Download or read book A Textual Introduction To Social and Political Theory written by Richard Paul Bellamy and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1996-05-15 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a stimulating new approach to studying social and political theory. It combines specially selected extracts from the political classics with original and insightful essays offering a commentary upon them. The reader is drawn into a dialogue with the Western political tradition’s principal thinkers, whose ideas provide a common currency in which to debate the problems facing modern societies. Each of the twelve chapters combines extracts from two (or in one case three) political philosophers on a key political concept with a commentary essay. Each chapter does more than just introduce the reader to the classics; it also explains, via the commentary essay, the key concepts of political debate, and the historical contexts which led the thinkers to their different understandings of the nature of society.
Download or read book God s Federal Republic written by William Johnson Everett and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biblical religion is driven by a longing for God’s ultimate order of justice and peace. Most of this longing is steeped in the patriarchal symbols of kingship, monarchs, lords, fathers, and princes. This symbolism came to bind European churches to the legitimation of monarchies and empires for over a millennium. The American and now global experiment separated the churches, with their kingdom language, from government dedicated to democratic, republican, and federal constitutional order. Religious efforts to guide and critique government have subsequently suffered from political irrelevance or theocratic nationalism. Everett lifts up the biblical and classical origins of our present republican experiment to construct a theological position and religious symbolism that can imaginatively engage our present public life with a contemporary language permeated with a transcendent vision.
Download or read book A Covenantal Imagination written by William Johnson Everett and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-12-15 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This harvest of articles drawn from William Johnson Everett's career of teaching and research on four continents and in a variety of institutions shows the breadth, depth, and diversity of his interests. Like spotlights in the wider field of Christian social ethics, they illuminate the key threads that have held together an emerging tapestry of thought woven around the powerful concept of covenant. Whether lifting up concepts of covenant, federalism, and corporation, the "oikos" of work, family, and faith, the public nature and mission of the church, or the ethical meaning of journey metaphors, his rich and artful style leads us into thinking more deeply about the way our lives are joined in a "covenantal imagination" about a more just and sustainable world.
Download or read book American Republicanism written by Mortimer N.S. Sellers and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines what 'republicanism' meant to the Americans who drafted and ratified the United States Constitution, guaranteeing a 'republican form of government' to every state in the Union. M.N.S.Sellers compares the writings and speeches of the founders with the authors they read and imitated to identify the central tenets of American republicanism, and to demonstrate that American republican though directly reflected classical models, rather than a mediating tradition of English or continental political theory.

Book excerpt: "John Ruskin made eleven trips to Venice--the first with his family in 1835 when he was sixteen, the last in 1888, one year before he became irreversibly mad. The city had an importance for his art criticism, for his political thought, and even for his sad emotional life, which can scarcely be exaggerated. This book, which contains a mass of new documentation, deals with the eleven journeys, and their consequences, in turn"--Jacket.

Download or read book A Literary History of England written by Albert Croll Baugh and published by New York, Appleton-Century-Crofts. This book was released on 1948 with total page 1696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to provide a comprehensive history of the literature of England, an account that is at once scholarly and readable, capable of meeting the needs of mature students and of appealing to cultivated readers generally. While the literature of England is commonly thought of as literature in English, it is not likely that anyone will quarrel with the fact that some mention is made of writings in Latin and French during the medieval period, at a time when these languages served as vernaculars for certain classes. The Latin writings of the Renaissance and later periods, however, have been omitted for lack of space. Nor will anyone object to the inclusion of Scottish and Irish writers who do not belong geographically to England. Custom sufficiently sanctions including them. The original plan brought the history to an end with the year 1939 (the outbreak of the Second World War); but delay in publication caused by the war has permitted reference to a few events of a date subsequent to 1939. - Preface.
