Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reigning Belle Around her were such glowing colors, in masses, or floating airily through the room, that a face less richly tinted would have seemed pal-e by contrast. Behind her was a pile Of India Shawls, in which the rays Of a gorgeous sunset seemed to have mellowed down in one soft, glowing heap. By her side was a morning-dress Of Oriental cash mere, with Vivid palm-leaves running far up the skirt, which trailed down from the wire skeleton that supported it, and swept the floor like the plumage Of 3. Peacock. In fact this vast show-room was one panorama Of bright, beautiful things; and most beautiful Of all was the young girl, with her rich complexion, just verging on the bru nette, and her large, blue-gray eyes, that looked out from their sweeping lashes like shadowed waters where the rushes grow thickly. Her hair, too, was lustrous and abundant, neither black, auburn, nor brown, but with a gleam of each as the light chanced to fall on it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Belle: Or, the Promised Blessing After three years of weary separation from his wife and children, Mr. Cortlandt was once more to be welcomed home. The hickory fire sent its cheerful blaze up the wide chimney, and flashed and flickered as if partaking of the general joy, while the polished tea equipage and the shining door knobs caught its bright rays, and returned an answering sparkle. Stretched back in an arm-chair, and resting his feet on the fender, sat Willy Cortlandt, the very picture of perfect contentment and quiet satisfaction. • Author : Ebenezer Wheelwright
  • Publisher : Penn State Press
  • Release : 2016-01-08

  • Pages : 150 pages

Download or read book The Salem Belle written by Ebenezer Wheelwright and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2016-01-08 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Salem Belle is a historical novel, a tale of vengeance and superstition set against the Salem witchcraft tragedy of 1692. Rejected by the beautiful Mary—“the Salem belle”—the bitter Trellison accuses her of witchcraft, mistakenly thinking himself motivated by religious faith. She is quickly tried and convicted, and her brother James and her fiancé, Walter, must try to rescue the persecuted woman. Engaging in its own right, The Salem Belle invites renewed interest because it is a critical source for Nathaniel Hawthorne’s masterwork, The Scarlet Letter. Hawthorne transformed three scenes from Wheelwright’s novel for his own. In so doing, Hawthorne covertly elaborated his lifelong theme: original sin and the possibility of redemption. Hawthorne scholar Richard Kopley, who has recovered The Salem Belle for twenty-first-century literary study, introduces and annotates Wheelwright’s novel, providing relevant historical details as well as pertinent details about Wheelwright’s life and reading. Kopley also furnishes three appendixes that will facilitate understanding of The Salem Belle and further analysis of its place in American literary history.

History ultimately puts every man in his proper place, and when these tumultuous times Shall have passed away and mature judgment shall have opportunity to be heard, the great Victorians will, I know, be restored to universal honour, and their hoity-toity detractors will be forgotten. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncle Tom's Cabin is an anti-slavery novel by American author Harriet Beecher Stowe, published in 1852. After the publication of Uncle Tom's Cabin, Southerners accused Stowe of misrepresenting slavery. In order to show that she had neither lied about slavery nor exaggerated the plight of enslaved people, she compiled The Key to Uncle Tom's Cabin. The Key to Uncle Tom's Cabin was published to document the veracity of the depiction of slavery in Stowe's anti-slavery novel Uncle Tom's Cabin. First published in 1853, the book also provides insights into Stowe's own views on slavery. The book was subtitled "Presenting the Original Facts and Documents upon Which the Story Is Founded, Together with Corroborative Statements Verifying the Truth of the Work". Harriet Beecher Stowe ( 1811 – 1896) was an American abolitionist and author. Her novel Uncle Tom's Cabin was a depiction of life for African Americans under slavery. It energized anti-slavery forces in the American North, while provoking widespread anger in the South. She wrote more than 20 books, including novels, three travel memoirs, and collections of articles and letters. She was influential both for her writings and her public stands on social issues of the day.
