Book The Little Red Schoolhouse

Download or read book The Little Red Schoolhouse written by Eric Sloane and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: School days, like our everydays, have changed. But the obsolete world of the one-room schoolhouse filled with rough-hewn desks still lingers. The echoes of yesteryear live on in the old-fashioned classrooms that still stand today. Harkening back to a time when the three Rs actually stood for reading, 'riting, and religion, Eric Sloane's sketchbook explores the history and spirit of early American schools. In this vivid slice of Americana, he tells of when paper was a precious commodity, explains the origins of words such as "blackboard" and "moonlighting," and offers evocative illustrations of New England's eighteenth- and nineteenth-century schoolhouses and their delightfully modest interiors. Filled with insight, warmth, and honest nostalgia, "The Little Red Schoolhouse" is an enchanting journey into a bygone past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I don't believe that you'd care a cent if she did marry a Dutchman! She might as well as to marry some white folks I know. Samuel Anderson made no reply. It would be of no use to reply. Shrews are tamed only by silence. Anderson had long since learned that the little shred of influence which remained to him in his own house would disappear whenever his teeth were no longer able to shut his tongue securely in. So now, when his wife poured out this hot lava of argumentum ad hominem, he closed the teeth down in a dead-lock way over the tongue, and compressed the lips tightly over the teeth, and shut his finger-nails into his work-hardened palms. And then, distrusting all these precautions, fearing lest he should be unable to hold on to his temper even with this grip, the little man strode out of the house with his wife's shrill voice in his ears.

Book excerpt: Warrington Township, located in Bucks County, was officially established in October 1734 and named after a town near Lancashire, England. As the years went on, main roads developed through town, some as part of William Penns highway plan, and the township was divided further into the four villages of Warrington, Neshaminy, Tradesville, and Eureka. Their borders were not well defined but were centered on important crossroads. Each of the villages had its own post office and school. The residents associated themselves with their villages, forming distinct communities. The year 2009 marks Warringtons 275th anniversary. To commemorate this event, the newly formed Warrington Historical Society has assembled the vintage photographs in Warrington as a glance back at the townships rich past, offering a window to a time when the Warrington landscape was made up of endless open space and agriculture was the main industry.

Book Repainting the Little Red Schoolhouse

Download or read book Repainting the Little Red Schoolhouse written by John Rodden and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2002 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first-ever English-language study of GDR education and the first book, in any language, to trace the complete history of Eastern German education from 1945 through the 1990s. It relates in full the GDR's attempt to create a new Marxist nation by means of educational reform. The book goes beyond previous investigations of the subject to include topics outside the scope of education per se; Rodden looks not only at the changing institution of education but also at what the Germans call Bildung--the formation of character and the cultivation of body and spirit. The book's sociological reach likewise extends to questions of nation-building, as Rodden carries his historical narrative up to the present environment of post-unification Germany.
