Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1890 edition. Excerpt: ... PREFACE. IN presenting this little work to the public, it is earnestly hoped that a careful perusal of its contents will awaken a new interest in a subject that deserves careful and serious attention. My conclusions are reached after twenty-five years of membership in the Christian Church, all of which have been spent in official capacity, both in the Church proper and in the Sunday-school department of the Church. I have observed how the children of some families wander away from the Church as they reach manhood and womanhood, while those of others grow up in the Church and never leave it. I have also observed that when series of special meetings are held, and many adults are converted and brought into the Church, the prevailing opinion seems to be that if fifty per cent, remain the effort has been a success. Of course the other half drifts away with those who are called backsliders. The thought that has followed me through these years is this: Is such a condition of things absolutely necessary? if not, where lies the trouble? This led to a more careful reading of the Word of God and a study of the Discipline of my Church. I am satisfied that both the Bible and the Discipline warrant the position which I take in the following pages, and that the trouble is not in the plan of salvation, but in the neglect of Christian parents and Christian people generally to do their whole duty. This humble contribution upon the subject is given in good faith, and with no other desire than to do my share of the work of saving our children from sin and ruin. The Author. Relation of Baptized Children to the Church. CHAPTER I. JUDAISM AND CHRISTIANITY. GOD, whether in nature or revelation, is a God of system and order. It is this fact clearly seen that...

The reader may consequently be led to infer that Samuel is in the right, since his opponent has so little to say in opposition to his views. Book A Series of Letters on the Relation Rights Privileges and Duties of Baptized Children Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Series of Letters, on the Relation, Rights, Privileges and Duties of Baptized Children The publication of the following Letters, has been delayed sometime beyond the period contemplated. The author was fully aware of the serious responsibility attached to the publication of his views, which some consider new, and of very injurious tendency to the Church, which God has purchased with his own blood. He has now heard the main subject partially investigated in a session, and presbytery - and his general and more peculiar views discussed in the Synod of Kentucky; and no books have been neglected that were within hist reach, which could afford any aid, in the examination of the important subject. It is impossible to say how the author may hereafter be treated, or his sentiments canvassed; but nothing has vet taught him to expect, a calm, scriptural Refutation If such a thing, however, should appear, he will be thankful for it. Replies - personal remarks - dogmatical assertions, impeaching of motives, &c. he has experienced in some measure, but these things cannot destroy facts - or make the word of God of none effect - cannot in the present day screen error, or refute sound arguments. The publication is now made under the deliberate and mature conviction that the cause of TRUTH requires it, and that it may profit the Church of God. Book An Attempt to Answer the Question

Download or read book An Attempt to Answer the Question written by S. A. van Vranken and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Attempt to Answer the Question: Whose Children Are Entitled Titled to Baptism? The importance of the subject discussed in the following chapters Will hardly be de nied. If it be important that our children be baptized at all, it is important that all should be, that are entitled to the ordinance. The question of right has greatly agitated our churches, and notwithstanding the signal den feat that was sustained by the advocates of the exclusive system, in the decision of the Synod of '34, Opinions remain unchanged. Many are still grieved that their children are refused a place in the church, While they consider them entitled to that privilege. On the other hand, conscience is pleaded for re jecting them, as if it would be a profanation of holy things to receive them. Nothing can produce uniformity of practice, but uniformity in the principles adopted and any thing that looks like an approximation to this, must be the result, not of Synodical decisions, but of free and friendly discussion. Under this conviction the writer was dis posed to commence such a discussion in the columns of the Christian Intelligencer But the prudent Editors, fearful of the strife of pens, apprehended inconvenience from the design, and it was abandoned. The subject, however, continued to occupy a portion of at tention, and the following essay is the result. It would perhaps be a piece of vanity to an ticipate more from its publication, than the calling of the minds of our ministers and peo ple in some degree to the claims of our chil dren. The truth lies somewhere, and although we have no reason to look for entire uniformi' ty of opinion on any subject, yet I see noth ing to forbid the hope, that candour, judgment, and the love of truth, applied to the investiga tion, may do much towards effecting a greater degree of unity on this question, than at' pre sent exists. Download or read book The Scriptural Relation of Children to the Church of Christ Classic Reprint written by William McDonagh and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-21 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scriptural Relation of Children to the Church of Christ Thou art my God from before the birth. If by breach of law through the first Adam sin passed over on the children of our race, by so much more does grace pass over on them by the second Adam to sai vation and justification of life. And as sin passed over on our children unconditionally and without free choice on their part, so does the merit of the atone ment them unconditionally to salvation through the second Adam, the Lord Jesus Christ. The very existence of childhood, and, by consequence, of the race, is due to the atonement of Jesus Christ. It isonly necessary, without tracing the connection, to assert that, as the Apostle most distinctly amrms, sin became a curse to the whole of mankind by the transgression of the first man of our race. But Paul, also, asserts that the saving benefits of the atonement of Jesus Christ are as broad as the ruin wrought. If original sinfulness of nature affects the infants of our race, much more the saving benefits of salvation pass over to the infants of the race. See Romans 5: 12-21 for the argument of the Apostle on this question. Such also are the resurrection privi leges broadly stated by Paul to belong to humanity, and by consequence to the infants of our race who may have passed away out of this life in the early morning of their existence here. See 1 Cor. 15: 45. No other application of the Apostle 's argument seems to us at all admissible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Why Infants Are Baptized: An Essay It must be frankly admitted that many who accept the practice assign reasons for it which tend rather to increase than allay the doubts of inquirers. There can be little question that whether from this cause or from the failure of adequate direct instruction there is a wide diversity of opinion as to the significance of the sacrament when administered to infants and consequently as to the relation of baptized children to the Church. That this should tend to neglect in practice is not strange, and a comparison of the number of such baptisms with the number of communicants, at least as reported in the statistics of the Presbyterian Church, seems to indicate that neglect is far from uncommon. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Whose Children Ought to Be Baptized?: Or, an Examination Into the Present Administration of Baptism Much has lately been said and written on the subject of baptism; but no practical good has resulted therefrom: the question rests just where it was: various parties holding various opinions are still found amongst us. Even the decision in the late important case between the Bishop of Exeter and Mr. Gorham, only said what has long been said, that contending parties might continue to contend in the bosom of the same church; and in the midst of their contentions go on administering the Sacrament of Baptism, each holding their own peculiar views. And such doubtless will continue to be the case; we cannot make all men think alike. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Baptized Child It is not the object of this book to promote a sectarian observance of rites and forms. The wall of separation already made by them, between different denominations of Christians, is, in one sense, so high that it is dreadful.' The forms that characterize the various sects of true Christians, and even the differences in their doctrinal belief, may remain to the end1 of time but when the full power of Christianity is known, the manifestation of it will appear in the triumph of Christian love amongst the followers of Christ: andviii preface. Sprinkling, and Immersion, and Infant Baptism, the Right of Ordina tion, and the Liturgy, or Election and Perseverance, will be no greater hindrance to Christians, in their affection for each other and in their union to convert the world, than the different costumes adopted and worn by the different companies in a Fire Department should prevent their co-operation to put out a fire. All these things will be subordinated to the love of Christ, and of one another, because Christians will have learnt the spiritual nature of Christianity and looking upon their own denomination and upon others, the words of Christ Will be felt in their sublime and beautiful truth Woman believe me, the hour cometh when ye shall neither in this moun tain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. But the hour cometh and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth for the Father seeketh such to worship him. Then the world will feel that greatest proof of the divine origin of Christianity, The union of Christians in spite of the diversity in their forms and creeds. In view of past alienation and strife, that union will appear the greatest instance of the presence and power of God on earth since the days of miracles and therefore, Christ, in prophetic prayer, looked to this consummation as the triumph of his cause That they all may be one that the world may believe that Thou hast sent me. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frank A. James III describes this classic volume as "an apology for the Calvinist conviction that the children of Christian parents properly belong to the church and therefore ought to be admitted to its visible membership through the sacrament of baptism." "Schenck's passion and insight inspire us to discard our empty view of baptism with its sentimental, sleepy, and perfunctory notions of children," writes James in the introduction. "Instead, he would have us praise God for the wonderful grace extended to our covenant children." Schenck seeks to protect and preserve parents' responsibility to nurture their children spiritually.
