This book provides an unprecedented synthesis of the current status of scientific and management knowledge regarding global rangelands and the major challenges that confront them. It has been organized around three major themes. The first summarizes the conceptual advances that have occurred in the rangeland profession. The second addresses the implications of these conceptual advances to management and policy. The third assesses several major challenges confronting global rangelands in the 21st century. This book will compliment applied range management textbooks by describing the conceptual foundation on which the rangeland profession is based. It has been written to be accessible to a broad audience, including ecosystem managers, educators, students and policy makers. The content is founded on the collective experience, knowledge and commitment of 80 authors who have worked in rangelands throughout the world. Their collective contributions indicate that a more comprehensive framework is necessary to address the complex challenges confronting global rangelands. Rangelands represent adaptive social-ecological systems, in which societal values, organizations and capacities are of equal importance to, and interact with, those of ecological processes. A more comprehensive framework for rangeland systems may enable management agencies, and educational, research and policy making organizations to more effectively assess complex problems and develop appropriate solutions.

Chapters give an overview of the state of forest and rangeland soils research in the Nation, including multi-decadal programs (chapter 1), then summarizes various human-caused and natural impacts and their effects on soil carbon, hydrology, biogeochemistry, and biological diversity (chapters 2–5). Other chapters look at the effects of changing conditions on forest soils in wetland and urban settings (chapters 6–7). Impacts include: climate change, severe wildfires, invasive species, pests and diseases, pollution, and land use change. Chapter 8 considers approaches to maintaining or regaining forest and rangeland soil health in the face of these varied impacts. Mapping, monitoring, and data sharing are discussed in chapter 9 as ways to leverage scientific and human resources to address soil health at scales from the landscape to the individual parcel (monitoring networks, data sharing Web sites, and educational soils-centered programs are tabulated in appendix B). Chapter 10 highlights opportunities for deepening our understanding of soils and for sustaining long-term ecosystem health and appendix C summarizes research needs. Nine regional summaries (appendix A) offer a more detailed look at forest and rangeland soils in the United States and its Affiliates.

Animals were lost, much range was irreversible damaged, and even violence occurred as cowmen, sheepmen, and settlers competed for the best forage. Congress intervened by designating the U.S. Forest Service as the pioneer grazing control agency. The Forest Service's controls represent not only attempts to protect a resource but also a social experiment designed to prevent the monopolization of rangelands by large outfits and to encourage small enterprises. The Forest Service has become the undisputed leader in bringing order, rationality, and economic use to the range resources under government supervision. Additionally, on a global scale, China has around one-eighth of the rangelands (the second largest area of land in any country other than Australia). These rangelands are mostly inhabited by peoples of various ethnic minorities. This book provides an overview of the environment and current development trends in the pastoral regions including a glimpse of the people affected most by any conservation or development effort and provide a framework for future integrated conservation and development work in the pastoral regions of north and north-west China. Furthermore, land degradation and biodiversity loss are the most critical issues of ecological environmenti n the West of China and they are the main causes for poverty and constraints for economic development. This book examines rangeland degradation in China as well as rangeland management and livestock production in an effort to arrest and reverse rangeland degradation. In other chapters, changes in vegetation related with grazing are reviewed, the benefits of reintegrating burrowing bettongs as a part of rangeland restoration programs, and integrating national feral camel management plans that are being implemented across the camel range in Australia, aiming to control the damage caused by camels (there are around 750,000 feral camels in arid and semi-arid rangelands in Australia).

Locally the effects of careless utili zation of the land and its resources had been felt long ago. It is, however, only relatively recently that the gravity of the situation is being generally and fully realised. It is now well understood that action is required to save what is left and possibly to restore what was once there. Such action requires organization and coordination, but above all knowledge of the present state of the resources and the impact of utilization processes. Part of this knowledge is already available. The problems are not confined to this part of the world's arid lands, but exist equally well elsewhere. Especially over the last decades an ever increasing number of studies have been published dealing with aspects of arid zone research.
