Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Owing to the lack of weight and years of some of the members of the lst XV it was deemed advisable to withdraw from the League this year and concentrate on school rugby. The first XV enjoyed a very successful season, losing only three of the eleven games played. Two of these defeats were by two - point margins and one by a four - point margin. The team was a well - balanced one and played well together. The forwards lacked dash at the beginning of the season, but improved tremendously and developed into a fine hustling pack. The backs were fairly sound in defence, but lacked the ability to finish off their attacks. Northrop captained the side well and was given good support by Hess. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Black and Red, Vol. 3: March 1913 This was the second match of the League, and if ever one wanted evidence that the University School XV. (or their opponents, fora matter of that) were keen on football, it was forthcoming that day. It was pelting with rain and the ground was nothing but mud and water. The Law Students had not forgotten their previous defeat and they certainly made a great effort to avenge it, and it was only the persistent doggedness of the School forwards, coupled by the number of free kicks that the Students had awarded against them for minor offences such as offside, that the University was able to score in the last quarter of an hour. Book Pitching in a Pinch

Book excerpt: An inside baseball memoir from the game’s first superstar, with a foreword by Chad Harbach Christy Mathewson was one of the most dominant pitchers ever to play baseball. Posthumously inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame as one of the “Five Immortals,” he was an unstoppable force on the mound, winning at least twenty-two games for twelve straight seasons and pitching three complete-game shutouts in the 1905 World Series. Pitching in a Pinch, his witty and digestible book of baseball insights, stories, and wisdom, was first published over a hundred years ago and presents readers with Mathewson’s plainspoken perspective on the diamond of yore—on the players, the chances they took, the jinxes they believed in, and, most of all, their love of the game. Baseball fans will love to read first-hand accounts of the infamous Merkle’s Boner incident, Giants manager John McGraw, and the unstoppable Johnny Evers and to learn how much—and just how little—has really changed in a hundred years.
