This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Realms of the Egyptian Dead According to the Belief of the Ancient Egyptians In any attempt to form some concept of the world and human life, the question which has most keenly exercised both the peoples of antiquity and those of to-day is always the same: whence are the universe and its inhabitants, and whither does it all tend? In the following pages we shall consider the ideas developed in the Nile Valley respecting the issue of all things, and especially concerning the death of man, and that other world to which after death he hoped or feared to go. It must, in the first place, be noted that in Egyptian texts no indications of the existence of any myth predicting the final destruction of the world have hitherto been found. Whether no such myth existed and men in the Nile Valley were unable to imagine that this best of all worlds should one day no longer be, or whether the absence of such indications is the result of chance cannot now be decided. Book Death and the Afterlife in Ancient Egypt

Download or read book Death and the Afterlife in Ancient Egypt written by John H. Taylor and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2001-04 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of all the ancient peoples, the Egyptians are perhaps best known for the fascinating ways in which they grappled with the mysteries of death and the afterlife. This beautifully illustrated book draws on the British Museum's world-famous collection of mummies and other funerary evidence to offer an accessible account of Egyptian beliefs in an afterlife and examine the ways in which Egyptian society responded materially to the challenges these beliefs imposed. The author describes in detail the numerous provisions made for the dead and the intricate rituals carried out on their behalf. He considers embalming, coffins and sarcophagi, shabti figures, magic and ritual, and amulets and papyri, as well as the mummification of sacred animals, which were buried by the millions in vast labyrinthine catacombs. The text also reflects recent developments in the interpretation of Egyptian burial practices, and incorporates the results of much new scientific research. Newly acquired information derives from a range of sophisticated applications, such as the use of noninvasive imaging techniques to look inside the wrappings of a mummy, and the chemical analysis of materials used in the embalming process. Authoritative, concise, and lucidly written, Death and the Afterlife in Ancient Egypt illuminates aspects of this complex, vibrant culture that still perplex us more than 3,000 years later.

Book Egyptian Ideas of the Future Life

Download or read book Egyptian Ideas of the Future Life written by Sir Ernest Alfred Wallis Budge and published by . This book was released on 1900 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With frequent references to archeological finds, this book explores the ancient Egyptian concept of the afterlife. Author Ernest Alfred Wallis Budge was an English Egyptologist who worked for the British Museum. While Budge was not exempt from the darker side of Egyptology--he was complicit in the smuggling of antiquities, and by purchasing from dealers rather than engaging in excavation he helped encourage archeological looting--his tenure was marked by a decided increase in the quality of the museum's collection. Budge wrote this book using the full resources of the British Museum, and the resulting work offers an in-depth look at ancient Egyptian funerary practices.

Book Egyptian Book of the Dead and the Mysteries of Amenta

Download or read book Egyptian Book of the Dead and the Mysteries of Amenta written by Gerald Massey and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no death in the Osirian religion, only decay and change, and periodic renewal; only evolution and transformation in the domain of matter and the transubstantiation into spirit. In the so-called death of Osiris it is rebirth, not death, exactly the same as in the changes of external nature. At the close of the day the solar orb went down and left the sun god staring blankly in the dark of death. Taht the moon god met him in Amenta with the eye of Horus as the light the was to illuminate the darkness of the subterranean world. from Egyptian Book of the Dead and the Mysteries of Amenta It goes unappreciated by modern Egyptologists, but it is embraced by those who savor the concept of a hidden history of humanity, and those who approach all human knowledge from the perspective of the esoteric. Gerard Massey 's massive Ancient Egypt: The Light of the World first published in 1907 and the crowning achievement of the self-taught scholar redefines the roots of Christianity via Egypt, proposing that Egyptian mythology was the basis for Jewish and Christian beliefs. Here, Cosimo proudly presents Book 4 of Ancient Egypt, in which Massey discusses the Egyptian Book of the Dead as the pre-Christian word of God, and explores the idea that Amenta, the threshold to the Egyptian underworld, is the first overt expression of a human desire for a noncorporeal afterlife. Massey goes on to connect the mystery of the mummy to the mystery of the Christ by likening the Christian dogma of physical resurrection to the Egyptian impetus for mummification. Peculiar and profound, this work will intrigue and delight readers of history, religion, and mythology. British author GERALD MASSEY (1828 1907) published works of poetry, spiritualism, Shakespearean criticism, and theology, but his best-known works are in the realm of Egyptology, including A Book of the Beginnings and The Natural Genesis.
