This book was released on 2018-03-07 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Real Louis the Fifteenth, Vol. 2 Owing to the inordinate affection Of the King for Madame Henriette, his eldest daughter at Versailles, Pompadour had a very difiicult part to play. For behind the placid and too obedient Henriette was the fat, unwieldy Dauphin, and behind the Dauphin the Jesuit party. They pushed Henriette, who was twenty One in 1748, to yield in all matters to the King's wishes while her father, but seventeen years Older than herself, was in that year ruining not only the moral nature Of Henriette, but that Of her next Sister the turbulent Adelai'de, full Of the sparkle and fire Of her mother's Polish race. Having quitted the army for ever at the age Of thirty - eight, having become sickened Of work and the affairs of the State owing to the devices Of Madame de Pompadour, the King had indeed fallen very low. Greedy Of money, he speculated in Wheat at a time when the people were starving, speculated on a surety, since his co-speculators held the wheat reserves, merely to increase the ready money wherewith to indulge at Ver sailles and at Choisy in his vices to his heart's content. At night, in this year Of the peace, he commenced his infamous habit Of shutting himself up with his daughters and causing them to become intoxicated with himself. Since it was a known fact that when Louis XV. Became drunk he also became absolutely ignorant of what he did, perfectly oblivious too on the following morning as to what might have occurred, there is in connection with these nightly suppers a considerable matter for surmise. Download or read book The Real Louis the Fifteenth Vol 1 written by Andrew C. P. Haggard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Real Louis, the Fifteenth, Vol. 1: With 34 Full-Page Portraits, Including 2 Photogravure Plates Up to 1749, however, the Priest, under one guise or another, and the Petticoat, in frequently changing form, ruled contemporaneously and frequently con jointly. After that date the ruling element became gradually centred in the decision Of Pompadour, an invalid and bourgeoise mistress who had long ceased to charm, or the whim Of du Barry, a vulgar and self-assured courtesan who sprang from the lowest ranks Of the people. Great indeed is the change with which we are con fronted when we close the volume Of the atheistical Regent Of the Roues and Open that Of the degrading days of Louis XV., the devout pupil, so far as form goes, of holy Mother Church. One passes at once from the full light Of day at the palais-royal, where every action, no matter how well intentioned, no matter how ignoble, takes place before all the world, to the gloom Of night in the darksome petits cabinets Of Versailles. There, one unpatriotic trick, one infamous or inglorious intrigue succeeds the other, all alike evolved from the cunning brain of the Jesuit without; it may be at Issy or saint-sulpice close by, or in the tricky purlieus Of the Court of Madrid. Under cover of the Skirts of Pere La Chaise and Madame de Maintenon. Book excerpt: Excerpt from France Under Louis XV, Vol. 1 of 2 A just idea cannot be formed Of the character of the French monarchy, nor of the probability of the king exercising wisely his great authority, without considering his modes of life, his social surroundings, the barriers of etiquette in which he was inclosed, the artificial panoply in which he 'was encased. Ver sailles, in the early part of the eighteenth century, wit nessed an existence, splendid indeed, but the formality of which had stiflr'ened into rigidity not unlike that of the courts of ancient Assyrian and Babylonian kings; if its etiquette was not SO benumbing as the sombre state Of Madrid, yet it did not help a monarch to understand the needs of his people, nor to perform the duties of his Office. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of France, Vol. 1 of 2: From the Earliest Times to the Consulate of Napoleon Bonaparte; To the End of the Reign of Louis the Fifteenth IT has been the purpose of the author to lay before the reader a clear narrative of the gradual development of a great people. N o attempt has been made to fill in every detail. The larger outlines of national growth have been followed, and every material change in the condition of the kingdom has been indicated. It is hardly necessary to say that every statement in the book is supported by authority. Not only have all the standard histories been consulted, but also those numerous [memoirs and Auto biographies in which the literature of France is so pecul iarly rich. To note the varying forms of government, to trace the ancient origins of modern laws and customs, to mark the encroachments of absolutism upon popular rights, to describe the long-continued struggle of the many to throw off the yoke of the few, to emphasize the corrupting influence of the union between Church and State, to illus trate once more the blighting effects of superstition, igno rance, blind obedience, unjust laws, confiscation under the disguise of unequal taxes, and the systematic plunder, year by year, of the weaker classes by the stronger, have been the motives which led to the enormous labour in volved in this book.
