Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2000 in the subject Social Pedagogy / Social Work, Glasgow Caledonian University, language: English, abstract: In November 1999 the Sunday Mail ran a story Orkney in new kid-sex scandal. Within the article, the social workers at Orkney were accused of doing nothing because the mother thought that the Orkney inquiry in 1992 damaged them so much they were happier pretending this was not happening. Furthermore, an 'unnamed insider' stated "it's true that sex abuse allegations are handled with kid gloves within the department. It's only natural after what happened here before." The purpose of this study is to explore the recent history of child protection in Scotland and the impact of intra-familiar child abuse inquiries on today's child protection work. The main question hereby is: Are children more at risk? Crystallisation was used as a general research methodology to obtain a wide range of information and to increase the validity of results. The data was derived from social work sources - interviews with two senior social work managers of two local authorities in the West of Scotland as well as a child protection trainer and questionnaires presented to child protection trainers and 32 students of two West of Scotland cohorts currently undertaking a post-qualifying child protection programme. The study was carried out between February and April 2000 and examined the perceptions and attitudes of child protection workers and how recent inquiries into child abuse have influenced today's protection work and policy. It was found that there has been both a positive and a negative impact on child protection work. All agreed that the partnership approach with parents and children and the inter-agency approach are important for good practice within child protection work. However, most of the respondents felt also a negative impact of the inquiries not necessarily on practice but on the social work profession itself. Furthermore, most agreed th

Book Safeguarding and Protecting Children and Young People

Download or read book Safeguarding and Protecting Children and Young People written by Anne Stafford and published by Dunedin Academic PressLtd. This book was released on 2008 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book surveys key developments and shifts in child protection policy and systems in Scotland, from 1968 to the present. Focusing mainly on the recent period of rapid reform since 2003, these changes are examined in the context of earlier developments in systems to protect children. This wider historical perspective has enabled the contributors to produce a clear understanding of the content and direction of developments in child protection. Where relevant, comparison is made with changes in child protection policy and practice in England and elsewhere. The book discusses the impact of the major Scottish legislation including the introduction of the Children's Hearing System. It assesses the role major inquiries into child deaths have played in shaping policy. It also examines the effectiveness of recent arrangements designed to keep children safe from adults who may pose a danger to them in the community. Current policy in this area focuses on meeting the needs of all children as a way of also addressing the needs of those deemed to be at most risk. The book concludes by considering what these developments might mean for the protection of children and young people who have been abused or are at risk of abuse in future. Safeguarding and Protecting Children and Young People is essential reading for those studying in the areas of health, child welfare and childhood studies, education, and social policy.~

Book Beyond the Rhetoric

Download or read book Beyond the Rhetoric written by Helen Buckley and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Official knowledge about child abuse and child protection in Ireland tends to emanate from formal guidance, policy reports and, more recently, child abuse inquiries. This thesis, one of the few empirical studies on this subject to be carried out in Ireland, sets out to question the validity of assumptions which underpin the child protection discourse. Using a qualitative approach, it seeks to represent the voices of stakeholders and actors in the child protection network, contextualised in their social worlds. Dilemmas and contradictions which frequently determine the course of child protection work are made visible in the study, which explicates the sense-making activities employed daily by social workers and other practitioners to deal with the uncertainties and conflicts inherent in their professional task. The limitations imposed on child protection work by the adoption of a narrow organisational framework are depicted, and the study also demonstrates the reluctance of professionals to either identify with a forensic role or to own responsibility for what essentially emerges as the 'dirty' work of child protection. The negative and dangerous impact on children and families of serious and intractable disagreements between practitioners, reflective of differing professional identities, statuses and paradigms, are clearly illustrated. The experiences of parents, as objects of investigation and as consumers of the services, are explored. In the process, the level to which their perspectives coincide with those of the professionals, and the degree to which they shape the outcome of their 'cases', are highlighted. In conclusion, this thesis argues, that far from being a straightforward and easily defined operation, the work of child protection is replete with contradictions, ideological dilemmas and dynamic elements. It is subject at every stage to covert influences which, though they have a profound effect on the outcome for families and children, are rarely reflected in the official discourse.

Book Joint Investigation in Child Protection

Download or read book Joint Investigation in Child Protection written by Liz Davies and published by . This book was released on 2008-11-25 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual is designed for training police officers and social workers who have responsibilities to work together to safeguard and protect children, as well as those professionals whose work is linked to the UK's Local Safeguarding Children Boards (such as healthcare workers, teachers and education staff, probation officers, and religious leaders). Primarily addressing the joint training of specialist police officers and social workers, Joint Investigation in Child Protection can also help those linked to safeguarding children to: understand and recognize what constitutes 'significant harm;' focus on the children involved; develop suitable investigative skills; and understand the roles of fellow professionals from other agencies and work effectively with, and if necessary, challenge them. Workers from a wide range of backgrounds, with varied levels of experience, can benefit from this training's approach to child-centered interviewing. The book challenges and goes beyond existing UK government guidance in ways that can significantly improve safeguarding and protecting children and young people. It follows English and Welsh statutory guidance, and is adaptable for use in Scotland and Northern Ireland. It is a rich and extensive resource, containing 23 presentations and 31 activities.

Book The Supervision of Child Protection Work

Download or read book The Supervision of Child Protection Work written by Janet Gadsby Waters and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is based upon a piece of qualitative research examining the traditional, formal supervision of social workers by team managers with regard to child protection work in Local Authority social services departments. It explores the supervisory process in practice and its value in terms of ensuring and facilitating effective and efficient practice in the child protection field. It illustrates that supervision is predominantly a managerially-oriented activity, rather than the required worker-centred activity through which the professional and personal needs of social workers can be met and practice quality maintained. The reasons for a managerial emphasis are explored, concluding that, within the present organisational structure and management philosophies of social services departments, this model of supervision is inadequate. Local authorities need to seriously consider professional and personal needs of workers, otherwise confident practice cannot be expected.
