCCT constructs, themes emerged that were described as follows. Construct 1 Self-Efficacy and themes: Soft Skills Attainment, Positive Outlook on Future Employment, Barriers and Supports, Educational and Professional Past Experiences. Construct 2 Learning Experiences and themes: Previous Academic Experiences, Work Experiences and Exploration, Personal Experiences, Impact of Others. Construct 3 Person Inputs and themes: Personality Characteristics, Effects of Disability, Educational Factors Influencing Career Path, Accommodations and Support Services in Higher Education. Construct 4 Outcome Expectations and themes: Participant's Employment Outlook, Future Plans are Guided by Expectations, Personal Fit of Job, Preparing for Potential Challenges. Construct 5 Interests and themes: Past Experiences, Personal Values, Passion, Autonomy. Construct 6 Personal/Choice Goals and themes: Continued Education or Training, Gain Experience, Active Engagement with Partners in the Careers Collaborative, Value-Driven Decision. The results of this study showed promising and positive outcomes of participants who received a program that supported and provided both academic and career-related services for college students with disabilities. It demonstrated that professionals of different specialties who work collaboratively are likely to maximize the outcomes. Implications for practice, future research, and education will be discussed.
