Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 29 (thesis year 1984) a total of 12,637 theses titles from 23 Canadian and 202 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 29 reports theses submitted in 1984, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Characterization of Structural Adhesives Using Lap Shear and Pin and Collar Tests

Download or read book Characterization of Structural Adhesives Using Lap Shear and Pin and Collar Tests written by Yogesh Nandwani and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasingly stringent government regulations on vehicle fuel economy and emission standards have challenged auto manufacturers to improve the fuel economy of cars built for sale in North America. Lightweighting vehicles is an efficient method of achieving this goal, as lighter vehicles have better fuel economy compared to heavier ones. Vehicle weight can be reduced by optimized design and by using alternative lightweight materials, such as aluminum and magnesium. Combining both approaches results in a vehicle which is comprised of strategically-placed materials to fulfill performance requirements. Constructing a vehicle frame with dissimilar materials using traditional joining methods can be challenging. Adhesive bonding is one alternative to traditional methods with advantages in areas such as mitigation of galvanic corrosion, reducing stress concentrations, and enhanced fatigue strength. The strength of an adhesive bond is highly dependent on the conditions of the surfaces of the bonded materials. Two different toughened epoxy structural adhesives were investigated in this study, a two part epoxy (DP460NS) and a one-part epoxy (SA9850). Experimental lap shear tests were undertaken to identify optimum strength combinations between adhesives and adherend surface preparation. Each adherend was prepared using a variety of pretreatment methods including conversion coatings, anodization, mechanical abrasion and intentional contamination by forming lubricant. The samples were assembled at different time periods to observe the effect of time on the surface pretreatment methods. One limitation of this test is that the joint is subjected to mixed-mode loading. The experimental tests were simulated using a commercially available FEA software package and measured material properties to provide insight into the measured strength values. Pin and collar tests were performed to measure adhesive strength in pure shear loading at varying strain rates. Several displacement measurement methods were investigated, with an optical displacement providing the highest resolution in measurement. When bonding aluminum, it was found that adhesive joints made with DP460NS exhibited higher dependence on surface preparation methods, compared to the joints produced with SA9850. Gritblasted surface produced the best adhesion to DP460NS. Bonds created with SA9850 produced relatively high joint strength numbers on all tested combinations, with contamination of adherends with a metal forming lubricant (drylube E1) producing the strongest bonds. When bonding magnesium, the highest joint strength numbers were acquired by a gritblasted surface with DP460NS, and contaminated surface with SA9850. However, the joint strength numbers were consistently lower than those acquired with aluminum adherends, suggesting the need for research into other types of pretreatment methods. For the pin and collar tests, the adhesives exhibited an increase in strength at higher shear deformation rates. The very small deformations, on the order of microns and similar to the deformation of the adherends during the test, did not allow for full stress-strain curves to be developed. However, the strength characteristics were measured, where the two-part epoxy (DP460NS) demonstrated a larger increase in strength with strain rate compared to the one-part epoxy (SA9850). Recommendations for future work include testing dissimilar adherend materials to investigate the effect of imbalanced joints on adhesive strength. Additional tests should be investigated to measure shear properties such as the edge notch flexural beam. Ultimately, the contributions of this research include the evaluation of surface preparations for adhesive joining of important lightweighting materials, and the measurement of strength in shear loading, which is necessary for implementation of these properties with computer aided engineering approaches.

Book Structural Adhesives

Download or read book Structural Adhesives written by K. L. Mittal and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2023-05-02 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural Adhesives Uniquely provides up-to-date and comprehensive information on the topic in an easily-accessible form. A structural adhesive can be described as a high-strength adhesive material that is isotropic in nature and bonds two or more parts together in a load-bearing structure. A structural adhesive material must be capable of transmitting the stress/load without loss of structural integrity within design limits. There are many types of established structural adhesives, including epoxy, urethane, acrylic, silicone, etc. Structural Adhesives comprises nine chapters and is divided into two parts: Part 1, Preparation, Properties, and Characterization; Part 2, Applications. The topics covered include: structural epoxy adhesives; biological reinforcement of epoxies as structural adhesives; marble dust reinforced epoxy structural adhesive composites; characterization of various structural adhesive materials; effects of shear and peel stress distributions on the behavior of structural adhesives; the inelastic response of structural aerospace adhesives; structural reactive acrylic adhesives: their preparation, characterization, properties, and applications; application of structural adhesives in composite connections; and naval applications of structural adhesives. Audience This book should be of much use and interest to adhesionists, materials scientists, adhesive technologists, polymer scientists, and those working in the construction, railway, automotive, aviation, bridge, and shipbuilding industries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume documents the proceedings of the International Symposium on Adhesive Joints: Formation, Characteristics and Testing held under the auspices of the Division of Polymer Mater ials:Science and Engineering of the American Chemical Society in Kansas City, MO, September 12-17, 1982. There is a myriad of applications (ranging from aerospace to surgery) where adhesives are used to join different materials, and concomitantly the understanding of the behavior of adhesive joints becomes very important. There are many factors which can influence the behavior of adhesive joints, e.g., substrate preparation, in terfacial aspects, joint design, mode of stress, external environ ment, etc., and in order to understand the joint behavior in a holistic manner, one must take due cognizance of all these germane factors. So this symposium was planned to address not only how to make acceptable bonds but their characterization, durability and testing were also accorded due consideration.
