Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rainbow's End: Alaska And it was the second day: They Sped across the prairies, the level threshing floors Of the world's gran ary, swept clean of wheat now, with pools of water showing that Dame Nature had barely finished her Spring house-cleaning. Flowers peered out every where as they passed; the year was too young for hard work. The third day they passed through Bismarck, North Dakota, a town which has always had enough cranks to turn every freak machine extant. They crossed the muddy Missouri at the little town Of Mandan, named from the curious blue-eyed Indians who once lived about it, a powerful tribe. At Medora they caught Sight of the Marquis de Mores' castle, high perched upon a crag, and of the great packing houses builded with his American wife's rocks. The little town was named after her. At the mansion extravagant hospitality was once dispensed. House parties feasted, danced, hunted, marveling at the surrounding wilder ness and the luxury that had invaded it. But the mar quis has ended his adventurous life in far away Africa, the great buildings are abandoned, like the foolish scheme that demanded them, and serve only to bring to mind a man whose fine riding and personal bravery were his most conspicuous virtues. Book excerpt: ‘Rainbow's End’ by Rex Beach is a western, action-adventure novel set to the backdrop of the Spanish-American war that will be enjoyed by fans of ‘Rough Riders’ by Theodore Roosevelt or the film ‘Citizen Kane’. The story tells the tale of a time when young men in the West who were old enough to ride would head to East Texas to join Theodore Roosevelt’s Rough Riders, and assist with the invasion of Cuba. They would ride to glory and return as heroes, but there were very few who would return home to their families. Rex Beach, was an American novelist, playwright, and Olympic water polo player. His novels, most of which were adventure novels, were influenced by Jack London – author of ‘White Fang’ – and they were very popular during the early 1900s. His second novel, ‘The Spoilers’ which was based on a true experience he witnessed while in Alaska of corrupt government officials stealing gold mines from prospectors, became one of the best-selling novels of 1906.

Book excerpt: What is real wilderness? During a week-long visit to the Brooks River in Alaska's Katmai National Park, noted naturalist and master storyteller Paul Schullery strives to answer that question. His wise and aware description of misadventure along the dream-perfect waterway-where anglers, hikers, and photographers share the landscape with Alaskan brown bears-examines our deeply felt need to connect with something really wild, in Alaska and in the rest of America. At once funny and frightening, alarming and hopeful, Real Alaska demonstrates once again why Schullery has been called "America's foremost citizen of the national parks."
