But the mar quis has ended his adventurous life in far away Africa, the great buildings are abandoned, like the foolish scheme that demanded them, and serve only to bring to mind a man whose fine riding and personal bravery were his most conspicuous virtues. His second novel, ‘The Spoilers’ which was based on a true experience he witnessed while in Alaska of corrupt government officials stealing gold mines from prospectors, became one of the best-selling novels of 1906.
