Book excerpt: This study addresses a growing concern of academic dishonesty in higher education based on the theory that an increase in moral development may lead to an increase in moral behavior. Students' moral development and its relationship with student characteristics, co-curricular college experiences, and students' level of involvement (degree of commitment) in those experiences were examined. Three research questions were posited: (1) What is the relationship between student background characteristics (sex, academic level, and age) and students moral development? (2) What is the nature of the relationship between undergraduate involvement in co-curricular experiences (student government association, Greek life, Greek life leadership, structured internship, and faculty mentored research) and moral development? (3) What is the nature of the relationship between the level of involvement in co-curricular college experiences and moral development? Data were analyzed from a convenience sample of college students gathered through an on-line electronic survey. Moral development was measured by the moral judgment score (N2 index) obtained through participant responses to the Defining Issues Test-2 (DIT-2) (Rest, Narvaez, Bebeau, & Thoma, 1999). The relationship between the independent variables and moral development was measured using independent samples t-tests, between-subject Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), and general linear modeling. Two statistically significant findings were uncovered. Students who reported participation on a faculty mentored research project had higher levels of moral development (N2 index) than students who did not participate in this experience (p = .03); and sex showed statistically significant differences between males and females and moral development (N2 index) (p = .04). The findings suggest the need for more support of faculty members and their research projects to encourage student researchers. Evidence from this study shows college involvement through faculty member engagement plays a critical role in students' moral development and lays the groundwork for further investigation of factors that may influence this relationship.

It may well be that there has never been a time when college students were more eager to discuss fundamental questions about right and wrong, to examine their own moral values. This timely work is of value in any course touching upon moral values, including courses in sociology, education, political science and law, child development, criminal justice, and philosophy.

Book excerpt: The relationship between higher education and moral development has been of interest to researchers for more than six decades, with the majority of research focusing on normative patterns of moral reasoning development in college students. Yet, moral reasoning is only one aspect of moral functioning. Other moral capacities such as moral sensitivity, moral motivation, and moral character contribute to moral action. Indeed, exemplary moral functioning is characterized by a synergy and integrity in how the individual responds to the environment. This study examined the relationship between exemplary moral functioning and cognitive perceptions of the collegiate environment. Using the moral exemplar research design, the study explored between-group differences in cognitive perceptions of collegiate life, paying particular attention to how these perceptions shaped engagement and development. The results of this study demonstrate clear differences in the ways college student moral exemplars and their comparison peers perceive and prioritize collegiate experiences. These differences cannot be explained by differences in basic personality or moral reasoning ability. Unlike other college students, moral exemplars differentiate collegiate activities into clusters (i.e., academic life, social negatives, campus involvement, and personal growth) and prioritize personal growth experiences (e.g., learning about different worldviews or perspectives, advocating for an important cause). Future research is needed to better understand what personal or environmental factors contribute to these differences in perception and engagement.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to compare the changes in the perception of the university environment that occurred in four selected .groups of freshmen residence hall students: females residents in single-sex halls (N = 150), female residents in coeducational halls (N = 89), male residents in single-sex halls (N = 95), and male residents in coeducational halls (N = 96). The College and University Environment Scales was the instrument utilized to measure the students' perceptions of the university environment. Additional data were gathered from files in the Residence Hall Programs Office and from a brief questionnaire compiled by the investigator. During the week prior to the Fall term 1970 at Oregon State University the participants were administered the CUES and the supplemental questionnaire. The CUES was readministered six months later following two terms of in-residence living by the participants. The data was subjected to statistical analysis with the .05 level of significance being accepted as indicating degrees of confidence that differences were real. Hypotheses were stated in the null form indicating that, by comparison, no significant differences would appear. The following groups were statistically treated relative to the perceptual change in the university environment that occurred: 1. Freshmen females residing in single-sex residence halls. 2. Freshmen females residing in coeducational residence halls. 3. Freshmen males residing in single-sex residence halls. 4. Freshmen males residing in coeducational residence halls. The following group comparisons were statistically treated relative to differences in degree of change in perception of the university environment that occurred: 1. Freshmen females residing in coeducational residence halls and freshmen females residing in single-sex residence halls. 2. Freshmen males residing in coeducational residence halls and freshmen males residing in single-sex residence halls. 3. Freshmen residing in coeducational residence halls and freshmen residing in single-sex residence halls. 4. Freshmen males residing in residence halls and freshmen females residing in residence halls. 5. Interaction of coeducational and single-sex residence halls and freshmen male and female residents. From the findings of this study the following conclusions were drawn. 1. Freshmen students residing in residence halls change their perceptions of the university environment significantly on most scales and in a negative direction during their first six months of attendance at college. 2. Freshmen female residents in single-sex residence halls experience a significantly greater degree of change in their perception of the university environment on the Awareness scale than do freshmen female residents in coeducational residence halls. 3. Freshmen male residents in single-sex residence halls do not differ significantly in the degree of change in their perceptions of the university environment than do freshmen male residents in coeducational residence halls. 4. Freshmen residents in single-sex residence halls change their perception of the university environment to a significantly greater degree on the Awareness scale than do freshmen residents in coeducational residence halls. 5. Freshmen females residing in residence halls change their perception of the university environment to a significantly greater degree on the Community scale than do freshmen males residing in residence halls. 6. Freshmen males residing in residence halls change their perception of the university environment to a significantly greater degree on the Practicality scale than do freshmen females residing in residence halls. 7. A significant relationship exists between sex and type of residence hall on the Scholarship scale. Freshmen females residing in coeducational residence halls and freshmen males residing in single-sex residence halls change their perceptions significantly greater on the Scholarship scale than do freshmen males residing in coeducational residence halls and freshmen females residing in single-sex residence halls.

Book excerpt: The objective of this study was to determine if it was possible to predict retention within the University of Missouri-Columbia residence halls based on residents' perceptions of their Community Advisors/Resident Assistants and of their social interaction environment within living units. A 13% overall decline in the absolute number of students choosing to live in the halls within little more than ten years gave importance to the question of factors which might impact residence hall retention rates. The literature review indicated that the immediate environment of students played a major role in the degree to which new students became integrated into the campus. In order to help keep the focus on the students' immediate environment as opposed to the larger campus environment, social systems concepts and terminology was employed. Students were more likely to persist in college who became involved with a peer group which helped them to come integrated into the social and academic sub-systems of the campus. Community Advisors/Resident Assistants were identified as having a major role in the development and maintenance of the peer group social system within the residence hall living units. Two scales were developed to measure residents' perceptions of their Community Advisors/Resident Assistants and their immediate social interaction environment. A Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient confirmed the two scales (Community Advisor scale and Social Interaction and Structure scale) were correlated with each other at the.05 level of significance. A multiple analysis of variance and two one-way analyses of variance were used to test the relationship between the two scales and the retention of residents in the residence halls in the following fall semester. None of these three analyses were significant at the.05 specified level.
