Download or read book THE RAMPAGING SAFFRON written by ARUN MURUGESAN and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2020-02-24 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India is at the crossroads. Never before in its 70 years of independence, has the idea of peaceful coexistence been under a severe threat. The last decade or so has seen the spectacular or rather, an alarming rise of the Indian right, spearheaded by the RSS. The group, apart from the shakeup it has created to the volatile political landscape, has also mesmerised a large number of young Indians towards a false narrative of nationalism based on majoritarianism. Unless the Indians, young and old, many of whom are abetting a majoritarian mindset, exhibit an intellectual honesty, the idea of a shining India shall soon give way to a shrieking India.
Download or read book Communalism and Sexual Violence in India written by Megha Kumar and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-06-16 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexual violence has been a regular feature of communal conflict in India since independence in 1947. The Partition riots, which saw the brutal victimization of thousands of Hindu, Muslim and Sikh women, have so far dominated academic discussions of communal violence. This book examines the specific conditions motivating sexual crimes against women based on three of the deadliest riots that occurred in Ahmedabad city, Gujarat, in 1969, 1985 and 2002. Using an in-depth, grassroots-level analysis, Megha Kumar moves away from the predominant academic view that sees Hindu nationalist ideology as responsible for encouraging attacks on women. Instead, gendered communal violence is shown to be governed by the interaction of an elite ideology and the unique economic, social and political dynamics at work in each instance of conflict. Using government reports, Hindu nationalist publications and civil society commentaries, as well as interviews with activists, politicians and riot survivors, the book offers new insights into the factors and ideologies involved in communal violence, as well as the conditions that work to prevent sexual violence in certain riot contexts. The Politics of Sexual Violence in India will be valuable for academic researchers, Human Rights organizations, NGOs working with survivors of sexual violence and for those involved with community development and urban grassroots activism.

Download or read book Pogrom in Gujarat written by Parvis Ghassem-Fachandi and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2012-04-08 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2002, after an altercation between Muslim vendors and Hindu travelers at a railway station in the Indian state of Gujarat, fifty-nine Hindu pilgrims were burned to death. The ruling nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party blamed Gujarat's entire Muslim minority for the tragedy and incited fellow Hindus to exact revenge. The resulting violence left more than one thousand people dead--most of them Muslims--and tens of thousands more displaced from their homes. Parvis Ghassem-Fachandi witnessed the bloodshed up close. In Pogrom in Gujarat, he provides a riveting ethnographic account of collective violence in which the doctrine of ahimsa--or nonviolence--and the closely associated practices of vegetarianism became implicated by legitimating what they formally disavow. Ghassem-Fachandi looks at how newspapers, movies, and other media helped to fuel the pogrom. He shows how the vegetarian sensibilities of Hindus and the language of sacrifice were manipulated to provoke disgust against Muslims and mobilize the aspiring middle classes across caste and class differences in the name of Hindu nationalism. Drawing on his intimate knowledge of Gujarat's culture and politics and the close ties he shared with some of the pogrom's sympathizers, Ghassem-Fachandi offers a strikingly original interpretation of the different ways in which Hindu proponents of ahimsa became complicit in the very violence they claimed to renounce.
Download or read book The Saffron Storm written by Saba Naqvi and published by Penguin Random House India Private Limited. This book was released on 2024-02-15 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) enjoys a predominant position in Indian politics today. In its journey from coalition to single-party rule, the BJP has changed as much as India appears to have. Veteran journalist Saba Naqvi tells the story of the party’s journey under two very different prime ministers drawn from the same ideological family. In 1998, the author attended the very modest swearing-in ceremony of Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the courtyard of the Rashtrapati Bhavan. In 2014, she was at a mega event at the same venue when Narendra Modi was sworn in. The Saffron Storm is both a first-person account of racy events as they unfolded in the nation’s history and a work that raises larger analytical points about the BJP’s growth. It examines the role of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh cadre and its equations with elected leaders, the calibration of ideology, the issue of political finance and the social expansion of the party, as also the cults of personality that would emerge around, first, Vajpayee and then, more forcefully, around Modi. The book provides a riveting account of the party’s journey from ‘untouchability’ (when allies were unwilling to join) to its presumed ‘invincibility’ today. This updated edition also describes the enforcement agencies’ action against the party’s opponents, the increasingly centralized command structure of the BJP and the implications of the delimitation exercise due in 2026. The Saffron Storm is a fascinating and readable dive into the contemporary history of the BJP.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning from 1946 during British colonization to 2023's era of 'economic colonization,' 'Backlash to Today' is a unique historical anthology interwoven with the author's life. It intricately portrays nine decades, capturing the essence of each era through lifestyles, fashion, dance, and music while chronicling significant global and Indian occurrences—disasters, terrorism, assassinations, crimes, deaths, wars, and civil disturbances. Beyond a mere reflection, the book offers a broader philosophical perspective. The author foresees humanity's imminent demise due to irreparable climate change, power-hungry leaders, terrorism causing global instability with economic collapse, the looming specter of nuclear annihilation, and the dread of an untreatable pandemic. It aspires to impart a glimpse of these nine decades to future inheritors of the Earth, whether human or alien. This ambitious work aims to serve as a time capsule akin to the profound significance of the Dead Sea Scrolls, providing a visceral understanding of the times lived and the looming challenges facing humanity.
Download or read book Scarred written by Dionne Bunsha and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did it really start with the burning of a train? Scarred: Experiments with Violence in Gujarat asserts the existence of a much larger politics of violence, and tells the story of a disaster in Hindutva’s laboratory which etched deep faults in Gujarat’s social landscape. While capturing the predicament of the Sabarmati Express survivors, Scarred is an intense, moving portrait of refugees whose lives have been changed forever by the violence that followed. It tells the story of people fighting for justice amidst fear and turmoil, unable to return home. It is also an insightful look into the minds of the perpetrators of this violence, and the world they seek to construct—a world where the ghettoization and socio-economic boycott of Muslims have become the norm. What exactly happened in Gujarat in February 2002? Why did the country’s political leaders fiddle while Gandhi’s Gujarat burned? In this honest and thought-provoking book, Dionne Bunsha tries to answer these and many of the questions that we are still left with.
