Book The Reign of the Emperor Probus

Download or read book The Reign of the Emperor Probus written by James Harold Edward Crees and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reign of the Emperor Probus This essay deals chiefly with the Reign of the Emperor Probus. But the essential preliminary to an investigation of the reign of any emperor who ruled between A.D.117 and 285 is an examination of the Augustan History, and therefore considerable space has necessarily been devoted to a discussion of the views which have been put forward, from time to time, by so many scholars. The controversy as to the date and authenticity of the Augustan History has been maintained chiefly by German, Italian and French scholars, and, so far as I am aware, no monograph dealing with the subject has yet appeared in England. Miss Orma Fitch Butler, of the Oxford College for Women (Ohio), in Studies in the Life of Heliogabalus has recently discussed the question of the authorship of the Augustan History. The conclusions to which I have come were arrived at before I had had the advantage of seeing her work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Roman Empire from Severus to Constantine

Download or read book The Roman Empire from Severus to Constantine written by Patricia Southern and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third century of the Roman Empire is a confused and sparsely documented period, punctuated by wars, victorious conquests and ignominious losses, and a recurring cycle of rebellions that saw several Emperors created and eliminated by the Roman armies. In AD 260 the Empire almost collapsed, and yet by the end of the third century the Roman world was brought back together and survived for another two hundred years. In this new edition of The Roman Empire from Severus to Constantine, Patricia Southern examines the anarchic era of the soldier Emperors that preceded the crisis of AD 260, and the reigns of underrated and sometimes maligned Emperors such as Gallienus, Probus and Aurelian, whose determination and hard work reunited and re-established the Empire. Their achievements laid the foundations for the absolutist, sacrosanct rule of Diocletian, honed to ruthless perfection by Constantine, whose reign transformed the pagan Empire into a Christian state. The successes and failures of the rulers of the Roman world of the third century, and the role of the armies and the civilians, are re-assessed in this revised and expanded edition of The Roman Empire from Severus to Constantine, which incorporates the latest thinking of modern scholars and has been extended to cover the reign of Constantine and the foundations he laid on which the Christian empire was built. This is a crucial volume for students of this fascinating period in Roman history, and provides invaluable background for anyone interested in the "fall of Rome", the adoption of Christianity, and the establishment of the Byzantine Empire.

Download or read book Aurelian and Probus written by Ilkka Syvänne and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2020-06-24 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth military history of the emperors Lucius Domitius Aurelianus and Marcus Aurelius Probus. This is a narrative military history of the emperors Lucius Domitius Aurelianus (“Aurelian,” reigned 270-275) and Marcus Aurelius Probus (276-282) that also includes the other reigns between the years 268 and 285. It shows how these two remarkable emperors were chiefly responsible for the Empire surviving and emerging largely intact from a period of intense crisis. It was Aurelian who first united the breakaway regions, including Zenobia’s Palmyra, and it was Probus who then secured his achievements. The reigns of Aurelian and Probus have been subjected to many studies, but none of these have approached the extant material purely from the point of view of military analysis. Most importantly, the previous historians have not exploited the analytical opportunities provided by the military treatises that describe the strategy and tactics of the period Roman army. It is thanks to this new methodology that Ilkka Syvänne has been able to reconstruct the military campaigns of these two soldier emperors and their other contemporaries in far greater detail than has been possible before. Praise for Aurelian and Probus “A critical work... Aurelian and Probus is a very good look at a very confusing period in Roman history.” —The NYMAS Review
