Book Ebony Legends in Sports

Download or read book Ebony Legends in Sports written by P. Paul Provost and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-07 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The enthusiasm that I have for sports has led me to bring forth a work, encompassing many sports in which African Americans were not always privy to participate. In the effort to overcome this inequality, many challenges and struggles were experienced, because of the deprivation, and have been addressed within these pages. Much has been achieved as a result of the endurance of these many African American, legendary athletes. It is very disturbing to know what we, as African Americans, went through to arrive at where we are, and now appear to be losing ground. Staying abreast of the various sports has alerted me to the declination in numbers and deterioration of African Americans in the sports arena. This declination is a documented fact and must be expressed in bold terms. My primary purpose in writing this book, "Ebony Legends in Sports", is that it will certainly be a wake-up-call, for action, in the total African American community. My hope is that it will inspire the youth of this, and future generations, to return to the glory of the games, that they will become members of athletic programs, in mass, in their schools, follow through with their endeavors and persevere, as our legends did.

Book The talkSPORT Book of Premier League Legends

Download or read book The talkSPORT Book of Premier League Legends written by Bill Borrows and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-08-02 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this wonderful celebration of all that is best about the world's greatest football league, talkSPORT has taken on the challenge of listing the 100 greatest Premiership legends. Featuring contributions from many of talkSPORT's presenters, including Alan Brazil, Darren Gough and Stan Collymore, the talkSPORT team has drawn up its definitive listing of Premiership stars. Of course, being talkSPORT, nothing is straightforward and the opinions are hotly debated. Some surprising names make into the list, while others are relegated to the bottom or even fail to appear at all. Who comes out on top: Gianfranco Zola or Alan Shearer? How do you decide who's in and who's out from 20 years of footballing genius? Each of the stars is fully profiled, with surprising and fascinating information revealed about all of them, and their individual ranking in the list is fully justified. In short, this book will not only provide great football memories of moments that won leagues, spared clubs from relegation, and drew stunned silence from watching crowds, but cause much controversy - just like talkSPORT itself.

Download or read book A Wilder West written by Mary-Ellen Kelm and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2012-07-01 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rodeo cowboy is one of the most evocative images of the Wild West. The master of the frontier, he is renowned for his masculinity, toughness, and skill. A Wilder West returns to rodeo's small-town roots to explore how rodeo simultaneously embodies and subverts our traditional understandings of power relations between man and nature, women and men, settlers and Aboriginal peoples. An important contact zone – a chaotic and unpredictable place of encounter – rodeo has challenged expected social hierarchies, bringing people together across racial and gender divides to create friendships, rivalries, and unexpected intimacies. At the rodeo, Aboriginal riders became local heroes, and rodeo queens spoke their minds. A Wilder West complicates the idea of western Canada as a “white man's country” and shows how rural rodeos have been communities in which different rules applied. Lavishly illustrated, this creative history will change the way we see the West's most controversial sport.

Book Historical Dictionary of Boxing

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Boxing written by John Grasso and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2013-11-14 with total page 589 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boxing is one of the oldest sports in the world, reaching back to the Ancient Greeks, although it has become popular only in the past century or so. But, in some ways, it is a rather complicated sport since – to avoid unnecessary harm – it has been endowed with rules to keep it clean, referees to see the rules are obeyed, and organizations to regulate the sport. Boxing was once largely amateur, although the professional bouts attracted the most attention, but now it is also an Olympic sport. And, over the years, there has been one champion after another who symbolized what boxing was all about, such Joe Louis, Mohammad Ali and Cassius Clay. Naturally, these champions are the focus of the Historical Dictionary of Boxing as well, and they have the biggest entries in the dictionary section, but they had to fight against someone and there are dozens and dozens of other boxers with smaller entries. More of these boxers come from the United States than elsewhere, but there are others from Europe, Asia and Latin America, and there are also entries on the major boxing countries as well. Plus entries on the rules, on the organizations, and on the technical terminology and jargon you have to know just to follow the bouts. The introduction provides a broad view of boxing’s history while the chronology traces events from 688 B.C. to 2012 A.D. Not all that much has been written on boxing that is not ephemeral, but much of that literature can be found in the bibliography. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about the sport of boxing.

Book Latino Baseball Legends

Download or read book Latino Baseball Legends written by Lew Freedman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2010-08-11 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Told through profiles of the men who have made it a reality, this is the complex story of the triumphs achieved by—and challenges faced by—Latinos who have risen to the heights of Major League Baseball. Latino Baseball Legends: An Encyclopedia offers the most comprehensive, go-to source for everything relating to Latin American baseball stars, tracing the history of Latinos in baseball through the stories of those who have excelled at the game. Colorfully written 3,000-word entries explore the lives and careers of 25 dominant players, from legends such as Roberto Clemente to deserving, but comparatively unknown superstars such as Martin Dihigo. Shorter listings note another 75 Latinos who have figured prominently in the sport. The entries document the importance of baseball in Latin American culture and the way it has evolved in the players' home countries, but the encyclopedia does more than that. Its profiles also expose the difficulties faced by Latino players who are forced to overcome both a language barrier and the discrimination they face because of their skin color. And they demonstrate how proficiency with a bat and ball has become a great engine that can lift families out of poverty and provide hope for indigent youths.
