Book excerpt: Robert Menzies, writing in the lucid, moderate style for which he is well known, skillfully explains Pentecostal theology. His answer for the uncertain and the confused is a skillful melding of sound hermeneutics, solid exegesis, and heartfelt testimony. Pentecost demonstrates that the Pentecostal experience is by far the best twenty-first-century expression of Luke's distinctive vision of the Spirit-baptized church in mission. This book is a heartfelt invitation for all Christians to be open to a new filling of the Holy Spirit of Jesus so He can continue to do immeasurably more for and through mere human beings than any of us can ask or even imagine!

Download or read book Breathe written by Laura Alary and published by Paraclete Press. This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imbued with a sense of wonder, and a strong connection to the natural world, Laura Alary’s books invite young readers to engage with the liturgical seasons of the church year. Breathe is a journey through Ascension, Pentecost, and Ordinary Time. “The day of Pentecost is coming. The church is changing color. The white and gold of Easter will soon burst into flaming red, then cool to green.” So begins Breathe: A Child's Guide to Ascension, Pentecost, and the Growing Time. In the warm, thoughtful style that has made her books so popular with families who want to encourage their children to think deeply and engage their spiritual imaginations, Laura Alary presents the third book in a trilogy (previous books include Look! A Child’s Guide to Advent and Christmas and Make Room: A Child’s Guide to Lent and Easter) that explores the church’s liturgical seasons. At the heart of Breathe lies a puzzle: How can Jesus go away, yet promise to be with us always? Can we trust someone who comes and goes so mysteriously? Moving beyond long ago and far away events, Breathe invites children to wonder about and watch for the presence and work of the Spirit here and now, in practices of prayer and mindfulness, and through acts of justice, generosity, and kindness. Slowly but surely, we discover that we are the body of Jesus now, his way of being in the world. And that whenever we choose the way of love, Jesus is there. Always.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a church rocked by controversies over vernacular Scripture, iconoclasm, and the power of clergy, men and women arose in protest. Today we call this protest movement the Protestant Reformation. At its heart, the Reformation was a great revival of the church centered on the recovery of biblical truth and the gospel of free grace. This movement continues to instruct and inspire believers even into the present day. Reformation 500 celebrates the Reformation and probes the ways it has shaped our world for the better. With essays from an array of disciplines, this book explores the impact of the Reformation across a wide range of human experience. Literature, education, visual art, culture, politics, music, theology, church life, and Baptist history all provide prisms through which the Reformation legacy is viewed. From Augustine to Zwingli, historical figures like Luther, Calvin, Barth, Bonhoeffer, Rembrandt, Bach, Bunyan, and Wycliffe all find their way into this amazing 500-year story. From Anglicans to Baptists, scientists to poets, Reformation 500 weaves these many historical threads into a modern-day tapestry.

Download or read book Pentecost written by Jw Luman and published by Jw Luman. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phenomenon of Pentecost is one of the most debated issues in the Church worldtoday. The so-called "Pentecostals" have made it an issue of "tongues" orsupernatural acts of one kind or another. Others have made it an issue of dress, i.e.what kind of clothing should be or should not be worn, mainly by women. The term "glossolalia," a combination of two Greek New Testament words meaning tospeak and tongues, has been used by many to define Pentecost. Although it is stated in Acts 2:4 and other places that they all spake with other tongues, speaking with tongues in and of itself does not define the fulfillment of the Feast of Pentecost about which we read in the New Testament. In fact, those who define the fulfillment of Pentecost in the manner I have described above should not call themselves "Pentecostal" at all, for they have missed the very heart of the matter. They have made Pentecost a man made movement rather than a reality of Salvation, which is fulfilled in Christ. In so doing, they have divided, weakened, and robbed the Body ofChrist of the true greatness of our Salvation. It is the desire of the author and all who contributed to this work, to set before thereader, whose heart hungers for the Truth, the true richness of Pentecost as fulfilled inChrist. May the Spirit of Pentecost lead and guide all who read with a heart that isturned to know Christ in all of His glorious fullness.

Download or read book Spirit Hermeneutics written by Keener and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2016 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we hear the Spirit's voice in Scripture? Once we have done responsible exegesis, how may we expect the Spirit to apply the text to our lives and communities? In Spirit Hermeneutics biblical scholar Craig Keener addresses these questions, carefully articulating how the experience of the Spirit that empowered the church on the day of Pentecost can -- and should -- dynamically shape our reading of Scripture today. Keener considers what Spirit-guided interpretation means, explores implications of an epistemology of Word and Spirit for biblical hermeneutics, and shows how Scripture itself models an experiential appropriation of its message. Bridging the Word-Spirit gap between academic and experiential Christian approaches, Spirit Hermeneutics narrates a way of reading the Bible that is faithful both to the Spirit-inspired biblical text and the experience of the Spirit among believers. -- from book flap.

Download or read book Tongues of Fire written by Paul O. Ingram and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-09-17 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pentecost celebrates the countless expressions of God’s love and wisdom. Like a skilled dancer, God’s Holy Spirit moves through all creation, bringing forth life and love and inspiration. Fire and wind are everywhere. Inspiration and revelation are just a moment away and can come either by surprise or as a result of the interplay between God’s wisdom and our intentional spiritual practices. The spirit blows where it wills, in all directions, embracing all life, human and nonhuman. In other words, Pentecost is about God’s omnipresence, which Ingram interprets through the categories of Whiteheadian process theology, as God’s ever-present “initial aim” that all things and events at every moment of space-time achieve the maximum self-fulfillment of which they are capable. Intentionally conforming our “subjective” aims for our own fulfillment with God’s initial aim for us, as the historical Jesus did, is the call of Pentecost. Omnipresence is an all-or-nothing deal. God can’t be a little omnipresent. Either God is present in, with, and under every thing and event since the beginning of creation—what theologians and philosophers call panentheism—or omnipresence makes no sense.
