The Fortymile, near the boundary, the Birch Creek, and the Rampart regions are adjacent to the Yukon at intervals of about 140 miles westward from the boundary. The Fairbanks region, the most recently developed and at the present time the most productive, is in Tanana Valley about 12 miles north of the river and about 260 miles from its mouth The Rampart region is about 80 miles northwest of the Fairbanks region, and all the creeks of present economic impor tance are within 30 miles of the Yukon and belong to the drainage systems of both Yukon and Tanana rivers. The dis covery of placer gold on Fortymile in 1886, and the later discoveries in 1893 in the Birch Creek and Rampart regions, led to a rapid development of the creeks tributary to the Yukon. During the sum mer of 1902 placer gold was found in quantities of economic impor tance about 200 miles above the mouth of the Tanana and a few miles north of the river. This led to an influx of people and the formation of a center of population on the Tanana side of the area. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Juneau Gold Belt, Alaska, And, a Reconnaissance of Admiralty Island, Alaska Systematic investigation of the mineral resources of Alaska by the United States Geolog ical Survey began in 1898. Much of the region being practically unknown, explorations and general reconnaissances had first to be made, and it was not until 1902 that the demand for general information concerning different portions of the Territory was sufficiently satisfied to permit making plans for detailed investigations similar to those in progress in the States. In the summer of 1902 Mr. W. J. Peters was detailed to make a topographic map of the vicinity of Juneau, and in 1w3 Mr. Arthur C. Spencer, assisted by Mr. Charles W. Wright, took up the study of the geologic formations and the ore deposits of the region. In addition to the investigation of the area covered by the detailed map, a geologic reconnaissance was made of the accessible portions of the mainland from Port Houghton northward to the head of Chilkat River, and all the important mining camps of the belt were visited. Unpublished topographic maps prepared by the Canadian Boundary Commission were available and facilitated the plotting of the general distribution of the rocks throughout the belt traversed. The present report upon the work of this field season is accompanied by topographic and geologic maps of the vicinity of Juneau, and of a mainland strip extending approximately zi) miles along the coast. A topographic map of Admiralty Island has been compiled by Mr. Wright, and studies pursued by him during the summer of 1904 form the basis of the geologic map of this large island. A description of the Porcupine placer district by Mr. Wright has been issued by the Survey 0, and preliminary papers upon the general region and upon the Treadwell mines have been published by the writer. Acknowledgment is due the mining fraternity of the region for many courtesies, and the writer is especially indebted to the management of the Treadwell mines for facilities extended during the examination of these properties, and to Mr. William Ebner, of Juneau, for cooperation and historical data. A mill site of 335 acres on the shores of the Gastineau Channel was acquired, the preliminary work for the erection of a mill Of tons daily capacity was begun, the construction of a power development scheme, including the building of a 165-foot dam to furnish h. P. For both mine and mill was started, while at the mine general development plan was inaugurated, including the sinking of a main vertical shaft and two auxiliary working shafts on the dip of the vein, the running of numerous drifts and cross-cuts, and, particularly, the driv ing of a tunnel more than two miles in length to serve as a main extraction way and permit the continuous transportation of ores direct to the mill by electric trains as well as the economical delivery of supplies to the mine. At all points the plans were laid out with an eye to the ultimate treatment of a tonnage far in excess of the initial installation of tons.
