Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology is in many was a ‘best of the best’, containing gems from thirty-four of Britain's outstanding contemporary writers. It is a book to dip into, to read from cover to cover, to lend to friends and read again. It includes stories of love and crime, stories touched with comedy and the supernatural, stories set in London, Los Angeles, Bucharest and Tokyo. Above all, as you will discover, it satisfies Samuel Butler's anarchic pleasure principle: 'I should like to like Schumann's music better than I do; I daresay I could make myself like it better if I tried; but I do not like having to try to make myself like things; I like things that make me like them at once and no trying at all ...'
Download or read book Jungvolk written by Wilhelm Gehlen and published by Casemate. This book was released on 2008-06-19 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An extraordinary account of a young boy caught up in the middle of a war . . . frank and even funny at times . . . utterly absorbing” (Books Monthly). This is the wartime memoir of a boy named Will, who happened to be the nephew of the head of Nazi Germany’s intelligence agency. The author, only ten years old when the war began, became a helper at the local Luftwaffe flak battery, fetching ammunition. It was exciting work for Will, a member of the “Jungvolk,” and by the end of the war, he had become expert at judging attacks. As fighter raids increased in frequency, he noted that the pilots became less skilled. Gehlen’s town was repeatedly bombed, and he often had to help with the wreckage or to pull survivors from basements. He witnessed more death than a child ever should; nevertheless, his flak battery continued firing until US tanks were almost on top of the position. In this book, Gehlen provides an intimate glimpse of the chaos, horror, and black humor of life just behind the front lines. As seen through the eyes of a child who was expert in aircraft identification and bomb weights, food-rationing and tank types, one encounters a view of life inside Hitler’s wartime Reich that is both fascinating and rare. “Although the memories Gehlen shares are narrow, and offer little insight into the Reich itself, they’re remarkable for the child’s perspective they bring to bear on a warring country’s ferocious struggle.” —Publishers Weekly “A real gem, a quiet tour de force . . . Despite its serious subject matter the book reads as an adventure story from start to finish.” —Military Modelling
Download or read book Black Lives 1900 W E B Du Bois at the Paris Exposition written by William Edward Burghardt Du Bois and published by . This book was released on 2019-10-29 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How W.E.B. Du Bois combined photographs and infographics to communicate the everyday realities of Black lives and the inequities of race in America At the 1900 Paris Exposition the pioneering sociologist and activist W.E.B. Du Bois presented an exhibit representing the progress of African Americans since the abolition of slavery. In striking graphic visualisations and photographs (taken by mostly anonymous photographers) he showed the changing status of a newly emancipated people across America and specifically in Georgia, the state with the largest Black population. This beautifully designed book reproduces the photographs alongside the revolutionary graphic works for the first time, and includes a marvelous essay by two celebrated art historians, Jacqueline Francis and Stephen G. Hall. Du Bois' hand-drawn charts, maps and graphs represented the achievements and economic conditions of African Americans in radically inventive forms, long before such data visualization was commonly used in social research. Their clarity and simplicity seems to anticipate the abstract art of the Russian constructivists and other modernist painters to come. The photographs were drawn from African American communities across the United States. Both the photographers and subjects are mostly anonymous. They show people engaged in various occupations or posing formally for group and studio portraits. Elegant and dignified, they refute the degrading stereotypes of Black people then prevalent in white America. Du Bois' exhibit at the Paris Exposition continues to resonate as a powerful affirmation of the equal rights of Black Americans to lives of freedom and fulfilment. Black Lives 1900 captures this singular work. American sociologist, historian, author, editor and activist W.E.B. Du Bois (1868-1963) was the most influential Black civil rights activist of the first half of the 20th century. He was a protagonist in the founding of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1909, and his 1903 bookThe Souls of Black Folk remains a classic and a landmark of African American literature.

Download or read book Postcards from Penguin written by Penguin and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2010-09-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of 100 postcards, each featuring a different and iconic Penguin book jacket. From classics to crime, here are over seventy years of quintessentially British design in one box. In 1935 Allen Lane stood on a platform at Exeter railway station, looking for a good book for the journey to London. His disappointment at the poor range of paperbacks on offer led him to found Penguin Books. The quality paperback had arrived. Declaring that 'good design is no more expensive than bad', Lane was adamant that his Penguin paperbacks should cost no more than a packet of cigarettes, but that they should always look distinctive. Ever since then, from their original - now world-famous - look featuring three bold horizontal stripes, through many different stylish, inventive and iconic cover designs, Penguin's paperback jackets have been a constantly evolving part of Britain's culture. And whether they're for classics, crime, reference or prize-winning novels, they still follow Allen Lane's original design mantra. Sometimes, you definitely should judge a book by its cover.
Download or read book The Redstone Diary 2023 written by Julian Rothenstein and published by . This book was released on 2022-05-31 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2023 edition of the beloved cult diary explores the theme of beauty What is beauty? Philosophers have often asked the question--as have artists, poets, lovers, thinkers, explorers, family, friends. Is this thing, this person, this place, this quality really beautiful in and of itself, or is it the viewer that brings the beauty to the object? And what exactly is our experience of beauty? Is it wonder? Is it terror? Is it longing? Is it love? Does beauty exist only in particular things, or in universal characteristics, in certain shapes and forms? Where does physical beauty end and spiritual beauty begin? What is the relationship between beauty and truth? And are all our assumptions about beauty simply prejudices in disguise? There are no easy answers to any of these questions. As always, the Redstone Diary offers only examples--and the beautiful promise of another year. "There may be no great diarists, then, but there are still great diaries.... In the midst of one's self-obsessions, the Redstone Diary reminds one of other worlds," declared writer Ian Sansom in the Guardian. The agenda is designed with practicality as well as aesthetics in mind, with sturdy spiral binding and a weekly layout that provides ample space for one's plans. The diary features contributions and excerpts from John Baldessari, W.E.B. Du Bois, Louise Bourgeois, Sonia Delaunay, Gilbert and George, Seamus Heaney, Edvard Munch, Marc Quinn and Oliver Sacks.
