Book Production of Hydrogen Bromide by Bromine methane Reactions at Elevated Temperature

Download or read book Production of Hydrogen Bromide by Bromine methane Reactions at Elevated Temperature written by Richard S. Larson and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrogen bromide is a potentially useful intermediate for hydrogen production by electrolysis because it has a low cell potential and is extremely soluble in water. Processes have been proposed to exploit these properties, but among the important issues to be resolved is the efficiency of HBr production from hydrocarbon precursors. This investigation evaluated a fundamental facet of such a technology by studying the reaction of methane and bromine at elevated temperature to determine the yield and kinetics of HBr formation. Laboratory experimentation and computational chemistry were combined to provide a description of this reaction for possible application to reactor design at a larger scale. Experimental studies with a tubular flow reactor were used to survey a range of reactant ratios and reactor residence times at temperatures between 500 C and 800 C. At temperatures near 800 C with excess methane, conversions of bromine to HBr exceeded 90% and reaction products included solid carbon (soot) in stoichiometric amounts. At lower temperatures, HBr conversion was significantly reduced, the products included much less soot, and the formation of bromocarbon compounds was indicated qualitatively. Calculations of chemical equilibrium behavior and reaction kinetics for the experimental conditions were performed using the Sandia CHEMKIN package. An elementary multistep mechanism for the gas-phase chemistry was used together with a surface mechanism that assumed facile deposition of radical species at the reactor walls. Simulations with the laminar-flow boundary-layer code of the CHEMKIN package gave reasonable agreement with experimental data.

Book Organic Functional Group Analysis

Download or read book Organic Functional Group Analysis written by F. E. Critchfield and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-08-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organic Functional Group Analysis deals with versatile and reliable chemical methods for the analysis of most of the more common organic functional groups. The minimum number of methods required to solve the maximum number of problems is presented. The scope and known limitations of each method are discussed so that analytical chemists can decide whether the method under consideration can be applied to their particular problem. The methods are either titrimetric or colorimetric in nature. This volume is comprised of 11 chapters and begins with an overview of the analytical methods used for organic functional groups, including both titrimetric and colorimetric methods. The discussion then turns to the properties of acids and bases; selection of the best acid-base method for a particular purpose; and some of the more useful acid-base methods. Subsequent chapters explore methods for the determination of nitrogen compounds such as amines and amides; carbonyl compounds and derivatives; hydroxyl compounds such as tertiary alcohols; unsaturated compounds; 1,2-epoxy compounds; esters and peroxides; carboxylic acid anhydrides; and sulfur compounds. This book is intended for analytical chemists.

Book excerpt: The Peptides, Volume I: Methods of Peptide Synthesis focuses on detailed description of protecting groups, individual amino acids, and coupling reactions. The publication first offers information on amino-protecting and carboxyl-protecting groups, including carboxyl protection by salt formation, esterification, and amide formation and acyl-type, alkyl-type, and urethane protecting groups. The text then examines the formation of the peptide bond and amino acids. Discussions focus on amino acids with the alcoholic hydroxyl group, sulfur amino acids, basic and acidic amino acids, synthesis of peptides by activation of the amino group, and peptide synthesis by activation of the carboxyl group. The manuscript elaborates on the synthesis of cyclic peptides, depsipeptides, peptoids, and the plastein reaction. Topics include synthesis of plastein-active peptides, glycopeptides, phosphopeptides, and S-peptides. The publication is a dependable source of data for readers interested in the methods of peptide synthesis.
