Murad Akhundov combines a technical proficiency in science with a deep interest and understanding of the cultural and historical background of scientific concepts. He uses these disparate points of view and his broad knowledge of both Western and Soviet scholarship to shed new light on the classical problem of the sources, evolution, and current directions of human conceptions of space and time. The book is in three parts. The first, on stages of cultural and individual development, applies anthropology and psychology in its analysis. The second, on the evolution of philosophical conceptions, draws on the history of philosophy. The third, on modern physical notions, uses mathematics, physics, and philosophy of science. This interdisciplinary approach allows the author to suggest insightful parallels and contrasts between psychological and social perceptions of space and time and those of science. The book concludes with an intriguing suggestion that this approach might be applied to the search for a unified field theory in contemporary physics. Murad Akhundov was born in Baku, Azerbaidzhan, which was until relatively recently a center of the Zoroastrian religion. This background is reflected in the book's discussions of mythology and religion. Akhundov was educated in Moscow and is now on the staff of the Institute of Philosophy of the Soviet Academy of Sciences.

Book excerpt: This is a new publication of Hermann Weyl's book Space-Time-Matter, which was first published in German in 1919 and the English translation was published in 1922.What makes Weyl's book invaluable is that, in addition to his masterfully presented lectures on special and general relativity (starting with a helpful introduction to tensor analysis), he was the first (and essentially the only one so far) who tried to reconcile two seemingly unreconcilable facts - Minkowski's discovery (deduced from the failed experiments to detect absolute motion) of the spacetime structure of the world (that it is a static four-dimensional world containing en bloc the entire history of the perceived by us three-dimensional world) and the inter-subjective fact that we are aware of ourselves and the world only at one single moment of time - the present moment (the moment now) - which constantly changes. Weyl reached the conclusion that it is our consciousness (somehow "traveling" in the four-dimensional world along our worldlines) which creates our feeling that time flows. Unfortunately, Weyl's reconciliation of the above facts has not been rigorously examined so far; the apparent contradiction that the consciousness "travels" in the "frozen" four-dimensional world - spacetime - is not an excuse because Weyl had surely been aware of it and nevertheless "went public" with his proposed resolution.

There is a relation to Augmented and Mixed Reality (AR/MR), Computer-Supported Collaborative Work (CSCW), Computer-Aided industrial/architectural Design (CAD), modeling of the real-world (e.g. computer games, scenes/effects in movies), entertainment (e.g. 3D TV/Video) and recognition/analyzing of real-world characteristics by computer systems and robots. There exists a powerful algorithm theory for shape reconstruction from arbitrary viewpoints, called shape from photo-consistency. However, it is computationally expensive and hence can not be used with applications in the field of 3D video or CSCW as well as interactive 3D model creation. Attempts have been made to achieve real-time framerates using PC cluster systems. While these provide enough performance they are also expensive and less flexible. Approaches that use GPU hardware-acceleration on single workstations achieve interactive framerates for novel-view synthesis, but do not provide an explicit volumetric representation of the whole scene. The proposed approach shows the efforts in developing a GPU hardware-accelerated framework for obtaining the volumetric photo hull of a dynamic 3D scene as seen from multiple calibrated cameras. High performance is achieved by employing a shape from silhouette technique in advance to obtain a tight initial volume for shape from photo-consistency. Also several speed-up techniques are presented to increase efficiency. Since the entire processing is done on a single PC, the framework can be applied to mobile setups, enabling a wide range of further applications. The approach is explained using programmable vertex and fragment processors and compared to highly optimized CPU implementations. It is shown that the new approach can outperform the latter by more than one magnitude. The thesis is organized as follows: Chapter 1 contains an introduction, giving an overview with classification of related techniques, statement of the main problem, novelty of the proposed approach and its fields of application. Chapter 2 surveys related work in the area of dynamic scene reconstruction by shape from silhouette and shape from photo-consistency.
