Book The Red Book of the Exchequer Vol 3 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Red Book of the Exchequer Vol 3 Classic Reprint written by Hubert Hall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-02 with total page 708 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Red Book of the Exchequer, Vol. 3 Establishment, which had endured for nearly seven centuries, shorn of the excrescences with which it had been encumbered during the Stuart period. Whether this Establishment is as old as the Conquest itself, or whether it took its sh ape in even earlier times, is a question which can scarcely be decided, for want of sufficient evidence. Considerable light is, however, thrown on the subject by the Constitution of the King's House preserved in the earlier portion of the Red Book. This remarkable document is also entered in the small Black Book of the same Court. There is no mention of the date of its composition in either ms., and it has been commonly assigned to the time of Henry II., although it is actually dated in the reign of Henry I. By the scribe who copied it into the Red Book of the Exchequer.1 Mr. Stapleton, however, clearly proved long since that this Establishment refers to the reign of Henry I., and he also attempted to prove that it applies exclusively to the Ducal household of N or mandy.2 This view of the matter has never yet been challenged, but the great importance of its bearing on the doubtful origin of certain fiscal and judicial institu tions has perhaps scarcely been sufficiently realised. This recorded existence of a Roman Establishment bearing unmistakable traces of a considerable antiquity at this early date, would almost seem to justify the derivation of the English Curia and Exchequer from a foreign source, according to the positive statement of the author of the Dialogue. Strange to say, this important evidence has been actually used in support of the oppo site theory of a native origin of the above institutions. Book View Of The State Of Europe During The Middle Ages Volume 3 The Ecclesiastical History of Europe and the Constitutional History of England

Download or read book View Of The State Of Europe During The Middle Ages Volume 3 The Ecclesiastical History of Europe and the Constitutional History of England written by Henry Hallam and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2024-04-25 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Middle Ages is described by Hallam himself as a series of historical dissertations, a comprehensive survey of the chief circumstances that can interest a philosophical inquirer during the period from the 5th to the 15th century. The work consists of nine long chapters, each of which is a complete treatise in itself. The history of France, of Italy, of Spain, of Germany, and of the Greek and Saracenic empires, sketched in rapid and general terms, is the subject of five separate chapters. Others deal with the great institutional features of medieval society—the development of the feudal system, of the ecclesiastical system, and of the free political system of England. The last chapter sketches the general state of society, the growth of commerce, manners, and literature in the middle ages. The book may be regarded as a general view of early modern history, preparatory to the more detailed treatment of special lines of inquiry carried out in his subsequent works, although Hallam's original intention was to continue the work on the scale on which it had been begun. This is volume three out of three dealing with the ecclesiastical history of Europe and the constitutional history of England.

Book The Cambridge Anthology of British Medieval Latin Volume 2 1066 1500

Download or read book The Cambridge Anthology of British Medieval Latin Volume 2 1066 1500 written by Carolinne White and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2024-01-31 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology presents in two volumes a series of Latin texts (with English translation) produced in Britain during the period AD 450-1500. Excerpts are taken from Bede and other historians, from the letters of women written from their monasteries, from famous documents such as Domesday Book and Magna Carta, and from accounts and legal documents, all revealing the lives of individuals at home and on their travels across Britain and beyond. It offers an insight into Latin writings on many subjects, showing the important role of Latin in the multilingual society of medieval Britain, in which Latin was the primary language of written communication and record and also developed, particularly after the Norman Conquest, through mutual influence with English and French. The thorough introductions to each volume provide a broad overview of the linguistic and cultural background, while the individual texts are placed in their social, historical and linguistic context.

Book Ships Shawls and Loyal Service

Download or read book Ships Shawls and Loyal Service written by David Blakely and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ships, Shawls and Loyal Service details the history of three 19th century brothers, each of whom saw some success in his chosen occupation, but each quite distinct from the others in what he achieved. Inspired by the extensive family tree drawn up in the early 20th century by one of his great-uncles, David Blakely relates the stories of his three ancestors. With strong roots in rural Suffolk, the three Blakely brothers were born at the end of the 18th century into a long-established family. Their ancestors had been gentlemen farmers, but none of the brothers followed that occupation. The eldest spent a year as a midshipman in the Royal Navy and six years as an officer in the Army, before becoming involved in a rural church community in north Norfolk. The second served as an officer on East India Company ships, sailing to India and China and finally being promoted to captain. The youngest brother lived in Norwich and became a well-respected retailer and manufacturer in the textile trade. Ships, Shawls and Loyal Service is a fascinating insight into the lives of three brothers, each of whom took a very different path in life. Early history of the brothers’ family is also explored, including their grandfather’s business as proprietor of a stage-coach company in Ipswich and his acquaintance with the artist Thomas Gainsborough. This book will appeal to those interested in East Anglian life and trade in the 18th and 19th centuries. Readers interested in naval and military actions in Napoleonic times and in sailing between England and the Far East will also find this a valuable account.
