Book VOCATIONAL and REHABILITATION COUNSELING in ACTION

This book was released on 2018-07-02 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine one day you suddenly incur a physical injury, a severe mental trauma, or are diagnosed with a debilitating disease. Imagine you are in pain, unable to work, unable to drive, unable to sleep because of pain, or walk without help. You now have a disability. Possibly a permanent one. Your life just changed suddenly, drastically, and might never be the same again. Your income is gone or reduced, you cannot do any of the things you love to do, and you might even need help with daily living. Those who are physically able will eventually need to find a job they can do within their new limitations. This scenario has happened to over 30 million people between the ages of 18 and 64 in the U.S. alone. As a veteran counselor I have worked with well over a thousand individuals with disabilities. I have gained an intimate knowledge of many disabilities, as well as the impact upon each individual. I gained first-hand experience of the stigma associated with disability, and employer discrimination. Those with disabilities are largely unaware of the great resources available through federally mandated, state run rehabilitation programs. Those resources fall under an umbrella labeled "Vocational Rehabilitation"The counselors who work in those agencies can offer emotional, mental health, social and living supports. Such as one on one counseling, inter-agency coordination, and referrals for other important living, health and community supports. Also financial supports to retrain, re-educate and rehabilitate the clients. You will find many examples of actual interviews, case studies and observations in this book. This book presents an in-depth look at real vocational rehabilitation in the field, with an emphasis on a person-centered approach to VR.
