Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reformation in Germany Within a generation a new way of looking at all history has become common among students of the past, a recognition of the fundamental importance of the economic basis of society, and the influence of economic changes on all human institutions and movements. The economic interpretation of history has not yet been applied to the period of the Reformation, and that fact is the chief justification of this attempt to retell a story that has been so often told, yet told inadequately. That the great religious struggle of the sixteenth century was only a phase of the social revolution then going on in Europe and effecting a transforma tion of all its institutions, that momentous economic changes were the underlying cause of political and religious movements, are ideas for which the reader will look in vain in books on the Reformation accessible to him. But these ideas are now accepted by most historical students, and in the light of them all the history of the past is undergoing a reinterpretation. The external events of the Reformation have been told before with substantial accuracy; what is now needed is illumination of the facts by the light of this new knowledge. By itself this would be a sufficient justification for the writing of a new book on this old subject. But there are other reasons. For more than a generation, Europe has been swept with lighted candle to find the smallest fragment of document, or one overlooked fact, that could shed light on the Reformation period. The result has been the accumulation of an enormous mass of material, much of it trivial and jejune - mountains of chaff, to speak plainly, with here and there a kernel of precious wheat. Little, relatively, has been done in the way of comparing, sifting, unifying this mass of useful and useless information. Monographs have multiplied, it is true, until every character of the age, however little noteworthy, has his biography; and every event, however obscure, has its separate doc umented story. Has not the time come for the telling of the larger story once more, in the light of this newly discovered body of fact? Download or read book The Social Side of the Reformation in Germany Classic Reprint written by Ernest Belfort Bax and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Side of the Reformation in Germany The present volume, the third of the series, concludes our studies of the social side of the Reformation in Germany. Anabaptism was essentially a German product and did not take root in the Latin countries. But the importance of this great movement in all lands possessing a strong Teutonic element, not even excluding England, has been little realised by the average historian. The latter has been inclined for the most part to dismiss this tremendous upheaval of the disinherited classes at the close of the Middle Ages with a few paragraphs of abuse and often misrepresentation. We may regard Anabaptism as the culminating effort of mediaeval Christian Communism, which saw in the communisation of worldly goods (understanding by this the economic products designed for consumption) the farthest goal of man's social existence. The modern notion of the socialisation of the means of production was not as yet thought of, as it was not even conceivably possible at the then stage of economic evolution. Book A History of the Reformation Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of the Reformation Classic Reprint written by Thomas M. Lindsay and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Reformation This History of the Reformation has been written with the intention of describing a great religious movement amid its social environment. The times were heroic, and produced great men, with striking individualities not easily weighed in modern balances. The age is sufficiently remote to compel us to remember that while the morality of one century can be judged by another, the men who belong to it must be judged by the standard of their contemporaries, and not altogether by ours. The religious revival was set in a framework of political, intellectual, and economic changes, and cannot be disentangled from its surroundings without danger of mutilation. All these things add to the difficulty of description. My excuse, if excuse be needed, for venturing on the task is that the period is one to which I have devoted special attention for many years, and that I have read and re-read most of the original contemporary sources of information. While full use has been made of the labours of predecessors in the same field, no chapter in the volume, save that on the political condition of Europe, has been written without constant reference to contemporary evidence. This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from List of References on the History of the Reformation in Germany The approaching four hundredth anniversary of the post ing of Luther's Theses on the 315t of October, 1517, has aroused a great deal of interest in the United States. To facilitate the study of the German Reformation the present annotated list has been prepared. It does not aim at com pleteness such as has been the goal of great works like the Quellenkunde of bahlmann-waitz. The eighth edition of that indispensable bibliography carries the literature down through the year 1910 and contains many titles as late as 1912. The present list may be used in connection with Dahl mann-waitz in such a way as readily to open up extensive ramifications of the literature which limited space has com pelled us to omit. Thus among the books we mention on Luther's Table Talk is a monograph by Preserved Smith which is listed in the index to Bahlmann - Waitz under number 7403. Looking up that number in the body of the reference work we find mentioned thirteen other editions or mono graphs bearing on the Table Talk. Book Martin Luther and the Reformation in Germany

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Martin Luther and the Reformation in Germany: Until the Close of the Diet of Worms My editorial duties have been hardly more than to see through the press a singularly and characteristically perfect manuscript; and they have been lightened by the faithful care with which Mrs. Beard and her son, Mr. Lewis Beard, b.a., have compared manuscript and proof. I have considered it needful, in order to guard against accidental error, to exercise a general supervision of the narrative, to compare quotations with the original passages, and to verify references. N o alterations have been introduced into the text or the notes, except where an obvious lapsus calami had crept in, which, however, thanks to the author's extreme accuracy, has happened but very occasionally. Here and there in the notes a reference to books or articles published since the manuscript was finished has been added. For the title of the volume, the headings of the chapters and the pages, and the list of the principal authorities and editions used by the author, I am responsible; and for the Index, Mr. Lewis Beard. Book The Continental Reformation in Germany France and Switzerland

Download or read book The Continental Reformation in Germany France and Switzerland written by Alfred Plummer and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Continental Reformation in Germany, France, and Switzerland: From the Birth of Luther to the Death of Calvin This little volume reproduces the substance, and for the most part the exact words, of four lectures which were delivered to clergy at Oxford in July, 1911, and which have appeared, in somewhat abbreviated form, as a series of papers in The Churchman, October, 1911 - May, 1912. What was omitted there has been restored here, and considerable additions have been made, in some places to the text, and in many places to the notes. For lack of time, very few of the notes were read when the lectures were delivered. At the conclusion of the course, the lecturer was by some who had heard him whether what he had said would be published, and he was unable at the time to make any certain reply. The papers in The Churchman were a partial response to that suggestion, and the present volume is a more complete response. For convenience, the first three lecture have each of them been divided into two sections, and the fourth lecture has been divided into three. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Great Reformation of the Sixteenth Century in Germany, Switzerland, &C, Vol. 1: Eighteenth Thousand The su denness of its action is one of these characters of the Reforma tion. The great revolutions which have drawn after them the fall of a monarchy, or an entire change of political system, or launched the human mind in a new career of developement, have been slowly and gradually prepared; the power to be displaced has long been mine and its princi pal supports have given way. It was even thus at the introduction of Christianity. But the Reformation, at the first glance, seems to ofi'er a difi'erexit aspect. The Church of Rome is seen, under Leo X., in all its strength and glory. A monk s aks, -and in the half of Europe this power and glory suddenly crum ls into dust. This revolution reminds us of the words by which the Son of God announces his second advent: As the lightning cometh forth from the west and shineth unto the east, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
