Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kendra Barker's a long way from her Canadian home. Her road trip has landed her and her 1983 Harley in Cataluma, California, but she only plans to stay long enough to rest, maybe make a few dollars, and enjoy the Strawberry Festival. As a bonus, the one place she finds to stay is an empty apartment with a super sexy landlord. Javier Fernandez has been cruising through life on autopilot. His marijuana shop is doing well. His mother is, for the most part, under control and managing her job as mayor of his beloved Cataluma. Now, he just needs to get this pesky Canadian woman out of his head. He gave her a place to sleep, and he very much wants to be in her bed, but come the end of the weekend, she’ll be moving on. Javier doesn't do one-nighters and he doesn’t want to deal with a broken heart. Long-distance, and cross-borders is a recipe for disaster, right? High on Love is a story in the Shopping for Love in Cataluma series. The book is a 39k word small-town interracial romance novella with a tattooed heroine, a stoic hero, and the love affair that’ll change their lives forever.

Book Stories for in the Campfire

Download or read book Stories for in the Campfire written by Ronaldo Siète and published by Editorial Perdido. This book was released on 2017-02-01 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 New Joke Times Bestseller @Ronaldo7Siete is serious about only one thing: he thinks he's the funniest writer at Wattpad. Of course, everybody laughs about that, but… doesn't that mean that he has a point? In 9 tragedies Ronaldo warns us about writing; he tells about his experiences and advises us: "Don't try this at home, kids." In 9 comedies you can read what happens if you don't follow that advice: you'll become the joke of the day, the absolute number 1 at the New Joke Times Bestseller list. Is Ronaldo7 really the funniest writer at Wattpad or is anyone crazy enough to accept the challenge? Is this really a bundle of 18 short stories or did Ronaldo7 trick his readers? He is, in fact, a novel writer, and he does write great plots. You have a choice: read the book, or burn it (at Fahrenheit 451 degrees). Disclaimer: The writer of this work of fiction does not accept responsibility for physical or emotional maladies that these stories might cause to readers. When you laugh so much that your face hurts, or when you fall off your chair of laughter, or even when you laugh yourself to death, the author of these stories will not pay the bills of your medical service. No animals were hurt in this book: no chicken or sparrow or mocking jay, not one of the three little pigs, not that bird that cleans and cooks in "50 Shades of Snow White", not even the Dragon in the story "How To Kill A Dragon".

Book Fela

  • Author : Michael Veal
  • Publisher : Temple University Press
  • Release : 2000-05-17

Download or read book Fela written by Michael Veal and published by Temple University Press. This book was released on 2000-05-17 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Musician, political critic, and hedonist, international superstar Fela Anikulapo-Kuti created a sensation throughout his career. In his own country of Nigeria he was simultaneously adulated and loathed, often by the same people at the same time. His outspoken political views and advocacy of marijuana smoking and sexual promiscuity offended many, even as his musical brilliance enthralled them. In his creation of afrobeat, he melded African traditions with African American and Afro-Caribbean influences to revolutionize world music. Although harassed, beaten, and jailed by Nigerian authorities, he continued his outspoken and derisive criticism of political corruption at home and economic exploitation from abroad. A volatile mixture of personal characteristics -- charisma, musical talent, maverick lifestyle, populist ideology, and persistence in the face of persecution -- made him a legend throughout Africa and the world. Celebrated during the 1970s as a musical innovator and spokesman for the continent's oppressed masses, he enjoyed worldwide celebrity during the 1980s and was recognized in the 1990s as a major pioneer and elder statesman of African music. By the time of his death in 1997 from AIDS-related complications, Fela had become something of a Nigerian institution. In Africa, the idea of transnational alliance, once thought to be outmoded, has gained new currency. In African America, during a period of increasing social conservatism and ethnic polarization, Africa has re-emerged as a symbol of cultural affirmation. At such an historical moment, Fela's music offers a perspective on race, class, and nation on both sides of the Atlantic. As Professor Veal demonstrates, over three decades Fela synthesized a unique musical language while also clearing -- if only temporarily -- a space for popular political dissent and a type of counter-cultural expression rarely seen in West Africa. In the midst of political turmoil in Africa, as well as renewal of pro-African cultural nationalism throughout the diaspora, Fela's political music functions as a post-colonial art form that uses cross-cultural exchange to voice a unique and powerful African essentialism.
