Book The Reader in Luis Goytisolo s Antagon a Tetralogy

Download or read book The Reader in Luis Goytisolo s Antagon a Tetralogy written by Kevin E. Teegarden and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of the four installments comprising Luis Goytisolo’s Antagonía tetralogy—Recuento (1973), Los verdes de mayo hasta el mar (1976), La cólera de Aquiles (1979), and Teoría del conocimiento (1981)—examines the means by which these works of fiction, despite their structurally and linguistically complex discourse, seek to make themselves intelligible to the traditional reader. This reader-response approach to Antagonía demonstrates how the work, notwithstanding its efforts to elaborate an innovative prose that would supersede the tenets of (neo)realism that characterized Spanish fiction from the 1940s to the 1960s, reaches out to the traditional reader and ultimately affirms the power of language and literature as vehicles for understanding oneself and the world.

Book The Greens of May Down to the Sea

Download or read book The Greens of May Down to the Sea written by Luis Goytisolo and published by Spanish Literature. This book was released on 2019-01-30 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second volume of Goytisolo's acclaimed Antagonia tetralogy, The Greens of May Down to the Sea follows Raúl Ferrer Gaminde and his wife as they move from Barcelona to Rosas to begin a new life. Where the first volume of Antagonia occupied itself with the themes of war and political revolution, the second volume closely follows Raúl's development as a writer, his anxieties about the purposes of writing, and his willingness to sacrifice the other aspects of adult life to his creative impulses. Told in short, often dizzyingly complex fragments of thought and memory, the reader is invited into Raul's inner world, into his many fantasies, worries, and resentments, revealing over time his transformation from political radical to inner-directed artist.

Book Beyond the Metafictional Mode

Download or read book Beyond the Metafictional Mode written by Robert C. Spires and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term metafiction invaded the vocabulary of literary criticism around 1970, yet the textual strategies involved in turning fiction back onto itself can be traced through several centuries. In this theoretical/critical study Robert C. Spires examines the nature of metafiction and chronicles its evolution in Spain from the time of Cervantes to the 1970s, when the obsession with novelistic self-commentary culminated in an important literary movement. The critical portions of this study focus primarily on twentieth-century works. Included are analyses of Unamuno's Niebla, Jarnés's Locura y muerte de nadie and La novia del viento, Torrente Ballester's Don Juan, Cunquiero's Un hombre que se parecía a Orestes, and three novels from the "self-referential" movement of the 1970s, Juan Goytisolo's Juan sin Tierra, Luis Goytisolo's La colera de Aquiles, and Martín Gaite's El cuarto de atrás. Seeking a stronger theoretical basis for his critical readings, Spires offers a sharpened definition of the term metafiction. The mode arises, he declares, through an intentional violation of the boundaries that normally separate the worlds of the author, the fiction, and the reader. Building on theoretical foundations laid by Frye, Scholes, Genette, and others, Spires also proposes a literary paradigm that places metafiction in a position intermediate between fiction and literary theory. These theoretical formulations place Spires's book in the forefront of critical thought. At the same time, his full-scale analyses of Spanish metafictional works will be welcomed by Hispanists and other students of world literature.

Book excerpt: This potent drama, a collected volume of Goytisolo's famed tetralogy following a Catalan family, is widely regarded as one of the most profound inquiries ever undertaken on literary creation. Antagony surveys the social history of Barcelona and Catalonia, primarily since the end of the Spanish Civil War in 1939. The work, originally published as a tetralogy and now collected into one volume, follows the youth and education of Raúl Ferrer Gaminde, son of a well-connected, middle-class Catalan family that embraces Franco and Spanish Nationalism. Its potent drama plays out through Goytisolo’s crisp, forceful presentation of youth, humor, optimism, rebellion, violence, sexual awakening, indulgence, punishment, and the realization of one’s artistic vocation. Alternately modern and historical, Antagony displays intelligent realism, emotional gravity, profane beauty, brute vulgarity, sweeping rhetorical scope, and seamless transitions through long, streaming passages of narrative and introspection.
