Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper, exploring the relationship between culture and fertility in Thailand, cites empirical evidence showing that each ethnic group's birth control practice is affected differently by different kinds of variables. For the Thais, birth control pactice is related to women's education and the number of live births. For the Chinese, place of residence, the level of household income and the number of children ever born are significantly related to the dependent variable. For the Moslems, none of these variables nor any of the other independent variables and covariates is significantly related to the practice of birth control. More research is needed in this area to find out what factors are most related to the adoption of birth control by the Muslims.

Book The Value of Family Planning Programs in Developing Countries

Download or read book The Value of Family Planning Programs in Developing Countries written by Rodolfo A. Bulatao and published by RAND Corporation. This book was released on 1998 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Family planning programs have been highly successful over the past 30 years in providing women in developing countries with desired access to contraceptive services and helping to reduce fertility rates. Notwithstanding this success, there is still an urgent need for these programs. The world's population is increasing, with annual population growth still approximately 80 million people. Nearly all of this growth is occurring in developing nations, where fertility rates remain relatively high. This high fertility runs counter to the preferences expressed by millions of women, who actually want to have smaller families. Family planning programs are also desirable because they are associated with a range of other benefits, most notably improvements in women's and children's health. Host countries provide about 60 to 75 percent of funding for family planning. However, funding and technical assistance from donor nations, especially the United States, have been crucial to the past success of family planning programs and are equally important for strengthening and expanding program efforts to meet future challenges.

Book Factors in the Achievement of Below replacement Fertility in Chiang Mai Thailand

Download or read book Factors in the Achievement of Below replacement Fertility in Chiang Mai Thailand written by Tieng Pardthaisong and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study assesses the impact of family planning programs on the fertility of women in the Chiang Mai province of Thailand, where family planning programs were introduced early in 1963. The study documents and estimates the fertility trend of Chiang Mai's population from existing sources of data. A demographic survey, in which a random sample of 3,805 ever married women from both urban and rural areas were interviewed using the World Fertility Survey questionnaire, was conducted. The socioeconomic characteristics and attitudes towards family size of Chiang Mai's urban and rural population are compared. The findings show that fertility has fallen rapidly in all sectors of the population and the decline is attributed to the introduction of family planning programs. The study concludes that family planning programs are one of the best possible means of slowing population growth rates to desired low levels in both urban and rural population. (SY)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is one of six titles resulting from the Ethnicity and Fertility in Southeast Asia Project that commences in 1980. Building upon the results of an earlier study, which established that ethnicity was a significant factor underlying fertility differentials among the various ethnic groups in Southeast Asia, the project aimed to explore in greater detail the extent to which ethnicity and ethnic factors such as ethnic attitudes, ethnic identification and cultural practices influenced reproductive behaviour. Instead of utilizing secondary sources, the project relied on primary data collected through the survey technique. In all, twenty ethnic groups from the five ASEAN countries were surveyed in this study which spanned a period of three years.

Book The Global Family Planning Revolution

Download or read book The Global Family Planning Revolution written by Warren C. Robinson and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2007 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The striking upsurge in population growth rates in developing countries at the close of World War II gained force during the next decade. From the 1950s to the 1970s, scholars and advocacy groups publicized the trend and drew troubling conclusions about its economic and ecological implications. Private educational and philanthropic organizations, government, and international organizations joined in the struggle to reduce fertility. Three decades later this movement has seen changes beyond anyone's most optimistic dreams, and global demographic stabilization is expected in this century. The Global Family Planning Revolution preserves the remarkable record of this success. Its editors and authors offer more than a historical record. They disccuss important lessons for current and future initiatives of the international community. Some programs succeeded while others initially failed, and the analyses provide valuable guidance for emerging health-related policy objectives and responses to global challenges.
