Book The Chinese Dairy Sector

Download or read book The Chinese Dairy Sector written by Huiyuan Zou and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rising values of Chinese dairy imports in recent years generated studies exploring the market potentials for future importing. These studies typically treat the country and its population as uniform and undifferentiated, with homogeneous consumption and production patterns, ignoring the fact that demographic and geographic features are very different across China. At the same time, China's milk production is expanding rapidly, and unevenly in the last 20 years. The supply of milk, a highly perishable commodity, makes the geographic location of production and spatial price differences important factors in defining the availability of milk to populations across the country. The scenarios of inter-regional trade of milk powder and other storable dairy products across China are emerging. This paper is devoted to building an inter-regional dairy trade model for China, and predicting its dynamic internal dairy trade flow under free trade scenario. This paper updates and summarizes dairy product consumption and supply trends in China, and divides China in four regions. Panel data is used to check consumer and producer responses in different regions, and, at the same time, serve as a test for the hypothesis that China's dairy consumption preference and production patterns are different across the country. Partial equilibrium is the framework used to build the inter-regional dairy trade model. Our results show that in the major milk producing of Northwestern China producers will suffer most and local consumers may not benefit that much. Eastern China, the richest area, is not benefiting as much from free trade since its high income consumers are not that price sensitive. This region will continue to be the largest importer among the four regions. Inland China and Western China are less price sensitive in production but more price responsive in consumption. With price reduction under free trade, these regions gain more and a free trade policy will stimulate the imports in these two regions.

Book Farmer Participation the Dairy Industry and the Rise of Dairy Production in China

Download or read book Farmer Participation the Dairy Industry and the Rise of Dairy Production in China written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With rapid income growth, dairy production and consumption in China have increased significantly. This emergence of the dairy sector will provide opportunities for farmers to participate in a high-value, potentially more lucrative enterprise. The overall goal of this paper is to analyze the major determinants of farmers' participation in dairy production. Our main question is whether or not the pace of the emergence of the dairy processing industry has affected the ability of farmers to participate in dairy production and whether or not it has limited the expansion of their herd size. Based on household, village and processor surveys conducted in the Greater Beijing region, our analysis shows that the location of dairy processing firms is one of the key factors that determines the participation of farmers in dairy production. Although other factors affect participation and herd size -- for example, access to roads and the ability to get a job off the farm (which affects the opportunity cost of household members) -- access to dairy processors is shown to be the major factor that has encouraged the growth of dairy production over the past decade. The results also show that poor, less educated farmers with relatively less access to land are not excluded from the rapid expansion of the Greater Beijing dairy market.

Book Who is Going to Supply the Milk to China s South

Download or read book Who is Going to Supply the Milk to China s South written by Jimin Wang and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China's dairy industry has experienced rapid expansion in recent years, with an average annual growth rate of 23.8 percent from 2000 to 2006. However, there exists a serious geographical distribution imbalance in milk production and consumption. Approximately 85 percent of China's milk is produced in northern China, where 40 percent of the country's population reside. In contrast, only about 15 percent of the milk is produced in China's south, where 60 percent of China's population reside. This has resulted in a significant gap between milk production and consumption in southern China and this gap is expected to rise. This paper considers China's milk demand and supply situation, analyzes the likely potential for China to expand its milk production and explores options for meeting milk demandsupply shortages. Policy and trade implications are discussed.

Book International agrifood chains and networks

Download or read book International agrifood chains and networks written by Jos Bijman and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book brings together a rich collection of material on management and organization in agri-food chains and networks. Producers, processors, traders and retailers of agricultural and food products operate in an economic and institutional environment that is increasingly dominated by global developments. Therefore, organizing efficient and effective supply chains as well as managing collaboration among participating firms requires an international perspective. This book presents theoretical and practical insights from many different parts of the world. Topics covered include classical supply chain management issues like logistics, information exchange (e.g. tracking and tracing), quality control, safety assurance, and chain performance. Other timely issues covered are joint innovation, and shared responsibility for sustainability in agri-food supply chains. Special attention is given to issues of governance and organization of chains and networks, for example, by focussing on the role of producer organisations (such as farmer cooperatives) in their effort to combine horizontal and vertical collaboration in the international upply chain. This book is relevant for both academics and managers interested in the latest advances in research on management and organization of international agri-food chains and networks."

Book CHINA FOOD SECURITY AND AGRICULTURAL GOING GLOBAL

Download or read book CHINA FOOD SECURITY AND AGRICULTURAL GOING GLOBAL written by Han Jun and published by American Academic Press. This book was released on 2022-11-21 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through decades of efforts, China has overall achieved self-sufficiency in food supply, which is the result of effective policies and measures adopted by the Chinese government. This book focuses on China’s food security strategy and agricultural going global strategy and goes into details on policies and measures for achieving domestic food security. It specially analyzes status and development trend of China’s corn industry since corn is the most sensitive grain variety that plays an important role as food, feed and raw material for bioenergy. It also studies overseas agricultural development potential for agricultural investment and cooperation globally. It finally elaborates China’s agricultural going global strategy, with specific cases to evaluate policy effect, in order to promote international cooperation in agriculture. The conclusions are that as the world’s most populated country, China should rely on its domestic production to ensure food supply. However, with intensified constraints on resources and environment, China should appropriately adjust its food security goals to ensure the basic self-sufficiency of cereals and rely more on global markets for non-cereal grain varieties. Looking to the future, China should establish a food security system that is efficient, open and sustainable through profound reform to increase its domestic food productivity, promote sustainable development of agriculture, and expand international cooperation in agriculture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early twentieth century, China was stigmatized as the Land of Famine. Meanwhile in Europe and the United States, scientists and industrialists seized upon the soybean as a miracle plant that could help build modern economies and healthy nations. Soybeans, protein-packed and domestically grown, were a common food in China, and soybean milk (doujiang) was poised for reinvention for the modern age. Scientific soybean milk became a symbol of national growth and development on Chinese terms, and its competition with cows milk reflected Chinas relationship to global modernity and imperialism. The Other Milk explores the curious paths that led to the notion of the deficient Chinese diet and to soybean milk as the way to guarantee food security for the masses. Jia-Chen Fus in-depth examination of the intertwined relationships between diet, health, and nation illuminates the multiple forces that have been essential in the formation of nutrition science in China.

Book Food and Agriculture Security

Download or read book Food and Agriculture Security written by Justin J. Kastner and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2010-11-02 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a historical, multidisciplinary explanation of the complexities of the food system in the United States and around the world, spanning the beginning of the modern era to today's globalized, interconnected market. A revolution in food supply and trade has been ongoing for decades, although most American consumers have been unaware of these changes—after all, to the end buyer, the food seems the same at the supermarket. But today, a large percentage of our food and agricultural products are imported to our country, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has designated Food and Agriculture as a "Critical Infrastructure and Key Resources Sector." Cross-border cooperation is essential, given the volume of trade, the nature of testing required, and the importance of ensuring the safety of these products. This book examines our food system in its entirety, discusses threats to food and agriculture security in America and abroad, and covers trade policy issues and U.S.-specific regulations affecting the food supply chain security. Emerging models of cross-border cooperation in Food and Agriculture Security are also described.

Book The Emerging Dairy Economy in China

Download or read book The Emerging Dairy Economy in China written by Zhang-Yue Zhou and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currently per capita consumption of dairy products in China is low. In view of China's strong economic growth and the resulting higher consumer income, whether this would represent a great market potential for dairy products has drawn much interest from the dairy industry both within and outside China. This paper overviews China's dairy market with up-to-date information and highlights important factors affecting its development. The study shows that the growth of demand for dairy products in China is promising. However, despite the fact that China's accession to the WTO will result in reductions in trade barriers, a substantial increase in exports of dairy products to the Chinese market is unlikely in the near future. This is due to a number of reasons including taste differences between the Chinese and the consumers of those major dairy exporters. Increased understanding of the Chinese dairy markets and increased attention to modifying their products to suit the tastes of the Chinese are essential for dairy exporters to succeed in the Chinese market.

Book Re imagining Milk

Download or read book Re imagining Milk written by Andrea S. Wiley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Milk is a fascinating food: it is produced by mothers of each mammalian species for consumption by nursing infants of that species, yet many humans drink the milk of another species (mostly cows) and they drink it throughout life. Thus we might expect that this dietary practice has some effects on human biology that are different from other foods. In Re-imagining Milk Wiley considers these, but also puts milk-drinking into a broader historical and cross-cultural context. In particular, she asks how dietary policies promoting milk came into being in the U.S., how they intersect with biological variation in milk digestion, how milk consumption is related to child growth, and how milk is currently undergoing globalizing processes that contribute to its status as a normative food for children (using India and China as examples). Wiley challenges the reader to re-evaluate their assumptions about cows' milk as a food for humans. Informed by both biological and social theory and data, Re-imagining Milk provides a biocultural analysis of this complex food and illustrates how a focus on a single commodity can illuminate aspects of human biology and culture.

Book Organizing Rural China Rural China Organizing

Download or read book Organizing Rural China Rural China Organizing written by Ane Bislev and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2012-04-05 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the early 1980s China embarked on what can be seen as one of the world’s largest social experiments ever. Decollectivization meant much more than the reorganization of agricultural production into family based farming. It signalled significant changes to rural social relations, when privatization, marketization and increased geographical mobility started tearing apart the economic and social institutions that had structured collective village life under Mao. The focus of this book is on how rural society has been reorganized in the 21st century. The first chapters outline the basic organizational structure of rural China and can be used as an introduction to the topic in a classroom setting. They show how the state and its social scientists draw up plans to overcome the perceived lack of rural social organization, and discuss the often problem-ridden implementation of their ideas. The second section presents case studies of institutions that organize key aspects of rural life: Boarding schools where rural children learn to accept organizational hierarchies; lineage organizations carving out new roles for themselves; “dragonhead enterprises” expected to organize agricultural production and support rural development, and several others. The book is of theoretical interest because of its focus on the re-embedding, or reintegration, of individuals into new types of collectivities, which are less predetermined by tradition and habit and more a matter of, at least perceived, individual choice. Most chapters are based on extensive fieldwork and contain vivid examples from daily life, which will make the book attractive to anyone who wants to understand how Chinese villagers experience the extraordinary social changes they are going through.

Book Sustainable and Environmentally Friendly Dairy Farms

Download or read book Sustainable and Environmentally Friendly Dairy Farms written by Santiago García-Yuste and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-05-20 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainable and Environmentally Friendly Dairy Farms presents an innovative environmental proposal. While chiefly focusing on dairy farms, the environmental solution it describes is applicable to the entire livestock sector. The book is divided into five chapters, the first of which addresses the carbon footprint of dairy farms. Chapter two provides an overview of the animal production system, focusing on the physiology of the ruminant stomach and the greenhouse gases emitted by dairy cows. In turn, the third chapter covers dairy farm systems, explaining both intensive and extensive husbandry systems. The book’s final two chapters present the-state-of-art in CO2 capture, and describe a new and innovative CO2-RFP strategy. Given its scope, the book will be of interest to chemists, biologists, biotechnologists, and researchers active in agriculture and food-related areas, as well as those working in the food and dairy industry.

Book Making Of An Economic Superpower The Unlocking China s Secret Of Rapid Industrialization

Download or read book Making Of An Economic Superpower The Unlocking China s Secret Of Rapid Industrialization written by Yi Wen and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of China is no doubt one of the most important events in world economic history since the Industrial Revolution. Mainstream economics, especially the institutional theory of economic development based on a dichotomy of extractive vs. inclusive political institutions, is highly inadequate in explaining China's rise. This book argues that only a radical reinterpretation of the history of the Industrial Revolution and the rise of the West (as incorrectly portrayed by the institutional theory) can fully explain China's growth miracle and why the determined rise of China is unstoppable despite its current 'backward' financial system and political institutions. Conversely, China's spectacular and rapid transformation from an impoverished agrarian society to a formidable industrial superpower sheds considerable light on the fundamental shortcomings of the institutional theory and mainstream 'blackboard' economic models, and provides more-accurate reevaluations of historical episodes such as Africa's enduring poverty trap despite radical political and economic reforms, Latin America's lost decades and frequent debt crises, 19th century Europe's great escape from the Malthusian trap, and the Industrial Revolution itself.

Download or read book Milk Craze written by Veronica S. W. Mak and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2021-02-28 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do the Chinese, who are mostly lactase non-persistent, suddenly thirst for milk today? Whether it is formula milk, fresh cow milk, or tea with condensed milk, the rocketing milk consumption and production in China are of increasing global food safety, health, and environmental concerns. Milk Craze examines and compares developments in China's dairy industry and dietary dairy consumption, cross-nationally and globally, and more specifically in two localities: Shunde and Hong Kong. Through an innovative analysis of medical texts and social media, as well as careful ethnographic studies, Veronica Mak ponders why the surge in demand for Western cow milk coincides with the plunge in sales of indigenous water-buffalo milk and cheese. She reveals the multiple ways in which global industries and Chinese dairy conglomerates sabotage and destroy local dairy farms. She shows that the rise of milk consumption is not just about the globalization of cow milk production and Westernization of the Chinese diet, but also due to the crossovers between the traditional Chinese diet and medicine and modern global diets. She uses these reference points to explore the multiple meanings of dairy foods in China, such as the class and cultural attributes associated with British “milk tea” and flavored yogurt products, water buffalo curds and cheese, and the lower class associations of labor in the water-buffalo dairying industries, and then discusses these developments in China through colonial and modern global perspectives. Milk Craze argues powerfully that the Westernization or dramatic change of diet in China too often obscures structural, educational, occupational, and social stresses and constraints, while naturalizing the dubious redefinition of health, cognitive performance, and ideal body shape as individual responsibility and imperative.

Book Food Safety Law in China

  • Pages : 620 pages

Download or read book Food Safety Law in China written by Francis Snyder and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first major study of the making of transnational food safety law in China. Francis Snyder shows how the 2008 melamine infant formula crisis led to China’s first food safety law and new food safety standards, substantial reforms in government policy and closer relations with international organisations. He also identifies current and future challenges and makes recommendations for dealing with them. Chinese food safety law today is influenced strongly by cross-border factors. While transnational regimes help to shape domestic decisions, many institutions deeply embedded in Chinese society have played key roles in this transformation. Francis Snyder emphasises that, in finding its own path toward ensuring food safety, China can both learn from and teach other countries. In May 2017 this title has been awarded a 'Gourmand World Cookbook Award' in Yantai, Shandong Province, China: 'Best in the World' in two categories: 'Best Wine Law Book' and 'Food Safety Institutions'.

Book Investment in Processing Industry Turns Chinese Apples Into Juice Exports

Download or read book Investment in Processing Industry Turns Chinese Apples Into Juice Exports written by Fred Gale and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a print on demand edition of a hard to find publication. Profiles the remarkable growth in China¿s apple juice concentrate exports since the 1990s and analyzes the factors behind the boom. Investment in the juice processing industry brought apples from China to the world market in the form of apple juice concentrate. The U.S. is the largest buyer, and concentrate from China now accounts for two-thirds of the U.S. apple juice supply. China¿s juice industry sustained its dramatic growth by expanding into the country¿s hinterland with support from officials eager to develop the poor northwestern region. In recent years, rising apple prices have begun to act as a brake on the industry¿s expansion, and the industry faces challenges in improving the quality of apples used for juice processing.
