Download or read book The Porphyrins V5 written by David Dolphin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Porphyrins, Volume V: Physical Chemistry, Part C explores the physical chemistry of porphyrins, their precursors, catabolic derivatives, and related compounds. The book covers photochemical, electrochemical, and routes of electron transfer, as well as primary redox reactions of porphyrins and metalloporphyrins; oxygenation of hemoglobin and the interactions of metalloporphyrins with dioxygen; the kinetics of porphyrin metalation; and solid state phenomena. This volume is organized into 11 chapters and begins with an overview of electron transfer and the mechanisms of oxidation and reduction. The discussion then turns to porphyrin photochemical reactions and reversible electron transfer reactions of metalloporphyrins. Selected examples in which the oxidized or reduced complexes have been shown to play a biochemical role are provided. The following chapters focus on the isolation and characterization of the photosynthetic pigments and their aggregation and coordination properties, along with those of the porphyrins and metalloporphyrins. The book concludes with an analysis of solid state phenomena in porphyrins and related materials, paying particular attention to semiconduction, photoconduction, and superconduction. This book will be of value to inorganic, organic, physical, and biochemists interested in the physical chemistry of porphyrins.

Book excerpt: International Union of Biochemistry, Volume 19: Haematin Enzymes, Part 1 provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of hematin enzymes. This book covers a variety of topics, including porphyrin complexes, chemical reactions of iron complexes, hemoprotein molecules, metalloporphyrins, and oxyhemoglobins. Organized into 22 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the relevance of magnetic susceptabilitty and magnetic resonance data. This text then examines studies on electron-transfer processes involving metal ions and shows how the electronic structures of the hem enzymes may be relevant to the types of electron-transfer that can take place. Other chapters consider the implications of the coordination of organic molecules to metal ions. This book presents as well a comparison between known properties and reactions of some simple iron complexes with chelating and conjugated ligands. The final chapter deals with the chemical structures of the prosthetic groups of the cytochromes of type a. This book is a valuable resource for scientists, theorists, and research workers.
Download or read book Developments in Dairy Chemistry 2 written by P. F. Fox and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the desirable flavour and textural attributes of dairy products are due to their lipid components; consequently, milk lipids have, tradi tionally, been highly valued, in fact to the exclusion of other milk components in many cases. Today, milk is a major source of dietary lipids in western diets and although consumption of milk fat in the form of butter has declined in some countries, this has been offset in many cases by increasing consumption of cheese and fermented liquid dairy products. This text on milk lipids is the second in a series entitled Developments in Dairy Chemistry, the first being devoted to milk proteins. The series is produced as a co-ordinated treatise on dairy chemistry with the objective of providing an authoritative reference source for lecturers, researchers and advanced students. The biosynthesis, chemical, physical and nutritional properties of milk lipids have been reviewed in eight chapters by world experts. However, space does not permit consideration of the more product-related aspects of milk lipids which play major functional roles in several dairy products, especially cheese, dehydrated milks and butter.

Download or read book Biochemistry of Dioxygen written by Lloyd L. Ingraham and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written for the research biochemist who needs to know more about the particular field of dioxygen metabolism, whether this be for designing lectures for a graduate level course or for his or her own research needs. We hope researchers in a given area of dioxygen metabolism will gain knowledge of related fields of dioxygen metabolism. We have decided to use the term dioxygen to distinguish molecular oxygen from divalent oxygen in water and organic compounds, dioxygen being a simpler term than molecular oxygen. We do not intend to review the metabolism of all compounds that contain oxygen, since this would include all of biochemistry. An understanding of dioxygen chemistry is essential to the discussion of the biochemistry of dioxygen. While this statement could be made about any biochemical constituent, the chemistry of dioxygen is so unusual that interpre tations without detailed chemical background are futile. Prediction of dioxygen reaction products by analogy with other oxidants is impossible. The partial reduction products of dioxygen, superoxide ion and peroxides, develop naturally in the chemistry of dioxygen. It would be difficult to discuss dioxygen biochemistry without first discussing these partial reduction products.
