Book The Realization of Telecommunications in High School Science Classrooms An Evaluation of Teachers Using Technology

This book was released on 1994 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past decade, researchers have studied a variety of ways in which telecommunication is used in K-12 classrooms. Many of these studies describe only a small number of our nation's teachers and classrooms. These studies have not looked at the impact technology has on teachers and students and have not addressed the issue of expanding the use of technology to more classrooms in a school district, state, or nation. This study combines two research methodologies, case study and survey research. The case study examined the use of telecommunications by twelve high school science teachers from five schools in a single Southern California school district and looked at how they implemented this new technology into their classrooms during the 1993-1994 school year. A survey examining the use of technology and telecommunications was sent to all high school science teachers in the same school district. A situated evaluation framework was used to examine what characteristics contribute to effective telecommunication use in the classroom, what conditions need to be present to sustain systemic change in its use, and what teachers think is a realistic expectation of implementing telecommunications across a school district. The findings suggest that although a few selected teachers have gone through extensive telecommunication training and the school district is in the process of building a telecommunication infrastructure, the use of telecommunications in high school science classrooms is in its infancy. While there is a positive outlook and administrative support concerning the implementation of telecommunications by the individuals involved, and constituencies are being formed outside the school system, it is still too soon to predict the success or failure of implementing this new technology across the school district.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education is a hot topic. From the stage of presidential debates to tonight's dinner table, it is an issue that most Americans are deeply concerned about. While there are many strategies for improving the educational process, we need a way to find out what works and what doesn't work as well. Educational assessment seeks to determine just how well students are learning and is an integral part of our quest for improved education. The nation is pinning greater expectations on educational assessment than ever before. We look to these assessment tools when documenting whether students and institutions are truly meeting education goals. But we must stop and ask a crucial question: What kind of assessment is most effective? At a time when traditional testing is subject to increasing criticism, research suggests that new, exciting approaches to assessment may be on the horizon. Advances in the sciences of how people learn and how to measure such learning offer the hope of developing new kinds of assessments-assessments that help students succeed in school by making as clear as possible the nature of their accomplishments and the progress of their learning. Knowing What Students Know essentially explains how expanding knowledge in the scientific fields of human learning and educational measurement can form the foundations of an improved approach to assessment. These advances suggest ways that the targets of assessment-what students know and how well they know it-as well as the methods used to make inferences about student learning can be made more valid and instructionally useful. Principles for designing and using these new kinds of assessments are presented, and examples are used to illustrate the principles. Implications for policy, practice, and research are also explored. With the promise of a productive research-based approach to assessment of student learning, Knowing What Students Know will be important to education administrators, assessment designers, teachers and teacher educators, and education advocates.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this hearing was to provide insight into the role of the Federal Government in supporting the development and implementation of the educational technology structure that is needed by elementary and secondary schools. It is argued that what is needed is a broad-based policy agreement about the role that educational technology can play in enhancing student achievement and curriculum development, changing the face of instruction in the classroom, and addressing the challenges of education in the 90s. A brief opening statement by Jeff Bingaman, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Technology and National Security, is followed by statements and, in some cases, submissions for the record, by the following witnesses: (1) Shelly Weinstein, President EDSAT Institute; (2) Jack D. Foster, Cabinet Secretary for Education and the Humanities, Kentucky (statement and report, "Analysis of a Proposal for an Education Satellite"); (3) Donald Ledwig, Corporation for Public Broadcasting (statement and report, "1991 Study of School Uses of Television Video"); (4) Henry J. Cauthen, America's Public Television Stations and South Carolina Educational Television Network; (5) Dennis D. Gooler, North Central Regional Educational Laboratory; (6) Daniel Schultz, Michigan Department of Education (statement and article, "An Inquiry-Centered Classroom of the Future"); (7) Cecilia Lenk, Massachusetts Corporation for Educational Telecommunications (statement and report "Reach for the Stars"); (8) Sally M. Johnstone, Western Cooperative for Educational Telecommunications (statement and article, "Research on Telecommunicated Learning: Past, Present and Future"); (9) Gregory J. Liptak, Mind Extension University; and (10) Gary N. Vance, Satellite Educational Resources Consortium (SERC) on Technology in the Classroom. An opening statement by Strom Thurmond, member of the Subcommittee on Education, Arts, and Humanities, is also included. (DB)
