Book excerpt: “This is a series of stories of what it looks like to walk with God, over the course of about a year.” So begins a remarkable narrative of one man’s journey learning to hear the voice of God. The details are intimate and personal. The invitation is for us all. What if we could hear from God . . . often? What difference would it make? We have a lot to sort through on any given day. A whole lot to navigate over the course of a week or a month. Am I in the right place? The right relationships? How am I going to come up with enough money to do the things I want to do? And what about love—is this the one? Will it last? What is causing all those fears I keep pushing down inside? Why can’t I overcome those “habits” that look more and more like addictions? Am I at the right church? Should I even go to church? What is God doing in my life? All day long we are making choices. It adds up to an enormous amount of decisions in a lifetime. How do we know what to do? We have two options. We can trudge through on our own, doing our best to figure it all out. Or, we can walk with God. As in, learn to hear his voice. Really. We can live life with God. He offers to speak to us and guide us. Every day. It is an incredible offer. To accept that offer is to enter into an adventure filled with joy and risk, transformation and breakthrough. And more clarity than we ever thought possible.

Book The Ransomed of God

Download or read book The Ransomed of God written by Harold Martin Troper and published by Raincoast Books. This book was released on 1999 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traces the involvement of Judy Feld Carr in rescuing Syrian Jews from persecution as hostages. Following pogroms in 1948, most of the Jews had fled from Syria, but ca. 5,000 remained. Those who then tried to escape were often imprisoned and tortured. Carr worked partly with the Canadian Jewish Congress, but mainly on her own, establishing contacts with Jews in Syria and with various governments (Canadian, American, and Israeli) that played more or less important roles at different stages of her 25 years of activity. Carr was instrumental in smuggling many Jews out of Syria (often through bribery) and in supplying material and moral support for the families of imprisoned Jews. In 1992 "the gates opened"; for geopolitical reasons, President Assad allowed Jewish emigration, then halted it, then allowed it again. Carr also used other means to rescue Syrian Jews, including political lobbying and influencing President Clinton to intercede with Assad to allow the Jews to emigrate.

His subsequent life experiences could be the plot of an exciting movie. His eventual knowledge of and walk with God has brought Praise to his God and caused many to trust in the Lord. Stewart shares important information toward the end of the book on major depression and suicide which will be helpful to many. Depression affects about 19 million Americans every year. I highly recommend this book." - George A. Hurst M. D., F.A.C.F. Director Emeritus The University of Texas Health Center at Tyler. "In answer to a feeble prayer, "God, forgive me," Stewart Whittemore was snatched out of the jaws of death. I have seen the impact this "Ransomed" one's testimony has made on others - here and abroad - who suffer from oppression." - Chris Josephson, Editor, Bible Light Publications-Ottawa, Kansas "Ransomed... is the compelling account of how a loving Father (God) rescues one man from the depths of overwhelming despair. You too like me will be overwhelmed as you witness a compassionate Father reconstruct, transform and restore this once physically, emotionally and spiritually shattered life. • Pages : 156 pages

Download or read book Ransom written by Dean H. Harvey and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2010-06 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover the truth about sin every Christian must know. If you think you understand sin, think again. RANSOM: The High Cost of Sin from Dean H. Harvey reframes this most important Christian concept for an eye-opening book that will change your relationship with God. Built on solid Scripture, Ransom shows how our self-centered focus on big sins-how they affect us in the here and now-is fundamentally misplaced. Rather, Harvey explains how the primary consequence of sin is to God-in the form of a broken heart. The secondary cost of sin is to the sinner-in his current life and the one to come. Third in line are those around us, who are all affected by our sins in some way. And finally, the highest cost of sin is that it emptied Heaven of its best to provide a ransom on the cross-in order to bring "so great salvation to all sinners who would repent and turn from sin. Straightforward and easy to understand, Ransom is a must read for anyone looking to more fully understand the bible and its remarkable insight for living a Christian life. "The author admonishes the reader to live each day to bring joy, and not grief, to the heart of God, who loves us and gave Himself for a sin-offering as a fulfillment of the Old Testament sacrifices." -George (Jed) Smock, Campus Ministries USA "It is my humble opinion that there is a high cost that comes with failing to understand the powerful truth contained in the pages of this book." -Michail E. Wolfe, President of Common Clay Ministries, Inc.: And Director of Ambassador Training International _____________________________________________________________________________ Dean Harvey was in full-time ministry for 37 years before retiring. Harvey, a Navy veteran, lives with his wife Shirley in Palm Desert, California.

Book A Sweet and Bitter Providence

Download or read book A Sweet and Bitter Providence written by John Piper and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2009-12-21 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sex. Race. Scripture. Sovereignty. The book of Ruth entails them all. So readers shouldn't be fooled by its age, says Pastor John Piper. Though its events happened over 3,000 years ago, the story holds astounding relevance for Christians in the twenty-first century. The sovereignty of God, the sexual nature of humanity, and the gospel of God's mercy for the undeserving-these massive realities never change. And since God is still sovereign, and we are male or female, and Jesus is alive and powerful, A Sweet and Bitter Providence bears a message for readers from all walks of life. But be warned, Piper tells his audience: This ancient love affair between Boaz and Ruth could be dangerous, inspiring all of us to great risks in the cause of love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Choice Outstanding Academic Title of the Year A Tablet Book of the Year Marking a departure in our understanding of Christian views of the afterlife from 250 to 650 CE, The Ransom of the Soul explores a revolutionary shift in thinking about the fate of the soul that occurred around the time of Rome’s fall. Peter Brown describes how this shift transformed the Church’s institutional relationship to money and set the stage for its domination of medieval society in the West. “[An] extraordinary new book...Prodigiously original—an astonishing performance for a historian who has already been so prolific and influential...Peter Brown’s subtle and incisive tracking of the role of money in Christian attitudes toward the afterlife not only breaks down traditional geographical and chronological boundaries across more than four centuries. It provides wholly new perspectives on Christianity itself, its evolution, and, above all, its discontinuities. It demonstrates why the Middle Ages, when they finally arrived, were so very different from late antiquity.” —G. W. Bowersock, New York Review of Books “Peter Brown’s explorations of the mindsets of late antiquity have been educating us for nearly half a century...Brown shows brilliantly in this book how the future life of Christians beyond the grave was influenced in particular by money. —A. N. Wilson, The Spectator

Book excerpt: In an age when fathers are more important than ever, how do you embark on your journey to manhood and know how to steer clear of the dangers along the way? In Fathered by God, New York Times bestselling author John Eldredge reminds us that there's a path to masculinity and, best of all, there's a loving Father ready to help us follow it. In Fathered by God, Eldredge calls men back to a simple and reassuring truth: God is our Father, and he wants to show us what masculinity really means. Eldredge teaches us that there's a path leading to authentic manhood, cut by generation after generation of men. There are perils along the trail, even disasters--all the more reason to rely on the guidance of a Father who has gone before us. A boy has a lot to learn in his journey to becoming a man, and it takes the active intervention of father figures and the fellowship of other men to guide us along the way. Eldredge shares that in all of life's trials and triumphs, God is initiating boys and men through the stages of manhood. Through personal stories and practical guidance, Eldredge provides a map through the six stages of a man's journey and answers some of the most common questions about manhood that he's received over the years, including: How can I set a good example for my son? What does the Bible teach us about masculinity? How can I become the man that God designed me to be? Fathered by God maps out the path of manhood--not more rules, not another list of principles, not formulas, but a well-worn path that men have followed for centuries before us. Discover the truth about masculinity and become the man that God sees in you.

Book Gospel Wakefulness Foreword by Ray Ortlund

Download or read book Gospel Wakefulness Foreword by Ray Ortlund written by Jared C. Wilson and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2011-10-06 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We may know the gospel. We may believe it—even proclaim it. But we also may assume the gospel and become lethargic. In this book Jared Wilson seeks to answer the central question, how do we experience and present the gospel in a fresh, nonroutine way in order to prevent ourselves and others from becoming numb? His answer may be surprising: "by routinely presenting the unchanging gospel in a way that does justice to its earth-shaking announcement." We don't excite and awaken people to the glorious truths of the gospel by spicing up our worship services or through cutting-edge, dramatic rhetoric, but by passionately and faithfully proclaiming the same truths we have already been given in Scripture. Wilson's book will stir churches to live out the power of the gospel with a fervent, genuine zeal. After an explanation of the term "gospel wakefulness," Wilson unpacks implications for worship, hyper-spirituality, godly habits, and sanctification, as well as other aspects of church life. Pastors, church leaders, and all in ministry, especially those who are tired or discouraged, will be uplifted, emboldened, and empowered by this book.

Book Ransomed Redeemed and Forgiven

Download or read book Ransomed Redeemed and Forgiven written by David H. McIlroy and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-07-05 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Images connected to money are found frequently in the Bible and in the hymns and songs Christians sing. The ideas of ransom, redemption, and forgiveness are a key part of how the work of Jesus on the cross is described. But what do the pictures of ransom, redemption, and forgiveness actually mean? How would they have been understood by the first hearers of the gospel? How do they link to kidnapping, slavery, and debt? Using practical examples from his experience as a banking lawyer and from history, David McIlroy shows how power, money, and sin combine to trap us, leaving us in desperate need of a redeemer to rescue us. This book will deepen your understanding of Jesus's death, enrich your worship, and inspire you to share and demonstrate the transformative power of the salvation achieved through the cross and resurrection.
