Book The 5 Skinny Habits

Download or read book The 5 Skinny Habits written by David Zulberg and published by Rodale. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his own personal weight-loss struggle, David Zulberg turned to the forgotten wisdom of Maimonides, a medieval Jewish expert on philosophical subjects, to find consensus on ideal nutrition and optimum physical and emotional health. After 10 years of studying volume upon volume, Zulberg was able to distill the teachings of the bible and humanity's greatest doctors, and he discovered something amazing--ancient doctors already knew what today's medical findings are rediscovering about what's best for human health, weight loss, disease prevention, and psychological well-being. The 5 Skinny Habits explains the ancient understanding of health and its application to our lives in the 21st century and its supersize proportions. Zulberg refers to legendary thinkers as Master Physicians and, through a close study of Maimonides, integrates the spiritual, emotional, and physical components of health and weight loss. With an easy five-step plan, Zulberg tells readers how to incorporate one habit each week for 5 weeks to achieve a healthier lifestyle. His five steps streamline and simplify the process of becoming fit, ensuring that change is made for good. As readers are gradually led through the plan, they become more accustomed to living as prescribed by the ancient health experts. A simple diet diary with positive affirmations makes self-monitoring an effective and enjoyable part of the discovery. By the end of the journey, readers have incorporated the habits into their routines so completely that they are no longer "dieting" but simply living a healthier life.

Book Maimonides Metabolism

  • Author : Rabbi Yonason Herschlag
  • Publisher : CreateSpace
  • Release : 2015-06-12
  • ISBN : 9781508968634
  • Pages : 314 pages

Download or read book Maimonides Metabolism written by Rabbi Yonason Herschlag and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today there is a debate raging amongst nutritional authorities concerning the timing of breakfast. Some argue that in order to avoid sugar lows and uncontrollable hunger one should eat breakfast shortly after awakening. Others promote the extension of the nightly fast by delaying breakfast, and thereby attaining the metabolic advantages and improved insulin sensitivity of intermittent fasting. Maimonides & Metabolism explains in depth the physiological processes that are overlooked by many mainstream nutritional authorities, such as the fact that a person who is accustomed to eating a late breakfast won't suffer sugar lows because the hormone cortisol is at its daily peak half an hour after waking up in the morning, and cortisol boosts blood sugar levels. In fact, since cortisol raises blood sugar (the opposite of insulin which lowers it) eating a breakfast that includes carbohydrates (even low GI carbs) will make it impossible to keep the blood sugar from going too high, as the high levels of cortisol won't allow the insulin to lower the blood sugar to balanced levels. That leads to hyperinsulinemia (too much insulin). And simultaneous high levels of cortisol and insulin cause the body to increase the number of fat cells. Hyperinsulinemia also directs the body to store fat, and blocks the body from using stored fat for energy. Maimonides & Metabolism delves into the timing of meals, habituating ourselves to the most effective strategies of daily intermittent fasting that alleviates hunger and puts us into the natural fat burning mode. Several chapters go into great detail on macronutrients to arm dieters and dietitians with the understanding needed for long-term fat-loss. It includes hundreds of cutting edge studies backing up the recommendations of Maimonides and the Talmud, as well as the best proven short-term and long-term dieting methods for fat-loss and improved health. Health professionals are recommending this book to their colleagues and patients for its amazing array of insights and solutions.

Book Rupture and Reconstruction

Download or read book Rupture and Reconstruction written by Haym Soloveitchik and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-10 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essay that forms the core of this book is an attempt to understand the developments that have occurred in Orthodox Jewry in America in the last seventy years, and to analyse their implications. The prime change is what is often described as ‘the swing to the right’, a marked increase in ritual stringency, a rupture in patterns of behaviour that has had major consequences not only for Jewish society but also for the nature of Jewish spirituality. For Haym Soloveitchik, the key feature at the root of this change is that, as a result of migration to the ‘New Worlds’ of England, the US, and Israel and acculturation to its new surroundings, American Jewry—indeed, much of the Jewish world— had to reconstruct religious practice from normative texts: observance could no longer be transmitted mimetically, on the basis of practices observed in home and street. In consequence, behaviour once governed by habit is now governed by rule. This new edition allows the author to deal with criticisms raised since the essay, long established as a classic in the field, was originally published, and enables readers to gain a fuller perspective on a topic central to today’s Jewish world and its development.

Book excerpt: Fully updated and revised, the second edition of Integrative Nursing is a complete roadmap to integrative patient care, providing a guide to whole person/whole systems assessment and clinical interventions for individuals, families, and communities. Treatment strategies described in this version employ the full complement of evidence-informed methodologies in a tailored, person-centered approach to care. This text explores concepts, skills, and theoretical frameworks that can be used by healthcare leaders interested in creating and implementing an integrative model of care within institutions and systems, featuring exemplar nurse-led initiatives that have transformed healthcare systems. This volume covers the foundations of the field; the most effective ways to optimize wellbeing; principles of symptom management for many common disorders like sleep, anxiety, pain, and cognitive impairment; the application of integrative nursing techniques in a variety of clinical settings and among a diverse patient population; and integrative practices around the world and how it impacts planetary health. The academic rigor of the text is balanced by practical and relevant content that can be readily implemented into practice for both established professionals as well as students enrolled in undergraduate or graduate nursing programs. Integrative medicine is defined as healing-oriented medicine that takes account of the whole person (body, mind, and spirit) as well as all aspects of lifestyle; it emphasizes the therapeutic relationship and makes use of appropriate therapies, both conventional and alternative. Series editor Andrew Weil, MD, is Professor and Director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona. Dr. Weil's program was the first such academic program in the U.S., and its stated goal is "to combine the best ideas and practices of conventional and alternative medicine into cost effective treatments without embracing alternative practices uncritically."
