Book excerpt: The definitive English translation of the classic Sanskrit epic poem—now available in a one-volume paperback The Rāmāyaṇa of Vālmīki, the monumental Sanskrit epic of the life of Rama, ideal man and incarnation of the great god Visnu, has profoundly affected the literature, art, religions, and cultures of South and Southeast Asia from antiquity to the present. Filled with thrilling battles, flying monkeys, and ten-headed demons, the work, composed almost 3,000 years ago, recounts Prince Rama’s exile and his odyssey to recover his abducted wife, Sita, and establish a utopian kingdom. Now, the definitive English translation of the critical edition of this classic is available in a single volume. Based on the authoritative seven-volume translation edited by Robert Goldman and Sally Sutherland Goldman, this volume presents the unabridged translated text in contemporary English, revised and reformatted into paragraph form. The book includes a new introduction providing important historical and literary contexts, as well as a glossary, pronunciation guide, and index. Ideal for students and general readers, this edition of the Rāmāyaṇa of Vālmīki introduces an extraordinary work of world literature to a new generation of readers.

Book Kamba Ramayana

Download or read book Kamba Ramayana written by P S Sundaram and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2002-05-03 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A masterly translation of the Tamil version of Ramayana The epic story of Rama, which is part of the Indian collective consciousness, has been retold in many regional languages. Pre-eminent among the many vernacular retellings of the Ramayana is the twelfth-century Tamil version by Kamban. The son of a temple drummer, Kamban is reputed to have had an impressive mastery of Tamil and Sanskrit classics. Fascinated by the lore of Ramayana, he immersed himself totally in it. Though Kamban acknowledges his indebtedness to the Sanskrit version of the Ramayana by Valmiki, his is an independent work, enriched by various religious, philosophical and literary influences. The Kamba Ramayana differs from Valmiki’s in significant ways. Though cast in the heroic mould of a Purushotama or ‘the best among men’, Valmiki’s Rama is still a man. Kamban, on the other hand, never allows the reader to forget the godhood of Rama. His Ravana too, though flawed, is a heroic figure. While Valmiki’s diction is sparse and direct, Kamban’s exuberant prose sparkles with wit and inventiveness. Translated into English by the late P.S. Sundaram, this edition has been abridged and edited by his long-time friend N.S. Jagannathan. Though pared down from the original six volumes to a single one, this translation retains the magic and poetry of the original.

Book excerpt: This is an abridged verse translation of the two longest epic poems in world literature, the Ramayana and Mahabharata. This translation is surprisingly readable and very moving once you get used to the rhymed couplet format. This also serves as an ideal introduction to the sprawling plots of these epic tales." A transcendental epic tragedy of Divine sorts. A Ramayana book story with as much beauty and poetry as philosophy and truths.each character and situation reflects different things in both the spiritual realm as in our human condition. Decisions, consequences, tragedy, nobility of spirit, height of thought, duty and unflinching righteousness. It is as well a "fantastic" story, with things that can happen only in spiritual manifestations of the spiritual realm, such as flying giant monkeys which think and talk, flying mountains, a giant prehistoric world war, a sure entertaining and edifying epic."" Ralph T. H. Griffith has distilled the beautiful essence of the Ramayana, one of India's greatest epics, into a single, compelling volume. This is the story of Prince Rama's dedication to dharma -the responsibilities that fall to him as a result of his status as human and prince- in the face of incredible misfortune. It is also the story of what people are willing to do for those they love (witness Rama's war against the demons of Lanka to recuperate his wife Sita) and the tragic twists that can undermine that love (as when Rama exiles Sita to placate the suspicions of his subjects). For those who have never even heard of this epic, loved by millions in the Near East and East, Buck's soaring adaptation will be a real eye-opener. "" The ancient Indian epic, "ramayana valmiki ", is, as far as I know, one of Indian's most popular and loved epics, and it seems to have been composed around 500 to 750 BC, although there are many variations throughout the centuries. The gist of it is probably the same though. The one I am talking about here is just an audiobook translation by William Buck, and I say translation, but I actually mean a retelling. It is not in poetic form, it is retold in simple modern English narrative, which means that it is probably significantly different from the original, but I still assume that it has some grains of the original, for me to at least familiarize myself with the story. In short, very short, Rama is the son of a King and is actually the human form of a God (the God comes to Earth as a human form, but he forgets he is a God, this is way it always works). Something happens something happens, he is exiled, his beautiful wife, Sita, is stolen by a demon king, Ravana, and he needs to save her. Something something, epilogue. Here is the absolute fascinating thing about the epic ramayana english for me. If the story is written around 2,500 years back, we really have not progressed much, story-telling wise. Seriously, people always whine about how recent films are copying the classics from fifty or thirty years back, and Ramayana has the basis of a lot of epic films released nowadays. The main highlight for me in the epic, and the one that best illustrates this, is the main battle between Rama's army and the army of the demon king. This is almost Lord of the Ring.Rama is a powerful bowsman and there is part in the epic where he gets a really strong bow. He has a bad ass friend who is really strong. They befriend the races of monkeys and bears, having a few main characters in these races. And when they face the demon king, it is almost like it was written today. When he starts losing, he starts sending out strong characters one by one, and each one seems undefeatable at first, and Rama's army seems to be losing, but one character goes against him and wins, and then the next fighter. It was pretty exciting! My favorite character was probably Indrajit, he was seriously kicking ass. It was very...anime."

Book excerpt: This is a Sanskrit reader meant for those who have acquired basic grammatical skills and wish to start reading original Sanskrit texts. The Mula-ramayana, which is actually the first chapter of Valmiki's Ramayana and summarizes the whole epic, has been used as a text book in innumerable colleges and schools all over India. Therefore, this bilingual translation was prepared intending to fulfill the needs of a broad range of students. The grammatical analysis here presents the basic morphological classification of the vocabulary and some elements of the syntax. The word-for-word meaning was done with the help of three traditional Sanskrit commentaries: Govinda-raja's Ramayana-bhusana, Nagoji Bhatta's Ramayana-tilaka and Siva-sahaya's Ramayana-siromani. The prose order (anvaya) of the Sanskrit texts was done according to the way the verses were interpreted and translated. For didactic purposes, the English and Hindi translations are mostly literal

Book The Ramayana Of Valmiki Vol 4 Kiskindhakanda An Epic Of Ancient India

Download or read book The Ramayana Of Valmiki Vol 4 Kiskindhakanda An Epic Of Ancient India written by Rosalind Lefeber and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the fourth volume of a translation of India`s most beloved and influential epic tale-the Ramayana of Valmiki. As befits its position at the center of the work, Volume IV presents the hero Rama at the turning point of his fortunes. Having previously lost first his kingship and then his wife , he now forms an alliance with the monkey prince, Sugriva. Rama needs the monkeys to help him find his abducted wife, Sita, and indeed, by the end of this book, they have at least discovered where her abductor has taken her. But first Rama must agree to secure for his new ally the throne of the monkey kingdom by eliminating the reigning king, wh is none other than Sugriva`s detested elder brother, Valin. The tragic rivalry between the two monkey brothers is in sharp contrast to Rama`s affectionate relationship with his own brothers and forms a self-contained episode within the larger story of Rama`s adventures. This volume continues the translation of the critical edition of the Valmiki Ramayana, a version considerably reduced from the vulgate on which all previous translations were based. It is accompanied by extensive notes on the original Sanskrit text and on several untranslated early Sanskrit commentaries. Contents List of Abbreviations, Preface, Guide to Sanskrit Pronunciation, PART 1: Introduction, Prologue, Synopsis, The Critical Edition, The Commentaries, The Description of the Four Directions, Rama's Allies, The Death of Valin, The Translation and Annotation, PART II. Kiskindhakanda, PART III. Notes, Glossary of Important Sanskrit Words, Proper Nouns, and Epithets, Glossary of Flora and Fauna, Bibliography of Works Cited, Index.
