Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 8: July, 1934 Moreover, many a boy who accepts a bid and joins a fraternity is not financially able to do so, and yet attaches such importance to being a fraternity man that he feels that he cannot decline. The result is that he either puts an additional burden on his parents, who may be making a great effort to give him an education, or else he leaves college in debt to his fraternity, thus impairing his sense of Obligation and putting an additional charge on those who do pay their dues and contribute their part to the social demands made on the chapter. What would seem to be of greater importance to the fraternity itself is the fact that a number Of boys whose breeding, ability, and promise would make them most desirable and congenial fraternity men and reflect credit on the fraternity, have to decline because they cannot afford the cost. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 8: October 1933 Those in charge of the arrangements have wisely chosen as the date for the celebration the twenty-seventh and twenty-eighth of October, which falls at the same time as home-coming Day and, in this way, there will be even a greater inducement for former members to return. The Alumni of the Chapter will have the opportunity not only to meet their brothers of college days but will in this way have an occasion to foregather with other college mates attracted by the Home Coming. After fifty years, the Chapter to-day is possibly more flourishing than at any time in its long history, having in its membership a number of campus leaders and excellent students. The record extends its congratulations to the Chapter and a welcome to returning Alumni and other guests and bespeaks for the occasion an event full of enjoyment and one that will be long remembered in the annals of Upsilon Chapter and the College itself. Wallace Blanton, of Richmond, and while much was confidently expected of him, the result surpassed those expectations. Approximately has been secured in cash or pledges coming from about 800 contributors as against something in excess of from 850 contributors last year.
