Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Relation of Qoheleth to Comtemporary Greek Philosophy: A Thesis in Practical Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy According to Zelleri they held that the sun is sustained by the vapors from the sea; the moon by those from fresh water, and the stars by those from the land. This notion of vapors rising from the sea to higher regions of space was most likely taught the Hebrews by the Greeks; although it can hardly be affirmed that it was originally a Greek conception. Without being able to cite any authority, the writer is impressed with the belief that some Hebrew writers set forth the opinion that the sun and the moon attract the vapors of the waters, thus supplying themselves with new matter, to prevent annihilation. Book Three Philosophies of Life

Download or read book Three Philosophies of Life written by Peter Kreeft and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2009-12-08 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I've been a philosopher for all my adult life and the three most profound books of philosophy that I have ever read are Ecclesiastes, Job, and Song of Songs." These are the opening lines of Kreeft's Three Philosophies of Life. He reflects that there are ultimately only three philosophies of life and each one is represented by one of these books of the Bible-life is vanity; life is suffering; life is love. In these three books Kreeft shows how we have Dante's great epic The Divine Comedy played out, from Hell to Purgatory to Heaven. But it is an epic played out in our hearts and lives, here and now. Just as there is movement in Dante's epic, so there is movement in these books, from Ecclesiates to Job, from Job to Song of Songs. Love is the final answer to Ecclesiastes' quest, the alternative to vanity, and the true meaning of life. Finally, Kreeft sees in these books the epitome of theological virtues of faith, hope and love and "an esstential summary of the spiritual history of the world".

Book excerpt: This new addition to the successful Continental Commentary series is a significant and fresh treatment of Qoheleth (or Ecclesiastes). A famed professor presents a startlingly new translation of this often perplexing book of the Old Testament. Lohfink also argues for a rather different interpretation of the book than one finds elsewhere. Rather than reading the book's perspective as depressing, lost, or cynical, he highlights the elements of joy and balance. The volume includes introduction, new translation, commentary, parallel passages, bibliography, and indexes.

Book Parmenides and Empedocles

Download or read book Parmenides and Empedocles written by Parmenides, and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-03-01 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parmenides and Empedocles, along with Heraclitus the most important of the pre-Socratic philosophers, were at the same time among the greatest poets of the ancient world. But their work is rarely treated and still more rarely translated in its original form--as poetry. The complete extant fragments of Parmenides and Empedocles are collected here for the first time in a translation responsive to the original verse texts. Parmenides' philosophical fragments are here given as the poetic remains of the thinker from Elea in Southern Italy whom Socrates wondered at and Plato held in awe. What emerges from the poetry is at once an uncompromising vision of absolute Being and a compassionate understanding of the human cosmos: It is the body grows to Mind. All men desire the same thing, apprehend the same The plenum is thought, and thought preponderates. The poetry of Empedocles--reincarnationist, naturalist, cosmologist, religious leader, physiologist, and a metaphysician--is presented here in the personal idiom of the fifth-century Sicilian who has been called the last of the Greek shamans: I have already been A bush and a bird A boy and a girl A mute fish in the sea.
