Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 4: October 1, 1929 The necessary sum not having been raised by July Ist last, the time has been extended and a vigorous and intensive campaign will go on until the first of January, 1930. There is a faithful group of Alumni who, besides giving all they could afford to give, are freely giving their time to the cause. Will not those who have thus far failed to respond come, not only to the aid of the College, but to the assistance of this gallant band who are both working and giving? Surely the incentive should be great enough for any son of the College - that of having a part in putting one Of the Oldest, most useful and most honored of institutions in the country beyond the possibility of want and where it can go forward with ever - increasing usefulness to the state and to the nation. We feel confident that no loyal son who would pause to think will let SO great an Opportunity for service go unheeded. These were the days when the radio had not been dreamed of and even the phonograph was far from perfected. A journey even from Farmville to hampden-sydney usually took from one to one and one-half hours except when the roads were especially good and the team unusual. It was not uncommon to see booths placed in the grounds near the church where food could be obtained for those who had driven in only for the day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 39: April, 1965 Hampden - Sydney is not so well known nationally as some of us would like to think. One way to achieve a national reputation is to get a basketball team like Davidson's. Another way, Of course, is by outstanding quality of education. Again, the more students from other states, the wider will be a college's area Of influence and the greater its national reputation. Of course, that works the other way, too. The better known a college is, the more students from other states will want to attend it. Private colleges are not under some Of the limiting pressures Of public institutions. We hope Hampden Sydney will be able to extend its influence wider and wider, for it has something good to give. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 33: January 1959 In Paul Leicester Ford's edition Of The Works of Thomas Jefferson (volume VI, page 23) there may be found a letter containing the following intriguing words: Mr. Henry at the present session made an unsuccessful attempt to get a portion of the revenues of Wm. Mary transferred to hampden-sydney. The letter dated December 14, 1789, and addressed to William Short, shows to what lengths the early trustees went in order to insure the stability of the youthful institution! Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 9: July, 1915 In fact, the condition of the gift is that the college will make this addition to the building. The library at present contains some thirty thousand volumes and pamphlets, many of. Them being of great value, but the great need is for other books which will supply the material needed for research work. The library is used more and more each year, from the beginning of the session to the close. A visitor during library hours will be astonished to see the great number of students working there. Some are there for the purpose of looking up assignments made by the professors, others for the independent preparation of speeches or articles for the various college publications. Still others use the library more or less as a study hall. Nothing is more greatly needed than better library facilities. One of the reasons which has prevented the college from being on the accredited list of American Universities and Colleges has been due to the fact that these facilities at hampden-sydney have not met the standard required by the Association. The hours which the library will be kept open will also be increased. It is believed that with this addition to the building, and after the purchase of these volumes, made possible by the gift of from the General Education Board, this particular disability will be removed.
