Book Reason And Religious Faith

Download or read book Reason And Religious Faith written by Terence Penelhum and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concerns of philosophy and of religion overlap to a considerable extent—each seeks, among other things, to develop an account of mankind's place in the universe. But their relationship has never been an easy one. Faith gives rise to philosophical puzzlement just as secular beliefs do, but it also generates special philosophical questions that secular beliefs do not. This engaging text encourages students and other readers to grapple with these special questions of faith, to look at how they relate to other issues in philosophy and in the empirical study of religion. Equally accurate and insightful in its treatment of historical authors such as Aquinas and Pascal as it is in treatment of such contemporaries as Plantinga and Alston, Reason and Religious Faith is the most up-to-date and balanced introduction to these issues available. It marks an advance over earlier surveys in its recognition of religious pluralism and the relevance of non-Christian religious views. It is an ideal introduction to the issues of religious epistemology for students of both religious studies and philosophy.

Book Studies in Pascal s Ethics

Download or read book Studies in Pascal s Ethics written by A.W. Baird and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of these studies is to show how Pascal's moral outlook reflects the influence on his thought of the basic doctrine of the three orders. This does not mean that an attempt is made to classify all Pascal's moral judgements in order to relate them to that doctrine. The intention is rather to dIstinguish the different moral stances Pascal takes, and to ascertain how far the apparent inconsistencies between them can be explained, if not reconciled, in the light of the orders. It is made clear at the outset how the three orders form the framework of Pascal's scale of values, with the different orders representing at once categories of moral value and orders of being. The peculiar nature of this scale, in which moral and ontological values coalesce, calls for a double criterion, or variable, to allow for differences both of degree and of kind. Since the criterion of rank in the scale is reality, the assigning of value becomes largely a question of perspective: a quality from a given order taken by itself is real, and has moral value, but when compared with a quality from a higher order it loses both its reality and its worth.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reactions Between Dogma and Philosophy, Illustrated From the Works of S. Thomas Aquinas: Lectures Delivered in London and Oxford, October December 1916 MY very special thanks are due to the hibbert trustees, in the first place, for the characteristic generosity of conception which enabled them to sanction the choice of a subject that lay, in appear ance at least, somewhat out of line with the general scheme of the Hibbert Lectures; and in the second place, for the unfailing patience and consideration they have exercised during the long delays in pre paring this volume for the press, delays caused in part by the nature of the work, but in part by a protracted period of illness, during which all work had to be suspended.
