Book Spiral Galaxies in the Near IR

Download or read book Spiral Galaxies in the Near IR written by Dante Minniti and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From June 7-9, 1995, the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and the Max Plank Institut fiir Astrophysik (MPA) jointly held the Workshop on Spiral Galaxies in the Near-IR. This meeting took place at the ESO headquarters in Garching bei Miinchen, Germany. The weather waschanging, with the biergarten closed, but that did not stop 85 people from allover the world from attending the meeting. The three days were intensive, with talks and coffee and posters from 9 am to 6 pm, and very productive indeed for everyone. The topics covered the stellar populations of the Milky Way and other more distant spirals, the role of dust, the dynamics of spiral galaxies, and the nuclear activity seen at near-IR wavelengths. This volume presents the original contributions from the participants, including several papers that review the state-of-the-art knowledge in these various subjects. The editors would like to thank first and foremost Christina Stoffer, for she took care of everything. The meeting would not have been so successful without her expertise and efficiency. We are deeply indebted to the directors of MPA and ESO Science, Simon White and Jacqueline Bergeron, for their support and encouragement. We would also like to thank the other members of the scientific organizing committee: R. Genzel, K. Freeman, A. Moorwood, S. White, M. Rieke and E. Athannasoula, for their advice with the organization of the program. We also thank G. Rieke, R. Genzel, L. Athannasoula, A. Renzini and R.

Book Cosmic Pinwheels Spiral Galaxies And The Universe

Download or read book Cosmic Pinwheels Spiral Galaxies And The Universe written by Ronald J Buta and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2020-10-29 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'It is strongly biased towards the author's speciality of galaxy morphology, and particularly to bars and rings. To be fair, these are often given fairly short shrift in other textbooks, so this is a useful source of detail on such topics from an expert. In addition, references to original technical papers are given throughout which makes the book a handy introduction to the literature (which students may well find useful).'The Observatory MagazineThe main goal of the book is to introduce the reader to the world of spiral galaxies, how spirals were discovered, what they represent from a physical point of view, and what people have learned about the universe and the nature of galaxies in general from the study of spirals. Topics include early discoveries of nebulae, the island universe concept, the structure of spirals as seen both visually with telescopes and in images obtained with different filters, the role of spirals in the discovery of interstellar dust and dark matter, the different kinds of spiral galaxies and the importance of bars and rings, how different non-spiral galaxy types such as elliptical galaxies and S0 galaxies connect to spirals, and how spirals have contributed to our understanding of star formation and evolution, galaxy formation and evolution, the cosmological distance scale, and the universal expansion. The Milky Way as a spiral galaxy is also discussed. The book is profusely illustrated and not only a discourse on the spirals, but is also a personal reminiscence based on the author's studies of spiral galaxies over the past 45 years.

Book Field Identification Guide to the Sharks and Rays of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden

Download or read book Field Identification Guide to the Sharks and Rays of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden written by Ramón Bonfil and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2004 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a fully illustrated field guide for the identification of the sharks and rays most relevant to the fisheries of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. An extensive literature review and two field surveys in the region were carried out for the preparation of this document. A total of 49 sharks and 45 batoids reliably reported for the region are listed and those common in the fisheries or likely to be found through fisheries operations are fully treated. The guide includes sections on technical terms and measurements for sharks and batoids, and fully illustrated keys to those orders and families that occur in the region. Color plates for a large number of the species are included.

Book The Starburst AGN Connection

Download or read book The Starburst AGN Connection written by Weimin Wang and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starburst and AGN, which are among the most active extragalactic phenomena, have been studied independently for many years. Recent observations reveal that many galaxies exhibit both AGN and starburst features, which naturally invites an investigation of their physical connection. Considerable new multi-wavelength observations during the last decade together with the results of many theoretical studies are enabling the physics and connectedness of these two phenomena to be understood more deeply. These proceedings are of a conference held at Shanghai Normal University, on a very pleasant campus southwest of the city. More than 120 participants from over 20 different countries were in attendance. The goals of the conference were to review past progress, present new results, plan future work, and establish observational and theoretical collaborations. We were treated to the first in-depth presentation of Spitzer Space Telescope mid- IR spectroscopy and imaging/photometry as well as new detailed theoretical modeling of the relationship and interaction between starbursts and AGN. Also presented were major new studies of the local universe from SDSS and other ground-based radio, IR/optical, and space-based x-ray observatories. The importance of the intense starburst and AGN activity in the early universe only 1 billion years after the Big Bang is becoming evident from the very early formation of extremely massive galaxies and black holes. The coming together and cross-fertilization of these studies at the conference was most productive.
