Book Behind the Scenes Or Life in an Insane Asylum

Download or read book Behind the Scenes Or Life in an Insane Asylum written by Lydia Adeline Jackson Button Smith and published by Theclassics.Us. This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1878 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XIV. To the People of the State of Michigan: Come, let us reason together. Let us look at this asylum question in its true light. Let us who pay our money for the support of this institution demand that it be conducted on the same principle the law makes provision for. Our insane are taken to the asylum retreat to be cared for and benefited, and not to be injured. Our state law (referring to the asylum law) says, first, " Care shall be taken that no person be injured." (It matters not how violent a patient may be, they can be managed without injury.) Let us see to it that this law be observed. Second, " That every patient shall be seen, and notice taken of their condition, as often as once or twice a day, as the case may demand." Third, "That no person be received as a patient unless first examined by two physicians, and pronounced a fit subject for the asylum." And furthermore, " that no person be detained there who is not really insane." And another consideration, "There should be no ignorant or unprincipled attendants employed." I know for a positive fact that these laws were not regarded nor kept by those who had charge of this institution, and that the said superintendent, Dr. E. H. Vandusen, was not only guilty of gross neglect, but also of wilful and premeditated wrongs. The first lessons were not learned at Kalamazoo, as the Tyler case and others will show. I think it very important that there should be a law providing a fund of relief or compensation where attendants are injured by violent patients. There has been no such provision made as yet. Let this subject be considered. One attendant was seriously injured while I was there by being bitten by a patient. She was so much injured that she had to go to a great expense...

Book Entrapping Asylum Seekers

Download or read book Entrapping Asylum Seekers written by Francesco Vecchio and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an interdisciplinary attempt to understand the contemporaneous human condition of asylum seekers through analysis of their entrapment and the resultant new forms of resistance that have emerged to combat it. Based on qualitative research data, the chapters support the claim that asylum seekers are entrapped in social, legal and economic precariousness amidst the complex relationship between individual agency and social structure. By exploring the practices and lived experiences of asylum seekers and other parties involved in their migration and reception, the authors explore the structural and individual agency factors that entrap asylum seekers in precarious livelihoods and lead to marginalization and social exclusion. A bold and timely study, this edited collection will be essential reading for academics and students of criminology, sociology, anthropology, urban studies and social policy.

This book is his own true account of what transpired before and after his escape from the lunatic asylum. Note: This book is intended for mature young adult, new adult, and older audiences due to profanity and sensual content. BACKGROUND: The inspiration for the story came from Sandie's beloved father who worked in various psychiatric hospitals during short periods of his career. In the attic of one such hospital, he made a disturbing discovery - one that bothered Sandie so much, she had to create a story around it. Though fiction, many parts of the book intertwine the patient routines, treatments and outbursts that she learned from her father and other research in a way that makes the story vivid through Jeannie's perspective. PRAISE FOR THE CAGING AT DEADWATER MANOR: "Great read! Fantastic work on this very addictive book. I couldn't put it down but didn't want it to be over either from page 1 to the end. A true literary masterpiece." Brian Miller, Amazon Customer "This is a polished independent novel that skillfully blends coming-of-age, mystery, and suspense genre elements. Book excerpt: Welcome to Hawthorne Asylum. Welcome to hell. This place isn't run by the doctors who make you talk or the orderlies who force you to swallow your pills. It belongs to them, to the Infamous Four. Tabloids, talk shows, documentaries--their faces have been plastered everywhere. Not because of their impressive rap sheets, but because of how they look. And when I arrive, they take notice. Especially their king: Lincoln "Laces" Caster. He's dark and disturbed. He's controlling and possessive. Exactly the kind of boy I should stay away from if I want to clear my name and get out of here. *LACES is not intended for readers under seventeen. This book has strong language/cursing and triggering scenes (that might not be suitable for everybody). Laces is a slow burn that builds toward intimate scenes as the series progresses. This is book one in the Boys of Hawthorne Asylum series. Books 1-3 is Laces story.

Book The Arc of Protection

Download or read book The Arc of Protection written by T. Alexander Aleinikoff and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The international refugee regime is fundamentally broken. Designed in the wake of World War II to provide protection and assistance, the system is unable to address the record numbers of persons displaced by conflict and violence today. States have put up fences and adopted policies to deny, deter, and detain asylum seekers. People recognized as refugees are routinely denied rights guaranteed by international law. The results are dismal for the millions of refugees around the world who are left with slender prospects to rebuild their lives or contribute to host communities. T. Alexander Aleinikoff and Leah Zamore lay bare the underlying global crisis of responsibility. The Arc of Protection adopts a revisionist and critical perspective that examines the original premises of the international refugee regime. Aleinikoff and Zamore identify compromises at the founding of the system that attempted to balance humanitarian ideals and sovereign control of their borders by states. This book offers a way out of the current international morass through refocusing on responsibility-sharing, seeing the humanitarian-development divide in a new light, and putting refugee rights front and center.

Book The Search for Home among Forced Migrants and Refugees

Download or read book The Search for Home among Forced Migrants and Refugees written by Maria Sophia Aguirre and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-08 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the role of “home” in the lives of displaced people, including voluntary and forced migrants, refugees, asylum seekers, internally displaced people, and temporary workers. For displaced people, home is something lost, longed for, and sometimes found anew. It is a community of people in an environment of relationships and a physical dwelling that provide a sense of safety, security, hope, and belonging. Much of the efforts of refugees, migrants and exiles are devoted to rebuilding a home, through a combination of personal effort and collaboration with the political and social environment of the host community. Aguirre and Argandoña bring together an interdisciplinary collection of contributors to analyse these challenges through the lenses of economics, law, sociology, psychology, communications, management and political science. The book offers numerous suggestions for assistance aimed not only at the short-term problems of displaced people, but also at ensuring their human dignity. This volume will be a valuable resource for students and scholars of the sociology of migration and of public policy related to the handling of migrants.
