Book The Reconstruction of Religious Belief Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Reconstruction of Religious Belief Classic Reprint written by W. H. Mallock and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reconstruction of Religious Belief In two volumes which I have published during the last four years, I have in different ways attempted the same two things - firstly, to show the futility of the methods employed by the religious thinkers of to-day in their attempt to liberate religion from the negative conclusions of science; and, secondly, to point out, or rather suggest, the outlines of a method which, for this purpose, is likely to prove more profitable. In Religion as a Credible Doctrine, the treatment was purely argumentative. In The Veil of the Temple the questions dealt with were exhibited in their relation to the life of every day, and the interests and characters of people who are anything but professed thinkers; but in both of the volumes the negative position was dealt with at greater length than the positive. In the present volume these proportions are reversed. It begins, indeed, with a short summary which exhibits the strength of the negative arguments, but the larger part is occupied with the attempted work of construction. This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: Ill THE PHILOSOPHICAL ATTACK ON SCIENCE What I shall try to make plain to the reader, in this and the two following chapters, is that the philosophical attack on the more extreme claims of science fails, as at present conducted, even more completely than the clerical, though it fails for a different reason. The clerical arguments fail because science repels and shatters them. The philosophical arguments, on the contrary, fail because science absorbs them, consolidating its position by means of what was meant to destroy it. The nature of this result, which will have to be described in detail, can be made generally intelligible by a simple and familiar illustration of it. I refer to the attack on science on the ground that it is a system of materialism. Let us first remark, then, that the time-honored word materialism has two senses, which unluckily are often confounded. It may mean either a certain conception of what matter is, or it may mean the doctrine that matter, as thus conceived, is everything. The conception of matter in question is one which, for ordinary purposes, is the working conception of every one. It is shared by the sublimest idealist with the drunkard at the street corner. It is a conception of matter as a something possessing in its own substance all the qualities by which we ourselves know it, such as color, smell, hardness, softness, and so forth?a something which is the very type of the homely, the non-mysterious, the understandable?a something about which in most of its forms we all of us know everything; and of the things known about it, one of the most obvious is the fact that it possesses in itself nothing like life or mind. Naturally, then, a man, whatever his scientific qualifications, who started with matter as conceived of in this popular w...

Book The Reconstruction of Religion

Download or read book The Reconstruction of Religion written by Charles A. Ellwood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reconstruction of Religion: A Sociological View One of the greatest social needs of the present is a re ligion adapted to the requirements of modern life and in harmony with modern science. 1 Since the beginning of the Great War a number of the most dispassionate and detached thinkers of our time have expressed the same general idea. Two eminent British sociologists have re cently expressed themselves thus: We are compelled to the admission (one hard for the student, the man of pure or applied science), that the essential problem of life is not material, but psychical. In a word, life needs to be eupsychic; or in an older word, religious. 2 In May, 1916, Mr. Gr. Lowes Dickinson said in a private conver sation with the author, If I should guess, I would say that the great need of the world, just at present, is more religion. Of course, I mean religion of the right sort; of religion of a certain sort there is a plenty, but not enough of the right sort. 3 Again, in March, 1915, the author had the pleasure of visiting with Mr. Frederic Harrison, the veteran leader of the English Positivists. Mr. Harrison forcefully expressed the opinion that the Great War was due to the decadence of ethical religion, and that the problem of world peace and order would never be settled until the religious question was settled. Download or read book Religious Reconstruction Classic Reprint written by M. J. Savage and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Reconstruction Believing, as I do, that religion is a permanent and the supreme interest of man, I also believe that the thoughts of men are widened with the process of the suns. People wish to be religious, but it is becoming more and more true that they are not willing to pay so high a price as their brains for what passes current under the name of religion. Along with the growth of knowledge, then, concerning the universe, God and man, there must go a parallel readjustment of the thought-side of the relig ious life. And this means only that God is the God of truth as well as of devoutness. He, then, shows the deepest faith in God who fearlessly faces the truth, and lets it build the temple in which he will worship. And one who presumes to undertake the smallest portion of it must needs approach his task with humility and reverence Yet if, in the full maturity of life and experience, he is convinced that revision is required, and believes he sees where and how it may be made, it would be shameful in him and disloyal to posterity not to speak. Download or read book Byways of Belief Classic Reprint written by Conrad Noel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Byways of Belief If the search for truth be the supreme object of the Christian Religion, there is, of course, no inaccuracy in Mr Lloyd Thomas's analogy with the doctrine of evolution and the British Association. But Catholics would altogether deny that the Church was built as a Society for spiritual research. It was surely built to promulgate truth and to band men together as comrades in arms. Similes are dangerous things, but the metaphor of an army is much more fitting to the idea of the Church than the metaphor of a hunting party in doubt as to the quarry it hunts. It is not a common search but a common find that unites us. This is not to be taken as meaning that the Catholics of any particular age are to pride themselves on the possession of the whole truth, but the very object of their being banded together is that they may teach and live that truth which they do possess, and that, by living it, truth may be added to them in greater measure. The search for truth has been denied by Church ofificialdom, and its advocates have exalted it out of due proportion into the first essential of a Christian Church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Grammar of Belief: A Revaluation of the Bases of Christian Belief in the Light of Modern Science and Philosophy When a boy goes to college, what happens to his interest in religion? Well, in the first place, he certainly doesn't lose it. No one who has sat before an open fire with a circle of college men and heard the discussion range through all things in heaven above and in the earth beneath and in the waters under the earth, can doubt their interest in religion. That is precisely why so many of them become agnostic. If they didn't care, they might go on repeating with thoughtless lips old platitudes, without ever wondering whether the new learning was going to fit them. It is because they do care enough about religion to require that it shall be true, that they turn from it when it seems to be discredited. Generally, the young man, and the young woman, too, comes to college with no adequate idea of religious doctrine. He has probably never concerned himself about it. If he has thought to inquire, the chances are that he has been answered after the manner of half a century ago. For most people seem to think that old ideas, like old clothing, are good enough for boys. When he gets to college he learns that the world was not made in seven days, and that his great grandfather resembled an ape, and that Moses did not write the first five books of the Bible. The professor hasn't time to explain to him that God can work as well in a million years as in seven days, and that a man's ancestors are not nearly so important to him as his descendants, and that you don't have to know the author of a book to tell whether or not it is worth while. The college man sees theology, - the old theology, - forever on the defensive with science, and forever losing ground. Thinks he, if religion is real, why remain on the defensive?
