Dr. Robert again characterized the alumni as evidence of the past and promise of the future, and hoped that the present occasion might be repeated many times over. Nor does he overlook the spanish-american War, though that lasted only a few months. Of course he has a good deal to say about the first World War and World War II, and the Korean conflict. Mr. Bradshaw draws an excellent picture of the social life in the county and he deals also with the political and educational. In the educational field he naturally has a great deal to say about hampden-sydney during its early days, as it pertains to the historical record of the county which he traces from its foundations, down to the present. His treatment of Longwood College is most complete and comprehensive, showing that Prince Edward did not neglect the education of its young women. He also mentions a number Of private schools which played an important part in the education of the young women of Prince Edward. Mary transferred to hampden-sydney. The letter dated December 14, 1789, and addressed to William Short, shows to what lengths the early trustees went in order to insure the stability of the youthful institution! Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 8: July, 1934 Moreover, many a boy who accepts a bid and joins a fraternity is not financially able to do so, and yet attaches such importance to being a fraternity man that he feels that he cannot decline. The result is that he either puts an additional burden on his parents, who may be making a great effort to give him an education, or else he leaves college in debt to his fraternity, thus impairing his sense of obligation and putting an additional charge on those who do pay their dues and contribute their part to the social demands made on the chapter. What would seem to be of greater importance to the fraternity itself is the fact that a number of boys whose breeding, ability, and promise would make them most desirable and congenial fraternity men and reflect credit on the fraternity, have to decline because they cannot afford the cost. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 3: April 1, 1929 One of the first matters to be decided by the Board of Trustees and the Executive Committee of the campaign was the form of the appeal. It has been felt that the appeal of the College for support is not alone to the Presbyterian Church but to the South generally, and to the State of Virginia in particular. Therefore, in the literature prepared, particular emphasis has been laid upon the service which the College has rendered the nation and the State, besides the quality of men She has given to education, to the church, to medicine and the law. By putting the appeal on this broad basis it is hoped to interest the widest possible field. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-01-07 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 9: October, 1934 The Chesters were Puritans of New England, people of strong bodies, vigorous minds and marked Spiritual gifts. The Chapters dealing with Dr. Chester's early life at Mount Holly, Arkansas, where he was born in 1851, present a vivid picture of the pioneer days in that state when there were few luxuries and life was strenuous; slavery as it existed then is shown at its best; war incidents are related, and the trials of Reconstruction days are referred to in a calm and impartial manner. College life at Washington College (lexington, Vir ginia) is portrayed' and the young student's association with General Robert E. Lee and his family is set forth in a most interesting way. Then hampden-sydney, as it was in the early seventies, receives the attention it deserves. The great worthies of the Seminary faculty are mentioned and just estimates of them are made. To the readers of the record this portion of the book will probably be most interesting. Even Walker Crawley is not forgotten, though the reference to this unique person is brief and not perhaps as laudatory as Walker would have wished it to be. It Should be stated, however, that the names of Hampden Sydney men are found all through the volume; for the contribution of the College to the work of missions has been great, and the Secretary came in contact with many of them.
