Book The Rambler Vol 4

Download or read book The Rambler Vol 4 written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rambler, Vol. 4: Seu Vetus Est Verum Diligo Sive Novum Men and nations that believe in a supreme moral Ruler of the world hold this distinction in reverence, and do not think it allowable to transgress moral principles for the acquisition of any end, however tempting, nor to do evil that good may come. They may transgress this law often enough, but they will never maintain that they are right in transgressing it. But men who have no faith in a moral Governor of the world, and the schools of anarchy, democracy, or Caesarism which they found, hold the distinction to be not only worthless, but false, foolish, and mischievous. They hold it to be a mere superstition to be scrupulous about the means when the utility of the object aimed at is once acknowledged; and they unblushingly avow the "sovereignty of the end" to be the only pole-star of their compass. This is the motto of the revolution; the principles of revolutionary Caesarism are precisely the same, though they are expressed differently. Napoleon at St. Helena contrasted his empire with the old Christian monarchies of Europe: "They never suspected that my monarchy was essentially different from theirs. Mine was altogether in the sphere of facts, theirs altogether in that of right; theirs was founded upon habit, mine disregarded it; mine marched with the genius of the age, theirs hauled upon the ropes to hold it back." The imperialism of Napoleon III. has gone a step further; it raises facts not only above right, but above reason also; and not only is blame rendered nugatory, but the most convincing arguments collapse when they are tried by the new touchstone, the "logic of facts." The moral and mental civilisation which nearly two thousand years of Christianity have conquered for Europe is in danger; and both reason and right are now invited to bow their heads before the golden calf of brute force or of accident. Not that Christians question tho "sovereignty of the end" when the expression is only used to remind them that they must suffer with patience and resignation, if not with joy, whatever God ordains or permits. But the end is only sovereign to them after it has passed into the sphere of facts. They recognise that "whatever is is right," but do not thereby acknowledge that every body is right in doing whatever ho does. Download or read book The Rambler 1855 Vol 4 written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rambler, 1855, Vol. 4: A Catholic Journal and Review We are acquainted with a certain family, whose members, though they occasionally squabble about minor matters, are remarkably well agreed on all important things, and distinguished by an entire satisfaction with the fundamental state of their domestic affairs. Father and mother, sisters and brothers, servants in-doors and out-of-doors, are unanimous in the opinion that no such happy and united a household is to be found elsewhere on the face of the earth. They love each other, and admire each other, and (making due allowance for human infirmities) are perfectly contented with the manner in which each member of the family fulfils his or her duties to the remainder of those who live in the same house. Moreover, they consider that this very house, with all its appurtenances, is absolutely unrivalled in suitability to the wishes and needs of its inmates. It is warm, comfortable, airy, healthy, handsome, well-furnished, gracefully decorated, and neither too big nor too little. There is plenty to eat and drink, of a wholesome and nutritious kind, and suited to the different constitutions of the different members of the family. The gardens and grounds are delightful; and, in fact, on the whole, the household looks upon itself as favoured by Divine Providence in a wonderful degree, is never tired of thanking God for its possessions, and is always wishing that every body else was equally well off. But the oddest thing in the world is, that when the various members of the family go out of doors - nay, sometimes even, when they receive company at home - they are perpetually told that they are miserable, wretched, quarrelsome, enslaved, degraded, ignorant, immoral, hypocritical, bloody-minded, deceitful, and regardless of the Divine Giver of all their blessings. Download or read book The Rambler Vol 5 Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rambler, Vol. 5 We need not say, therefore, that we have seen without pain the demonstrations hostile to the present government made on a remarkable and critical occasion last year, and continued during the present session, by many of the most influential and most sincerely liberal Catholics in the House of Commons; and, much as we should regret to see the Tory party restored to power, we consider, upon the whole, that their temporary occupancy of the Treasury benches would be a lesser evil than the tame submission of an influential portion of the liberal party to insult and to ostracism. Thus much, to prevent any misconception of our views, we have thought it necessary to say, by way of preface to the question which we now propose to discuss. We should rejoice to see the Catholics of these kingdoms acting, as they used to act, in combination with that party which upon the whole is most prepared to give effect to the principles involved in the passing of the Emancipation Act; and just in proportion as we should object to their being leagued together in a separate faction, is our desire that, in the difficult times on which we are now entering, their influence should not be frittered away by any difference of opinion as to which party most demands their independent allegiance. In times such as these united and energetic action is necessary. In the face of the events which in rapid succession are subverting the ancient European system, those miserable quarrels and petty piques which have divided us ought to be forgotten. At best we are a minority, weak in numbers, weaker in influence; a minority that was called into political existence only thirty years ago. We are always in the face of active and unsleeping as well as unscrupulous foes. Forgetful of the lessons which the history of 1800 years teaches, for the hundredth time the song of triumph is raised, and they begin to ring again the knell of the old faith. The remainder of the winter of 1832-33, - for the prolongation of the tour of which I have assuredly given you sufficient details, had cut a month off that season, - was spent most agreeably in New York and Baltimore, with an occasional visit to Washington and Philadelphia. I might here appropriately hazard a few observations with reference to the chief characteristics of that society to which we had been introduced at our first visit, and had now a better opportunity of becoming acquainted with; but I defer them till a brighter day. Xone of the desires dictated by vanity is more general, or less blameable, than that of being distinguished for the arts of conversation. Other accomplishments may be possessed without opportunity of exerting them, or wanted without danger that the effect can often be remarked; but as no man can live otherwise than in an hermitage, without hourly pleasure or vexation, from the fondness or neglect of those about him, the faculty of giving pleasure is of continual use. Few are more frequently envied than those who have the power of forcing attention wherever they come, whose entrance is considered as a promise of felicity, and whose departure is lamented, like the recess of the sun from northern climates, as a privation of all that enlivens fancy or inspirits gaiety. It is apparent, that to excellence in this valuable art, some peculiar qualifications are necessary; for every ie*s experience will inform him, that the pleasure which men are able t6 give in conversation, holds.03 stated proportion to their knowledge or their virtue. Many find their way to the tables and the parties of those who never consider them as of the least importance in any other place; we have all, at one time or other, been content to love those whom we could not esteem, and been persuaded to try the dangerous experiment of admitting him for a companion whom we knew to be too ignorant for a counsellor, and too treacherous for a friend. .
