Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Register of Burials at the Temple Church: 1628-1853 The first portion of this Register, down to the end of the year 1714, has already appeared in print in Appendices to the second and third volumes (published in 1898 and 1901 respectively), of the 'Calendar of the Inner Temple Records, ' edited by F. A. Inderwick, one of the Masters of the Bench. The type was kept standing, with the idea that it might afterwards be found desirable to print the complete Register. This has now been done by order of the Library Committee of the Inner Temple, with the consent and support of the Society of the Middle Temple. The Register is contained in three volumes, and covers a period of 224 years, the earliest entry being dated February 19, 1628 [-29], and the latest, May 28, 1853. The entries from May 3, 1695 to January 2, 1704 [-05] have for some reason been copied into volume i, the originals being at the beginning of volume ii. In other places it seems as if several entries had been made at the same time, probably from memorandum slips. There are a few transpositions, and at least one serious omission. On the fly-leaf of volume ii. is a list of 'Fees due to the Buttlers for the Buriall of a Gent out of Middle Temple Hall, ' dated April 19, 1726. Dr. Micklethwaite, by whose order this 'Catalogue of Burialls' was begun, had a stormy Mastership; but in this matter he did good service. The use of the untechnical word 'Catalogue' (altered to 'Register' in 1639) probably implies that no previous Register existed in 1628. None at any rate has come down to us, and very little is known about earlier burials. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Temple Church in London

Download or read book The Temple Church in London written by Robin Griffith-Jones and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2010 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded as the main church of the Knights Templar in England, at their New Temple in London, the Temple Church is historically and architecturally one of the most important medieval buildings in England. Its round nave, modelled on the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, is extraordinarily ambitious, combining lavish Romanesque sculpture with some of the earliest Gothic architectural features in any English building of its period. It holds one of the most famous series of medieval effigies in the country. The luminous thirteenth-century choir, intended for the burial of Henry III, is of exceptional beauty. Major developments in the post-medieval period include the reordering of the church in the 1680s by Sir Christopher Wren, and a substantial restoration programme in the early 1840s. Despite its extraordinary importance, however, it has until now attracted little scholarly or critical attention, a gap which is remedied by this volume. It considers the New Temple as a whole in the middle ages, and all aspects of the church itself from its foundation in the twelfth century to its war-time damage in the twentieth. Richly illustrated with numerous black and white and colour plates, it makes full use of the exceptional range and quality of the antiquarian material available for study, including drawings, photographs, and plaster casts. Contributors: Robin Griffith-Jones, Virginia Jansen, Philip Lankester, Helen Nicholson, David Park, Rosemary Sweet, William Whyte, Christopher Wilson.

This book was released on 1908 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Key to the Ancient Parish Registers of England and Wales In the performance of my task no available source of information has been unexplored, and it is hoped that the Annotated Index, which shows at a glance the date of the earliest entry in every Parish Register in England and Wales, and in which every transcript that has been printed is noted, will prove by its usefulness that my labours have not been in vain. I am only too conscious of the shortcomings of this publication, but can at least plead that I have honestly endeavoured, at a sacrifice of much time and labour, to compile a work which may be both of some historical interest and of some real value to the genealogist. Book The Knights Templar on Trial

Download or read book The Knights Templar on Trial written by Helen J Nicholson and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2011-08-26 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The trial of the Templars in the British Isles (1308-1311) is a largely unexplored area of history. Unlike the trial in France, where the Templars were tortured into confessing to unspeakable activities, in the British Isles there were no burnings and only three confessions after torture. Several Templars went missing, most of whom later reappeared. Outsiders told stories of abominable Templar rituals, secret meetings and murders at the dead of night, but all these tales turned out to be rumour. This book is based on extensive research into the records of the trial of trial of the Templars and other unpublished medieval documents recording their arrest, imprisonment and trial, and the surveys of their property. It traces the course of this, the first heresy of trial in the British Isles, from the arrests in January 1308 to the dissolution of the Order, and shows how, by judicious selection of material, the inquisitors made the scanty evidence against the Templars appear convincing. The book includes a list of all the Templars in the British Isles at the time of the arrests, and a gazetteer of the Templars' major properties in the British Isles.

Book Baptism and Spiritual Kinship in Early Modern England

Download or read book Baptism and Spiritual Kinship in Early Modern England written by Will Coster and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the importance of the subject to contemporaries, this is the first monograph to look at the institution of godparenthood in early modern English society. Utilising a wealth of hitherto largely neglected primary source data, this work explores godparenthood, using it as a framework to illuminate wider issues of spiritual kinship and theological change. It has become increasingly common for general studies of family and religious life in pre-industrial England to make reference to the spiritual kinship evident in the institution of godparenthood. However, although there have been a number of important studies of the impact of the institution in other periods, this is the first detailed monograph devoted to the subject in early modern England. This study is possible due to the survival, contrary to many expectations, of relatively large numbers of parish registers that recorded the identities of godparents in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. By utilising this hitherto largely neglected data, in conjunction with evidence gleaned from over 20,000 Wills and numerous other biographical, legal and theological sources, Coster has been able to explore fully the institution of godparenthood and the role it played in society. This book takes the opportunity to study an institution which interacted with a range of social and cultural factors, and to assess the nature of these elements within early modern English society. It also allows the findings of such an investigation to be compared with the assumptions that have been made about the fortunes of the institution in the context of a changing European society. The recent historiography of religion in this period has focused attention on popular elements of religious practice, and stressed the conservatism of a society faced with dramatic theological and ritual change. In this context a study of godparenthood can make a contribution to understanding how religious change occurred and the ways in which popular religious practice was affected.
