  • Pages : 290 pages

Download or read book Hinton written by Mark Blacklock and published by Granta Books. This book was released on 2020-02-04 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A nineteenth-century tale of dangerous and pioneering ideas, based on the incredible true story of a scandalous British mathematician. Howard Hinton and his family are living in Japan, escaping from a scandal. Hinton’s obsession is his work, his voyages into mathematical pure space, into the fourth dimension, but also his wife and sons, each of whom are entangled in the strange and unknown landscapes of Hinton’s science fictions. In a bravura and startling meeting of real and philosophical elements, Mark Blacklock has created a ravishing period piece of late-Victorian social, scientific and domestic life. Hinton is about extraordinary discoveries, and terrible choices. It is about people who discover and map other realms, and what the implications might be for those of us left behind. “A singular literary achievement.” —TheObserver “A refreshing, unusual and enriching tale of sadness and scandal.” —Spectator “Somewhere between detective novel, philosophical head-scratcher and historical page-turner, Hinton is a chimerical treat.” —Tatler “A brilliant resurrectionist raid on the past as it should have unfolded. Mark Blacklock breathes new life into the tropes of detective fiction, occult mathematics and forensic science. He makes new mysteries out of re-forgotten enigmas.” —Iain Sinclair

Book excerpt: My Stories This is a collection of my short stories, travelogues and anecdotes published in some renowned English dailies of north east India. The short stories revolve around common man’s life. In the first story “Bolt from the Blue’’ tells about the after effects of demonetization. In‘’ Hues of Blue’’ the pandemic created miseries is well depicted. ‘’The Mysterious Lady”, ‘’November Rain’’, “The Gift” all three are about simple romance. ‘’Broken Dreams’’ and ‘’Street Life’’ showcased the struggle for existence of common man. In the travelogues section I have tried to provide a visual representation of my tours. All of my trips were road trips and I singlehandedly drove my car to different difficult destinations along with my wife and son. Be it Kathmandu and Pokhara, Thimphu and Paro or Tawang and Darjeeling all trips were to hilly terrain. In the anecdotes section I have remembered some incidents associated with my life. “Sleeping Driver’’, ’’Meat Misery’’ and ‘’Water Worries’’ are of humorous genre. Other write ups are about memories of my late parents, my school days, my college days, and my work life and last but not the least my saviours during my distress. Hope you will enjoy reading this small effort from me and shower blessings upon me.

Is this the same land, where love, compassion and care were the consciousness of people? No religion promotes terrorism instead terrorism has become the sharp cut religion of the world.” “Fanaticism is the root cause of any religious rebellion.” “Why have terrorists chosen Mumbai, just because Mumbaikars are audacious and adventurous? Is it an easy access? Are they jealous of “Care a Damn” attitude of the Mumbaikars? Are they scared of the beautiful mingling of various religions and cultures under one roof? No matter what the reason may be; religion called “Terrorism” is the most aggressive and alarming philosophy giving impulse to reign of terror in the entire world.”

Book Grounds for Play

Download or read book Grounds for Play written by Kathryn Hansen and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-12-22 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nautanki performances of northern India entertain their audiences with often ribald and profane stories. Rooted in the peasant society of pre-modern India, this theater vibrates with lively dancing, pulsating drumbeats, and full-throated singing. In Grounds for Play, Kathryn Hansen draws on field research to describe the different elements of nautanki performance: music, dance, poetry, popular story lines, and written texts. She traces the social history of the form and explores the play of meanings within nautanki narratives, focusing on the ways important social issues such as political authority, community identity, and gender differences are represented in these narratives. Unlike other styles of Indian theater, the nautanki does not draw on the pan-Indian religious epics such as the Ramayana or the Mahabharata for its subjects. Indeed, their storylines tend to center on the vicissitudes of stranded heroines in the throes of melodramatic romance. Whereas nautanki performers were once much in demand, live performances now are rare and nautanki increasingly reaches its audiences through electronic media—records, cassettes, films, television. In spite of this change, the theater form still functions as an effective conduit in the cultural flow that connects urban centers and the hinterland in an ongoing process of exchange.
