Download or read book The Naked Corporation written by Don Tapscott and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2003-10-07 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to the world of the naked corporation. Transparency is revolutionizing every aspect of our economy and its industries and forcing firms to rethink their fundamental values. We are in an extraordinary age where businesses must make themselves clearly visible to shareholders, customers, employees, partners, and society. Financial data, employee grievances, internal memos, environmental disasters, product weaknesses, international protests, scandals and policies, good news and bad; all can be seen by anyone who knows where to look. Don Tapscott, bestselling author and one of the most sought after strategists and speakers in the business world, is famous for seeing into the future and pointing out both its forest and its trees. David Ticoll, visionary researcher, columnist, and consultant, has identified countless breakthrough trends at the intersection of technology and business strategy. These two longtime collaborators now offer a brilliant guide to the new age of openness. In The Naked Corporation, they explain how the new transparency has caused a power shift toward customers, employees, shareholders, and other stakeholders; how and where information has exploded; and how corporations across many industries have seized on transparency not as a challenge but as an opportunity. Drawing on such examples as Shell Oil’s reinvention of itself as an environmentally focused business, to Johnson & Johnson’s longstanding and carefully nurtured reputation as a company worthy of trust—as well as little-known examples from pharmaceuticals, insurance, high technology, and financial services—Tapscott and Ticoll offer invaluable advice on how to lead the new age, rather than simply react to it. The Naked Corporation is a book for managers, employees, investors, customers, and anyone who cares about the future of the corporation and society.

Download or read book Company Towns written by Neil White and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2012-05-07 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Company towns are often portrayed as powerless communities, fundamentally dependent on the outside influence of global capital. Neil White challenges this interpretation by exploring how these communities were altered at the local level through human agency, missteps, and chance. Far from being homogeneous, these company towns are shown to be unique communities with equally unique histories. Company Towns provides a multi-layered, international comparison between the development of two settlements—the mining community of Mount Isa, Queensland, Australia, and the mill town of Corner Brook, Newfoundland, Canada. White pinpoints crucial differences between the towns' experiences by contrasting each region's histories from various perspectives—business, urban, labour, civic, and socio-cultural. Company Towns also makes use of a sizable collection of previously neglected oral history sources and town records, providing an illuminating portrait of divergence that defies efforts to impose structure on the company town phenomenon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of twentieth-century America’s most politically influential novels, The Jungle is Upton Sinclair’s hard-hitting exposé of the meat-packing industry. Journalist and novelist Upton Sinclair was a known muckraker who used his work to expose the horrific underbelly of the American government in the early 1900s. The Jungle is the fictional story of Jurgis Rudkus and his wife, Ona Lukoszaite. The couple immigrated to Chicago from Lithuania in the hopes of living the American Dream. Instead, they are met by the hardship and tragedy that awaited so many immigrants at the time. Jurgis secures a job in the meat-packing industry and quickly realises the disgusting treatment of animals and the horrendous working conditions that led to many injuries and deaths. Prior to writing the powerful novel, Sinclair spent seven weeks working in the Chicago meat-packing industry. He used his research to expose the corrupt factories in his writing. Originally published in serial form in 1905 for Appeal to Reason, the socialist newspaper, The Jungle was published as a book in 1906. The novel caused such public outcry that Sinclair’s work played a large part in the introduction of the 1906 Meat Inspection Act in the US. Read & Co. Classics has proudly republished this volume for the enjoyment of fans of socialist literature and those interested in the history of America’s meat industry.
